Aretha smoked for many years and use to drink alot and it took a toll on her voice but trust me her voice was very clear and powerful back in the day. Go listen to her sing "Good To Me As I Am To You" just one of many expamples. You have a right to your opinion i just respectfully disagree. Aretha's voice is very soulful naturally.
