Consider a baby trapped in a burning home. Two bystanders both rush to its rescue, but one first negotiates a payment with the (wheelchair bound) parent outside. One gets rewarded in cash, the other in psychological gains. Declaring that this shows altruism is impossible renders the word meaningless. If it never applies, even such cases, then it's lost all power to distinguish. But having our language distinguish motivations for such cases is quite useful.
this goes to my favorites

Is altruism possible?
