  • I should of said I only buy new. I never use the marketplace. Too fishy. Rather buy legit new releases than used sets. I only buy used at retailers like fye and thats a rare occasion if i do.

  • @disneyfanjilly1 If you get them from a department store, they SHOULD be legit

  • This is why I only by anime from rightstuf/amazon

  • @majidekurizu That's good, now if you get them from the Amazon Marketplace (used or from individual users) you have to be careful. I've gotten bootlegs from there...two of the ones I showed were from the Amazon Marketplace

  • Just out of curiousity, I bought 2 dvd box sets for really cheap price ($6 each) today at a local used dvd, books, cd store. And I didnt realize they were bootleg until I looked it up, is it illegal that I bought them when I didn't know that they were bootlegs?

  • @Creepynazgul It is illegal to sell bootlegs. To own a bootleg is TECHNICALLY not illegal...like taping something onto a VHS or a DVD is creating a bootleg...and that's perfectly legal...it's the distribution of bootlegs that's illegal. I would bring it up to the store you bought it from, they have to make it right or they COULD be in A LOT of trouble if you chose to call the police

  • @agactinggirl Ok thanks for the info. Appreciate it.

  • I bought a Haibane Renmei FX bootleg and went a year without knowing it. I couldn't tell because the visual quality was so good. That is the only bootleg I've bought--I won't buy them anymore and now know how to tell them apart from official releases. I won't give up my Haibane set now that I have it (I love the show too much), but I definitely will buy Funimation's release of it when they finally put it out to replace the FX set.

  • HA I have a legit anime set that folds open AND has a clear slip cover! :P hahah sorry i'm just being the devil's advocate; I really appreciated this video and agree. :)

  • Gees people before writing these comments look it up. I can't speak for countries outside of the USA, but it is illegal to reproduce and sell any product. A bootleg is JUST THAT a reproduction of a product and then sold. The bootleg company never even pays royalties or anything like this. There's no reason to debate this topic and say "bootleg is okay".

  • @RiaraTan I am glad someone agrees with me...and the law...haha

  • does it really matter if it is a bootleg as long as its high quality and nicely packaged

  • @TheOtakuSaber18 bootlegs are illegal and do nothing to help an industry I love...there's nothing right with them

  • @agactinggirl I get what your saying. I've grown up in Asia but I'm born American lol. So, I don't mind bootlegs as long as they are good. The reason I want the real DVDs though are for collector reasons, I never really had originals before, support, and because I have the money at the time lol.

  • Bitch you ugly dam

  • Just throwing it out there: The Dragon Ball Z Season Sets open weird like that and those are legit.

  • @FourthPiece Like I said...there ARE some exceptions

  • I wish Sony would re release Blood+ part one. It's only been 2-3 years and it's already out of print.

  • hey cool video, I unforuntaly have two bootlegs, and yes one of them is a digi pack and the other is a home made DVD

  • Oh shit! A few years ago, my older sister bought a Fishigi Yugi boxset for my 13 year old sister. Back then, I wasn't aware of bootlegged anime. It opened just like your Now and then Here and there. I JUST went to my sisters room and opened one of the DVDs. It had the FX logo.

  • Actually usually bootlegs are region free

  • @mixerNack "Region Free" and "All Region" are the same thing

  • @agactinggirl Yeah, but you said they werent gunna work because they were japanese region.

  • @mixerNack Oh, you misunderstood. Legit dvds from Japan won't work. Japan is in a different region...so if it is a legit dvd it won't play

  • also how u can tell its fake is if it has chinese subtitles :)

  • eesh owo. theres tons of bootlegs D: ive never gotten a DVD except as gifts, so i gotta be careful ;-; i want the kuroshitsuji DVD. i also need to keep an eye out for nendoroid and figure bootlegs cause i tend to want those all the time. xD. one of y major fears now is getting a bootleg.

  • @PaulinaH727 Yeah it happens a lot, sadly. I try very hard to be cautious, I really didn't know at first until a friend of mine explained it to me. Since then I have been very picky about anything anime related that I buy

  • T_T I received my Marmalade Boy DVD set today. It's a bootleg... meh!

I'll try to contact the seller, but I have the feeling that he's perfectly fine with selling bootlegs and won't take my complaint seriously.

    Thanks for the video!

  • @Celestrall Where did you buy it out of? Amazon? Ebay? You can contact the third party seller (if there is one) and they are obligated to refund your money...that's what happened with my bootlegs. If there isn't a third party seller then I would turn the person's address into the police and let them handle it. It is illegal to sell a bootleg.

  • I posted my How to Spot a bootleg video, I made the mistake of buying the Trigun DVD bootleg. I made my video and then chucked it to the library.

  • @ReViewMeMedia Very cool that you made the video! My best friend bought that same bootleg...real bummer! At least FUNimation is rereleasing Trigun on DVD next month :-) if you don't have it yet, you can preorder that on Amazon!

  • @agactinggirl @ReViewMeMedia It got the big Geneon Trigun brick from RightStuf so I don't want to re-buy it again until my discs no longer work, I'm happy with my DVDs and now I know where to buy from.

  • i was on a web site called otakucastle and they had the a tenchi boxset that had: tenchi universe, tenchi in tokyo, the tenchi ova's. i do not know if the boxset is bootleg or real. the reason i ask is the site sells all region dvd's. but the problem is since tenchi muyo is a old anime what is the chance these are real.

  • @D4wWhiteGhost2 There is a chance that it's a bootleg. If you can't find it legitimately elsewhere, then assume it's a bootleg. I know there are Tenchi dvds...but I don't know about boxsets.

  • @0Tomes Awesome!! Haha

  • I got six bootleg anime >.< and five out of six of my bootleg anime work though they all have great quality and somewhat good sub I feel bad for not supporting the company and the creator but I do have some legit anime as well...I got a mix collection of legit and bootleg anime. Is it ok?

  • @wolfninja2007 I still own my bootlegs...I don't watch them. If you CAN get them legally, I would.

  • @sv2011kickster Yeah...it makes me sick to my stomach

  • Whooo! Thanks for all the knowledge! People who try to jip you SUCK!!!

  • i have one that has a slip cover it was inuyasha if i show it in a vid can you tell me what you think if it is or not? thx for the info

  • @devilangel11795 Yeah go for it!

  • great and informative video

  • @BDUBTheAnimeMaster :-) I am glad you found it informative!

  • Great video. :)

  • @tosluver :-) glad you like it!

  • @agactinggirl

yeah keep up the good work.

  • I applaud your dedication and effort.

  • @tetsubo57 Thanks! Just taking the knowledge I have learned from a friend and passing it on

  • cover that looked like what The Works was selling...

Also the disk looks nothing like the disk I got directly from company for another volume.. =/ ALso the disk and the rating is in black and white.. hang on as typing this it has a company name on it. It says 'Boulevard Entertainment ltd.' @.@ Know anything about them? I would use Google but home schooling starts in a minute >.<

  • @KirariFairy Eh I meant google more (already did a little bit and didn't read anything useful)

  • @KirariFairy I can't find them on any bootleg list. So I am not sure. Next time I have a chance to talk with Greg, I will ask him. He still knows way more than I do

  • This is really helpful, thank you!

I am sad because I got 4/5 seasons of Sailor Moon in bootleg form and they were not cheap ;-; Oh well I was only 11.. didn't know better. Every time I am unsure from now on I will use this for reference ^^

I am having a hard time figuring out if my Chobits volume 1 is a bootleg =/

A place here in 'ol England called the works did some Anime DVD's for 99p value packs (99p is just under $2?) and I got one off ebay with the proper cover but under was a different

  • nice video, i love it but at 3:21 my naruto dvd box set opens like that and it's real boxset.

  • @FullmetalSnake4501 Like I said there are exceptions. Since most like live action main stream shows open like that...the more main stream anime seasons will open like that. So far Naruto and Inuyasha are the only exceptions. If it opens like that and it doesn't fit under any other categories, then yeah it's fine :-)

  • I definitely understand what you mean and now I feel guilty about the sailor moon bootlegs I have. In my defense I bought them when I was ignorant to the whole anime industry situation (although its no excuse). Should I just get rid of them??

  • @ForneverWorld Don't feel bad. I had NTHT for over a YEAR before I realized it was a bootleg. It happens. Greg taught me everything I know haha -- I wouldn't say you have to get rid of them. I still have mine. Just be sure to buy them legitimately when/if they are rereleased by FUNimation

  • @agactinggirl Oh absolutely, I'm just waiting for Funimation to release sailor moon so I can pick up the DVD's. Thanks for the bootleg scouting tips. : )

  • yep i just checked! my NTHT dvds are ALL region :)

    very helpful videooo :3

  • @kamikazestrwbry Ok, so then that is the case :-) Thanks!
