Great vid. I own that knife. I was told by Mike that the loop is for an Army Light my Fire firesteel. That is in my sheath and it fits perfectly. God bless. John
I like your vids. But i was wondering if you could point me in the direction of some good quality bush knives( scandi ground) that are not super expencive and not plastic handled.
@smknsmpt88 Not all of the Mora knives have plastic handles. Check out their offerings online. Otherwise, unfortunately none of the other major manufacturers have caught on to the trend yet. If you want a super high quality knife with the Scandi grind, you're probably going to have to look into a custom or semi-custom.
If you're looking for a bushcraft knife in the same tradition as the Woodlore knife (used by Ray Mears), recommend looking at the Mora line. They're relatively inexpensive but very capable.
To keep your hands from slipping when wet. the knife had a lanyard hole in the knife handle. Put a short cord in the handle, just long enough to go to pinky and that will keep it from moving. When I got my knife from ML knifes that is how he had the knife rigged. works great and keeps my hand away from the blade.
Hi, got the knife back. Thx. While the small loop on top of the belt loop is for a d-ring or neck lanyard, the loop on the side fits an army model firesteel (looks like you had a the smaller scout version there). Sorry if I wasn't clear in my message. Thanks for doing the review and good luck with your channel. ML
pigglesnitch i was going to say the same, i have a firesteel loop on mine that takes the thicker of the three grades i own, im sure the are graded Scout, Army and Survival or similar, although using the loop as a means to secure it is fine too, just adds to it versatility
After a fire steel has been used for awhile, you guys do realize that the diameter does change and that the fire steel will no longer fit the loop on the sheath properly, right?

And, honestly, for something as important as your method of making fire, I never trust a leather loop that depends upon friction. I don't care how well the loop fits the rod. I tend to keep my firesteel in my pants pocket, so there is no chance I will be without it.

Knives have been made with smooth handles for about as long as they have been putting handles on knives. If its a problem for you maybe your not someone who should be reviewing bushcraft knives. One important aspect of bushcraft is learning how to use a knife safely. If you plan to use a knife for stabbing and thrusting you probably need something other then a bushcraft knife. I don't own one of these knives but have others like it and its a safe design if used as intended.
I like what I like - and that's what I base my reviews upon. My opinions are always evolving, however, and comments like yours will continue to educate me. I appreciate your input, and perhaps I will update my review down the road.

The pic of the knife in the sheath on the BCNW website shows the fire steel in that slot. My fire steel can beat up your fire steel. (it's bigger and could be retained in that slot.)
Not gonna lie, I'm in love with convex edges. I've used the sandpaper and mousepad method on pretty much every knife I own. I have maybe one or two knifes out of a collection about forty that I haven't convexed.
Nice discussion. I could use this knife all day long! Thanks for sharing.

The bigger light my fire Army fire striker would probably a good fit for the loop on the side! Worth a thought!
practicalbeing 9 months ago
the loop on the side is for a FIRESTEEL ... one of the proper length and diameter.
A peice of shock cord attached to the firesteel gets looped down over the end to retain it while stowed in the loop.

the loop on the side is actually for a swedish firesteel. you have the scout model it's for the army model.

If you get a full size firesteel it'll probably fit just perfectly. Look for the army model rather than the scout model.

actually the side loop IS for bigger firesteel...they come in larger sizes

I have found with my copy of this knife that the wetter it gets the more the handle sticks to your hand and not the reverse.

Be well.

Icychap, Firesteels are available in several sizes, your is a small one, the loop has has been made to accommodate a 10mm firesteel.
Your appears to be around 6mm
pigglesnitch 2 years ago
I never realized that. I have only ever seen the smaller size. Thanks for letting me know!

I'll take the knife off your hands if you don't want it. ;) I need a "bushcraft" knife.

Nice job Ice!! I'm with you on the handle issue. I also agree on the sheath situation as well. Kydex would be better.

Thanks, bro. I'm still a fan of synthetic sheaths (as you'll see in my next vid), but as far as leather productions sheaths this one is quite nice.
Thanks for watching!

I would really like this knife if the handle was a bit less wide. I currently use a Bark River Aurora for bushcraft, and I think it's perfect.
