This is a heavier sounding song back when, in fat most of Fabian's songs would be classed as heavy metal had they of had that category of music back in the Doowop era. I have a few favorites by this legend & this hit posted here isn't amoungst them but I do feel free to comment nevertheless. My favorites are Turn Me Loose, Hound Dog Man, Tongue Tied & Friendly World. I do tune them in from time to time but not often but then I never tune this number in...same goes for "Mighty Cold". Thx
Just kidding. There is a major difference, after all, between studio-enhancement of vocals and an entirely different person singing them. Things turned out okay for Fabian, though, regardless of the scandal. He acted in some movies and never ended up broke or a junkie.
Oh! This one was a great hit in Germany for TED HEROLD I think in 1959 as well, so apparently the German version was released shortly after the English original. But I think without the Internet and all that, I would never have found out who sang the original! AFAIR it was only known to real connoisseurs.
Contains the great line: "I may be young and I still go to school, but when it comes to chicks I'm no 'poor little fool'. ('Poor LIttle Fool' was Ricky Nelson's song.) Great photos, nice editing job.
This was Fabian's debut single?I always thought that 'Trun me loose' was.How about that?I guess the old saying IS true: 'You learn something new every day'.Still, great song,& thanks for that info!
fabian's only crime seems to be his good looks- who cares - the records are great. vince taylor couldn't sing but his stage act was dynamic and people enjoyed it. why slag off performers who give us pleasure when there are politicians still living and breathing ?
@johnnystark100 fabian is an arrogant jerk, even today. he still doesn't realize that without his fans, he doesn't exist. he never had talent, and still doesn't. and he has a horrible personality.
@veefriends Some time back in the 80s he tried to make a come-back. What happened was an arrest for spousal abuse and the publicity around it stopped that real fast.
I met Fabian lastnight he performed for a law enforcement benefit along with bobby vee, they are both still rockin and rollin...it was an awesome concert and it was for a great cause! THANK YOU FABIAN N BOBBY VEE!!!
My older sis had a big crush on Fabe. I thought it was around 1957 or so tho. Then the 45s came in smaller cardboard sleeves-very scarce now. He was a nice guy I think, but couldn't hold a tune in a coal bucket!
I give his whole career as a D-Minus. Phony fabricated Teen Rock and Roll that was did not compare to real rockers like Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Gene Vincent. ugh
Come on now, there were excellent singers that were also a lot 'poppier' than elvis, little richard and gene vincent et al back then... Bobby Vee, Ricky Nelson, Dion, Bobby Rydell etc. I agree with you that Fabian was a total phony however
true- but I personally wouldnt add Dion in that group, I think Dion was his own guy, and he helped the doo- wop sound. And Rick Nelson proved himself as a legitimate artist with James Burton on guitar, and he cut some great rockabilly stuff, as well as good songs in later years, as he shed his teen idol image.
Thanks - I hadn't heard of HMV. Yes, all early U.S. Fabian records were Chancellor - out of, I believe, Philadelphia. "String Along" was backed by "About This Thing Called Love," also on Chancellor, but darker label. (Was that the flip in the UK as well?) What I still like about "I'm a Man" is the instrumentation. It's as good as anything on any Presley record. Most of the Avalon recordings were also well-made. However studio-enhanced, "I'm a Man" holds up quite strongly after 50 years.
He's a man but Dean Martin still didn't let him date his daughter lololol.

His first, and probably his best. He always had great production, but was severely limited by his vocal range

I hear that Fabian was one of the most handsome guy of the RnR era. As I can see, maybe he was a good looking but no one was better than Elvis!

Thanks for all the pics of Fabe while the song was playing. Probably the best looking of all the teen idols.

It was the same flip side over here as well,I was never a Rock N Roll fan but certain records catch the ear and this is one of them.

"HMV" label? My Mom had Chancellor 45 lying around (pink label) with "Hypnotized" on the back. Also "String Along" on another Chancellor.
archpoppy 3 years ago
It was released on HMV in the UK as was String Along was it released in the US on Chancellor?
