Definitely not bad! I liked the star box, very colorful.
One thing I try really hard to stay away from are camera movements that match the object that its following, I like to hand animate the camera target point to give it a more realistic viewpoint.
I definately know your frustration, hand-animating a single ship smoothly is mind-numbing!
For a large number of ships, I have been getting promising results from Crowd Control.
