Nippon kempo looks like the older forms of Kyokushin Kai Karate Do , when Oyama and a few other Senseis ( whom are Okinawan ) made the use of Bogu or Body Armour for Sparring.
Oyama O Sensei reason was to protect the other party from getting seriously hurt , as Oyama strikes the head body and legs , many of the earlier Old Karate schools were not in favour with his format of combat calling it KENKA KEN or Street Fighting Fist Style in Japan.
There are different styles of Kempo and yes, it is old Karate. Its Kung fu mixed with Karate and jujutsu. It was made a long time ago and hasent changed much. The masters of Kempo dont want it to be a big international sport and stuff like that so we try to not get very famous. Its very traditional, we dont even have names for some of our moves. We just say like, the one with the punch and neck chop or something lol Look it up, its a interesting history!
