I've actually read a few studies about it. And yes, prolonged exposure to high amounts of GM food can have some side effects. But think for a second. Nobody should have 30% of the diet made up by one plant. Also think of the positives: Higher yields and greater resistance to pest/disease. We've been searching for that since the first person planted a seed. Do you realize how beneficial it is? How many products can you name which come from planets? They can all benefit from GMOs.

I'm not against organic food... I've been growing organic food since I was a little kid. I accept GMO's because I have no real reason not to. I don't believe that there is some horrible evil plot to poison us all with transgenic plants. There are places in the USA, where the voters can gather signatures on a petition to introduce legislation on the ballot & the voters can then pass any law that they wish. This law is referred to as REFERENDUM & appears to be the answer to making govt. obey the masses & ignore the corporations. Most communities have farmers markets where the consumer can buy directly from the grower. You have to buy what is in season of course but things are more likely organic and harvested when ripe seeing how it won't be traveling half way around the country or the world there is less concern of spoilage. These farmers markets are part of what is being targeted by this bill. They are truly self regulating and as far as I know there hasn't been any problems.

You do realize that most of the contamination of the food supply is coming from the large commercial farms, not the family farms? Family farms are what built this country. Don't lose sight of that. More technology isn't always the best solution to problems. Sometimes leaving biological processes to nature is best. That's what Organic farming is all about.

Maybe so on a commercial scale, to push more production out of the soil, but I dont think pumping Anhydrous Ammonia directly into the soil is good for it. Also, Potash is actually a naturally occuring mineral and is also produced any time that you burn wood. Crop rotation is still alive and well. I do agree with your last sentence.
@segarza it's a very effective form of introducing what plants need into the ground nitrogen. the biggest danger is not to the ecology but to thee operator. potash is considered man made as it is a chemical. the only natural ferilizer is dung, crap , excrement, feces. guano was highly valued to the point that congress passed the guano act. putting more nitrogen in the soil can do only good. the worst thing is desalinated water as for soil conatmonatino(excluding obvious biohazards & toxin.)

If a pharma/bio-tech firm owns the patent on say the genetic sequence that is required to "cure" any given disease that they would rather treat then cure. Guess what. No one else can use the genetic sequence with out licensing it from said bio tech firm. If they refuse to license it then it can't be used. So no cure.

I've actually read a few studies about it. And yes, prolonged exposure to high amounts of GM food can have some side effects. But think for a second. Nobody should have 30% of the diet made up by one plant. Also think of the positives: Higher yields and greater resistance to pest/disease. We've been searching for that since the first person planted a seed. Do you realize how beneficial it is? How many products can you name which come from planets? They can all benefit from GMOs.

I'm not against organic food... I've been growing organic food since I was a little kid. I accept GMO's because I have no real reason not to. I don't believe that there is some horrible evil plot to poison us all with transgenic plants. At the worst, Monsanto would be a corporation that is after money, and at the best, GMO's could drastically the quality of the human diet around the world.

Seed saver's being tracked down, threatened and sued for saving seed from GMO contaminated crops. Have you heard about the corn situation in Mexico? That's just plain wrong and how will it stop? The wind will always blow. I want the freedom to choose.

It's not talked about much, but it was actually the Estate Tax, originally implemented in 1917, i believe, to help pay for World War 1, which began to bankrupt family farms in the 1950's and 60's, and into the 1970's, as families were pushed into higher tax brackets due to inflation. Thus, Family Farms were taxed out of business. Irwin Schiff did a great video in the 1980's about this before they put him in prison

Most communities have farmers markets where the consumer can buy directly from the grower. You have to buy what is in season of course but things are more likely organic and harvested when ripe seeing how it won't be traveling half way around the country or the world there is less concern of spoilage. These farmers markets are part of what is being targeted by this bill. They are truly self regulating and as far as I know there hasn't been any problems.

You do realize that most of the contamination of the food supply is coming from the large commercial farms, not the family farms? Family farms are what built this country. Don't lose sight of that. More technology isn't always the best solution to problems. Sometimes leaving biological processes to nature is best. That's what Organic farming is all about.

@segarza all the research in the world does not stop things from happening, that's why they are called unexpected results. gmo's again are not new gregor mendel was doing this in the 14th century . all foods are gmo of some type . read the history of corn not to long ago it did not look anything like what we eat now & I don't mean monsanto type corporations making this change either. start your own farm and produce what you percieve to be heritage farming it's all good.

@segarza people do bad stuff for even less money. montsanto is not even called that anymore. everyone should have their own garden. one of the reasons power elites don't want you to grow your own food is then you will not have to succumb to their will. in other words you will not have to be a debt slave. gmo etc is a red herring , the real issue is control.

@circusboy90210 Yes, finally we agree on something! haha I want the freedom to grow my own food. I want the freedom to use and save seed that will reproduce itself year after year. My entire garden is and always will be planted with crop varieties that allow me to save the seeds for the future. Every year, my garden plot produces more food than my family and I can eat. All natural fertilizer and compost, no chemicals used.

@segarza sweetheart we have agreed the whole time, you just are still a little ill informed as to some details of historical perspective that are important. there is a reason why mankind stopped using alll natural fertilizers it works for tihs. artificial stuff like potash works wonders, crop rotation is a semi forgotten technology that works as well. third world nations need to get educated. religious extremism plays a big part in poverty & starvation worldwide, not lack of food or farms.

@circusboy90210 Well, I don't claim to know everything about anything, but how can you say that mankind stopped using all natural fertilizers? Maybe so on a commercial scale, to push more production out of the soil, but I dont think pumping Anhydrous Ammonia directly into the soil is good for it. Also, Potash is actually a naturally occuring mineral and is also produced any time that you burn wood. Crop rotation is still alive and well. I do agree with your last sentence.

@segarza it's a very effective form of introducing what plants need into the ground nitrogen. the biggest danger is not to the ecology but to thee operator. potash is considered man made as it is a chemical. the only natural ferilizer is dung, crap , excrement, feces. guano was highly valued to the point that congress passed the guano act. putting more nitrogen in the soil can do only good. the worst thing is desalinated water as for soil conatmonatino(excluding obvious biohazards & toxin.)

@segarza all living things @ that level are chemical based by providing an overabundance you help them lourish which is why chemical fertilizers are better they are pure and have no (hahahaha) bullshit involved . algae or example assemble chemically (do not want to get technical about dna rna and cellular functions. sure you would understand) basically they take raw minerals to live not like us who need organic energy. (all food is organic)

your right they don't know what they are doing compared to farmers killing thousands of people with contaminated foods where there is no FDA. they only went to college and got a degree for it. im sure you know how to grow corn but they know the incubation periods for certain bacteria under certain conditions, and the incorrect chemical makeup of pesticides and such. but i guess since you have been growing corn for 5 years you would know more about that. your a self absorbed hippe.

Obama could do more to improve health care by pushing for legislation that would ban this practice of patenting genetic and biological material than what he is pushing currently. If a pharma/bio-tech firm owns the patent on say the genetic sequence that is required to "cure" any given disease that they would rather treat then cure. Guess what. No one else can use the genetic sequence with out licensing it from said bio tech firm. If they refuse to license it then it can't be used. So no cure.

How can the act of planting food for yourself be made into something the government can regulate? farming has been around for as long as we've had the knowledge and the fact that our government thinks it has the right to tell me if/when/how I feed myself and my family downright enrages me. The research being done on adding nanoparticles to our food is a big sleeper.
The Rockefeller Foundation feels it important to make sure good PR goes out and not suffer the same bad PR as Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO), which are unlabeled in the United States.
Many people do not realize the potential to have programmable organisms inside your body much less the effect of having those substances in your body.
Do we really want the large food corps sneaking nanoparticles into our food?
