@hawkrider88 I would advise you trying to get a tumbadora but for the mean time just use your quinto as main high drum and tune your conga down to a tumbadora! Good luck
hey net i am from Malaysia..been learning and watching your video since last year...good tips and easy to learn and what i do keep on practice...now i been playing in the local club with band.....any way just to tell you...appreciate what you doing my friend...and one think, about a tuning..cant you put a lesson to tune a conga, tumbao and quinto
One thing i want to learn are paradidles on congas are pretty hard to learn do you know a good way to learn how to hit them, thanks Nate, keep on playing bro
hey bro how about bomba patterns, sica, yuba, holandes, im sure like me there are others that are interested on those rithms.. you got to live them although, they are not played on congas, instead barriles but can be played on congas too....
You are really an excellent teacher. I can't believe how much I am learning from your videos . And for free. Keep it up dude. There are many lessons here on you tube but you are the BOMB.......You go boy
yo man all the help has got me sounds very good in just weeks but this was the only video you did not really break down step by step. I have the basic part down and can go back and forth from tumbao and it sound good. but you doing any more videos or whats up. can you recommend some? i also want to know if reggaeton and the congas go well and with what beat. I only have two drums fyi lol
thats good to hear!....and as soon as I get a better camera, or borrow my sisters I will do some, lol...and as far as reggaeton, typically a merengue style beat on congas works well but can be adapted depending on the specific song
u know right now that im tunning them by ear they really don't sound bad at all so I they must be close. Thanks for your input bro. Quick question where r u playing? R u in a circuit in NY or do u bounce? Coming to Cali soon? Great lessons bro. Gracis!
Thas was up man...My bad im late on this, i think I never got it...but actually im in VA and not really playing actively unfortunately, but if I find something hopefully I will soon! lol...maybe a trip to cali sometime in the future, who knows lol
Man you should be playing somewhere! Man I can play the basic tumbao solidly on 2 drums and I could play for my church and a friend from a huge church wants me to sit in for him when he's away. Playing in a church will give the experience of playing with others. For my own church I'll play for free because I love them and I want to use my ability to enhance the experience. I live in DC. Are you in Northern VA?
sup hommie. kewl rifs. what I really need to know is how to tune the three drums. The conga, the tumba and the super tumba. Right now it bone by ear and they soun ok but I know it may be off a little. Can you help. Big Jiggy G in Whittier
Honestly, you would just have to listen to different salsa songs and music in general to get a feel for what it should sound like and then just do your best to match it...it may take time but eventually you will get it right
I love your videos and I am getting much better since I have been watching you play. If I can kindly request, can you show us how to count and play with 3/2 or 2/3 clave. I don't know which hit on congas go with which beat on clave. IF you can break it down on slow motion with the 8 count on drums be wonderful.
Honestly, the whole clave thing is not as important as you might think...as long as you know how the clave should sound then you are ok, but its something that takes a lot of "hands on" kind of learning, kind of hard to put in a video unfortunately...but keep it up and youll get it!
Awesome video instruction series! Your passion and instruction are a gift. I myself am just a beginner and I'm an unknown distance from applying this particular lesson. I do know sound from singing and so I do want to humbly advise a closer mic setup to improve sound quality. In your faster runs there is a slight delay with the sound of the strikes which makes it mentally harder for students to match your strikes with the sounds that are produced. Peace and blessings brother!
I live in the netherlands and I'm playing as a autodidakt ( i don't know if this is a good english word ) what i mean is that i've listened to a lot of music and learned myself playing just by listening to it. But I'm not playng with the right technic. But it's coming to an end now..... I'm trying your technic and in 2 weeks time it's working for me. I'm practicing with an metronome and it's working out great. looking out for some new lessons. Peace Frank
ur videos are great. I luv playin the congas, i'm trying to teach myself how to play. I don't have my own, i play em at church, it's not the best pero yo saco un ritmito no te crea, lol when i get some congas best believe i'll be watchin your videos to improve my skills. Thanx so much for postin'. God bless :)
Hey Nate..waiting on your next video! Don't forget to add bongos too..i just got my armando peraza ones! I'll post a video soon so you can see how much i've learned by watching you. In fact I was just playing on Jose pagan's (not sure if you heard of him) congas during the NY salsa congress and he said that i've got conga hands! funny thing is that i've never taken a live lesson :)
nate man!! you're awesome. You're the only 1 i can follow as I've told you before. i'm trying to learn so i can go to orchard beach here in the bx and play some congas. I just ordered bongos btw and i saw that you can play that too. Any chances you might post some bongo lessons as well? Take care bro and keep it up...u have no idea how much help and inspiration you are for us beginners!!
Thanks a lot bro...Thats great man, I wish I could go and play wit some of those people in NY! and I have been meaning to get to the bongos, but I just havent had too much time to do it unfortunately, hopefully I will soon enough tho bro...take care
Im learning how to play on my own on the congas threw youtube. Thanks for the lessons.Any advice you have for me holla.dont have any clips of my own yet.lol but soon.
lol, your welcome...and as soon as you are able to get some clips let me know and I'll give u some constructive criticism (as long as ur not better then me!) lol...take care
these are great vids... I am going to learn alot from these. what is the notation for this song dear friend???
How long have you been playing??? How many rhythms do you actually know??? I find it soo tedious trying to learn all these rhythms. I am finally starting to realize how it imporant it is. Thanks and keep it up. You have great teaching vids for guys like me. Cheers.
Thanks a lot. This is actually just a rhythm you can use in almost any song, and I have been playing for almost 10 years now. I know A LOT of rhythms, lol, maybe around 20? Just a guess, lol, but keep it up and hope to hear more from you in the future!
Thanks for the response Nate.
Blessings.

Hey Bro, really enjoying your videos and they have been very helpful.
I only have a Quinto and Conga (Matadors) which should I play as my main drum? Does it depend if I'm playing latin or pop/jazz?
Thanks much.

Hi Nate
Man you are really kewl.......I am learning from you and am totally grateful. I have two request if I may.
1. can you show me(us) how you hold the conga in your legs and raise it?
2. Would it be possible for you to say the hits or possibly show a card in front with the hits like for example HFSOHFS. This would really be great.
I saw someone else on the net do this but your videos are truly much better
A+
Peace Drum on
