Franz Mazura's Gunther was great, he is such a great singer and actor. Loved him in "Moses and Aron", saw him then in the 80s in Vienna several times ...
James Levine with the Metropolitan Opera, to be specific. That would be a more traditional production, and also a good performance albeit slower and less crystal clear.
I thought the Levine Ring was more traditional but the cast for Boulez was far more superior. I find the direction for Levine's Ring was a little shoddy. Behrens was a weak Brunnhilde, and though Jones is always a bit off in her some of her notes, she has a bigger voice. I find the chemistry between Behrens and Morris a little flat, except for the end of Die Walkure maybe. I wish Christa Ludwig could have been on this one and of course can anyone ever get a good Donner?
Levine's late 80's ring had a number odf strengths and two glaring weaknessess:
Behrens and Jeruselem.
She was obvioulsy in over her head and he just never really had the top notes for Siegfried.
His work in Parsifal int he same period was much better, and I think he would have made an excellent Siegmund. He was very convincing as Loge, usually sung by a character tenor.
could you tell me who the singers are in this? It's certainly very impressive and looks well cast and acted, but can you recommend a good "traditionally" staged ring on DVD to me? I've got the Krauss, Solti, Bohm, Karajan, Barenboim cycles on CD and am sighting up the Keilberth at the moment but it's out of my price range at the moment.

I rly agree that the Chéreau Ring is one of the best performed rings ever but Matti Salminen as Hagen is much better than Hübner.
Hübner is a very good baritone but not a good hagen....

I agree completely. But for someone who wants a traditional stage interpretation, Levine is fine.

Yes, Behrens is terrible. Jones is a great Brünnhilde. Not only a great voice, she's slim and looks like a Goddess.
I like the Chéreau Ring but for Götter, I prefer Levine's - Hübner is a good singer but Salminen IS Hagen.
