  • wonder who disliked this! maybe you should have put some swear words into the title!

  • great stuff! no charvas, hoodies or asbo brigade, notice the two young blokes on the dodgems - in suits! classic age, pity itll never be again

  • brilliant seening The jets and ark owned by the crows and hoadleys dodgems

i worked at the city in the 70's for fairworld and micheal haughton, flying coaster to meteorite to the twist, two of the lads i worked with are now my brother in laws

great times great grounding in life.....

  • Great film clip. I live in Whitley bay and was born that year. Used to go to Spanish city all the time as a kid

  • Fantastic - thanks for posting!

  • Great days - no bloody foreigners in sight!

  • @whiters2009 We were there in 1967 too! Scots 'foreigners'. haaaa!

  • Great stuff - I was working there in '67 on Alan Knells bingo stall. Only 6d for one card, or 9d for a double. You can just see the stall near the end of the film, behind the "Grand National" jumping horse ride.

  • A quite superb film.

Will hopefully be in Whitley Bay next year, to pay my respects.

  • We used to spend every summer holiday with relatives in Northumberland, and a trip to the Spanish City, followed by a fish & chip dinner, was the absolute highlight for me. As soon as that white dome came into view, I was in another world. Sad to see what's happened to it now, but I expect that's the fate of a lot of British holiday resorts. It's probably cheaper to fly to sunny Mallorca than to drive a couple of hundred miles to a possibly went and windy British resort.

  • Grew up in Whitley Bay in the 70s & 80s. It's such a shame to see it now....

  • I've still got my picture of me and a monkey on my shoulder around late 1979 and i still remember when the cork screw roller coaster arrived (i think it was around the time Wham had all the t-shirts out or it could have been Frankie goes to hollywood) good times!!!

  • Another North Eastern icon that is no longer with us. I blame people going abroad for the hot weather LOL. Used to love the dodgems.

  • bk in day was great now life is shit everywhere is the concil init got a clue

  • my mate shaun used to tell me about it all the time

  • But WHY is it horrible now? Explain please.

  • Fantastic - just as I remember it as a child. I particularly loved the carousel.

  • Weekend bus trip from the red city of the north, memories, so many memories, just the memories left.

  • Great Stuff - very nostalgic brought back lots of happy memories - shame Whitley Bay has gone downhill a bit - still worth a visit though in my opinion and Roll On the regeneration plan

  • oi shut up u shit head or ill kick ya teeth out

  • Damn, this made me happy and sad in equal measure, I love Whitley Bay, it's my spiritual home lol, such a shame what's happened to it

  • I've just been reliably informed why Mark knophler sang about the 'Spanish City' but a good gerodie frind of mine.......ther you are

  • Tunnel of love by Dire Straits.Refrences to "Cullercoats to Whitley Bay"aswell

  • lived here for 17 years it is now SHIT NOWT TO DO

  • Yay! I live there!

  • I met my wife in the Spanish City in 1954 - We are still happily married and living in Las Vegas. Seems like only yesterday!

  • @H0Varlet congratz.... years go too fast. its went really down hill now. no one goes anymore, only to the odd amusements or local chippies. real shame.

  • @leerud69

Amazing...over two years ago I posted my comment on that old clip of the Spanish City at Whitley Bay, and like a message in a bottle, up comes a response.

Thank anyway for your congratz, we are still happy, travel a lot, and enjoying life, I hope you are well too...whoever you are .:-)

  • great stuff...what's the music? its on the tip of my tongue!!

  • The Spanish City .. I remember it well and the houses in the background .. Elmwood grove ..I grew up there. My grandparents and parents owned some of the rides and stalls .. Good memories ..
