You see, they had only 2 lives left, and in the ending you see knuckles on the wing of the tornado. But only one of the can fit on the plane, so the other 2 have to die. 1 life is taken away for each of them, causing the last one to be out of lives. And thus, the game over screen.

That's because the island starts flying when the emerald is removed. Since the hidden palace is on the island, keeping the emerald there will keep it from flying up. It makes sense.

After thinking about it, I think I have a theory on how the alternate "Game Over" screen came about. nineko only had 2 lives when playing, and since the 2 clones fell, the 2 lives were lost due to them falling, when normally you wouldn't lose anything from having the player-controlled character fall normally.

It's a strange idea, but I think it works O.o

well, the reason there are 3 blue knuckles is because there is multiple sprites for the character in the ram(memory) so with the code, it pulls out multiple sprites from the ram and has a blue pallete effect.
