This is such an amazing video! It's really nice to see tribute being paid to John Lennon. I wasn't around when he died, I'm only 18 now, but I do love the Beatles and John. The influence there is so great and they are so inspiring. He was one of those few people who are like Gods. He was just truly amazing. I have been to NYC and I've seen Strawberry Fields and the front of his house. It didn't mean as much to me then as it would now but it still was awesome. Anyway, great vid!
I was watching that Monday Night Football game, New England Patriots versus the Miami Dolphins, when Howard Cosell announced John Lennon's death.
I was, and still am, a big Beatles fan. I actually think George Harrison will prove to have a bigger imprint than Lennon. In any case, both of their deaths have left an aching void.
Interesting comment about George vs. Lennon. Perhaps it's too soon to tell. Also, Paul has left quite an imprint on the world too, as he's still making extremely credible music these days. I couldn't imagine actually hearing that news on Monday Night Football.
I was 6 byears old when he died. I rememebr how much of an impact he had. It wasn't until later and experiencing more of life did I learn to appreciate his music a lot more.
I was 20 years old when John was killed. I remember it like yesterday. My almost favorite song of all time is 'Mind Games' then 'Imagine' and although I really did not know much about Yoko, I do know that had she not been in his life I would have a different top 10 favorite list of songs! When I moved to West Palm Beach later on one of the first things I wanted to see was where John and Yoko lived part time in Palm Beach. It is a beautiful manison they bought in 1980ish just before John died.
Okay, this is awkward. I just featured someone's homemade vid for "Happy X-Mas (War is Over)" on my page, only to find you in my recommendations. Again. So in the interest of peace, love, and the Holiday season, let's just "give peace a chance" for the sake of "instant karma" before these "mind games" destroy everyone's purpose here. In other words, will you accept my apologies for taking my issues out on you? --Joanna
what a touching video - and a very good commentary on a real and positive way that celebrities can touch their fans.
Also you reminded me of thoughts about how interconnected the world is - it's easy to see links between people like John Lennon and Bono, but it's also true for all of us. When things are dark I find it a comfort to remember that we truly do make a difference in this way - all of us. (And it makes it easier to choose to leave a positive mark.)
It really is an amazing thing when you see the positive (and unfortunately the negative) affect we can all have on each other on a daily basis. Seeing things like YT and Twitter and staying connected with new friends is an amazing thing, and frankly, I don't think we've seen the tip of the iceberg as to the potential power this has to make the world a better place.
The Beatles and John Lennon were everything to me as a kid. Having grown up in the 60's and 70's, Johns death was a tragedy. It's amazing to see you pay homage to him. I'm touched by it. Thank you!
The Beatles weren't as important to my parents, but my mom was big on Elvis (I watched her cry as his death was announced over her car radio).
Good points about Yoko - say what you will about her (and I often have), but she does help keep his memory alive.
Okay, yes it was kinda long but it wasn't at all random. By the time you were at the 12:15 mark, I had stopped having any concept of how long the video was.
You know what's really odd? I can remember the exact day and moment we found out that Elvis died too. I was 5 years old and at my grandma's house. I think Elvis's death was a bigger deal to my family as well.
I had a feeling you would be making a video on this topic! War Is Over seems constantly to be on the music channels right now, they ought to re-release it:)
Another beautiful and moving video, Gary. I remember your video about this last year, when I shared my story about going to Chicago's Cricket Hill to mourn John the weekend following his murder. That led to my attendance at a gun control rally, followed by marching on Washington for gay rights, fighting the KKK in Philadelphia, and countless war protests. John's musical talent will always astound me, but his activism truly did change my life.
I was too young to understand the impact at the time or what was happening around the world because of his death. I would have loved to have been at something like Cricket Hill.
wow...that park is amazing!!! I really wish sometimes that I lived somewhere that you could see/feel nature's changes. I cannot even believe it has been that long since John Lennon's death. I was on my schoolbus when I heard. I grew up on that music and on John's philosophy and it was devastating. What a visionary. We could surely use him around today. I love your analogy of U2 to Lennon...it's so wonderful...that ripple effect of caring so deeply for humanity. I appreciated your vlog.
Thank you very much! We definitely feel the seasons here, that's for sure. From having a ton of snow the past few weeks to sub zero temps already...we're experiencing winter in all it's glory. I need to do more park vlogs.
The Beatles were HUGE in my family. They were the first albums we owns and played over and over again from age 4 to 10 when we wore them out and they wouldn't play anymore. I was 14 when he was killed and I cried that entire day. And I know I have said this before, but finally standing outside the Dakotah in person in 1997 was surreal.
And WHEN you get to do the same thing, and walk through Strawberry Fields, I want to see every second of it on video (if I am not right there with you.) But you can't make the video... it's one of those things you just need to experience and let someone else hold the camera. :)
I actually edited a few minutes out of this too. I don't make nearly the vids that I once did, so if I go a little long, I don't get too worried about it. Thanks for watching all the way through! :)
Great video Gary. I just love the way you articulate your thoughts in your vlogs. I think there are many artists today like Bono who may not have been inspired to use their fame for good if it weren't for John Lennon. I believe the world was a better place for having had Lennon in it. Its unfortunate that we couldn't have had him for a longer time. Bono thankfully has picked up the torch. Even tho his physical self is gone his spirit of what he wanted for the world can live on. :)
Understand how you're thinking and feeling, Gary. There is a fascinating story that John had a premonition dream of his death in which he was killed by an poor imitation of himself. If quantuum theories of alternate dimensions hold true somewhere out there Johns still sings and the beat goes on.
Good to hear your thoughts, I did not see your video about this topic from last year. The Rock and Roll hall of fame description of the exhibit was great, thanks for sharing about it.
The park looks beautiful with all that snow!
Your glasses steaming up reminded me of Letterman when he was on Oprah! :-)
I just got Max a CD, 'Beatles for kids' and it has some really great songs on, hope he loves it when he finds it in his stocking. It's strange how events like this (the death of someone important to others) affect us. Cheers, Lesley
I remember loving any music I received as presents when I was young. I love those songs in some fashion to this day, even the cheeky songs (like "Disco Duck!"). I bet Max will love it! :)
I love the videos when you are outside walking. :)
I was a senior in HS when John Lennon was killed. I just remember how sad my mom was, my family, most everyone I knew. It was just so shocking and sad.
Beautiful vlog. Something about the snow and the cold made it more poignant. His death seems so long ago, but John Lennon is still an important part of our lives, many of us. And much maligned as she is, Yoko does tend his legacy like a garden. Peace.
It never ceases to amaze me just how quickly this anniversary seems to come around.
I remember your video last year & i remember making one myself. I might just go & check them out again.
This was obviously a heartfelt video & that came across really well. I think you know my feelings about this & what The Beatles mean to me, so i won't repeat myself.
Good to see you in widescreen as well. I guess you finally worked it all out :)
I'm slowly working the bugs out of the widescreen...in iMovie of all places. Now I need to work out my conversion issues with my camera and see if I can get better quality than this. I'm afraid this is a cheaper camera and this may be the best i can get.
It's fun to hear about your evolution of thought. I was a young teen when they appeared on Ed Sullivan for the first time and the music and activism were a huge part of my youth. Of course my kids grew up hearing the music always and to this day, my son and I keep mp3s in the car. I love the point you make about one artist leading to another. I'll never forget that date; it's one of those burned into my memory forever; peace is murdered - warmongers live. Give Peace a Chance!
Lennon's death is one of those events where we all remember exactly where we were and what we were doing at the moment we found out, I reckon. But a question for you-sorry to veer off track-but how did you vid yourself as you walked along...with no obvious outstretched arm holding the camera? Love your stuff, by the way. Just discovered it today.
I actually was holding the camera....I must just have really long arms or something and it looks like I'm not holding the camera. You're not the first person to ask me this. No, I don't have a camera crew! ;) Thanks for watching! :)
That's a good suggestion! I was thinking of showing people some of my equipment and how I edit my videos and stuff. I'll put that on the long list of ideas I want to do! :)
I was in the 2nd/3rd grade when the Beatles came to America. I loved them, my parents thought they were ridiculous. The first Beatles song I ever owned was "I want to hold your hand". When John Lennon was killed, I was a young mother- my son had just turned one year old, and I vividly remember thinking that my son would never know who this man or the Beatles were. I was so wrong. My son owns every recording they ever did and he is a huge Beatles fan. John lives on through his music.
Your story gives me goosebumps! I have a cousin who is 10 years younger than me, and she's into the Beatles and Lennon very much too! I think with things like the Love show in Vegas and the Across the Universe movie, young people are constantly getting reintroduced to this timeless music!
Nice video! I know that this is a passionate subject for you. The park is beautiful! Hope you are having a great week so far and that your Holiday season is fantastic. HUGS xoxo So nice to see you.
yep. I remember your vlog last year - and I'll probably leave the same comment!
I only remember a handful of days of my life so vividly and tangibly regarding world events- - where I was and what I was doing. John Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, Dr. King, the moon landing, John Lennon, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Challenger disaster, Princess Diana, and 9/11.
I was trying to see how they all fit together: most- but not all- are tragic deaths. I think what ties them together is the impact of loss of innocence.
I remember the news of the shooting too. I remember what a shock it was. I have never been a fan of any of the beatles. But, John was a favored Icon of the culture. I think part of the shock was also that much more innocence was taken from our culture. We didnt see violence like that back then. Least not like we do now. Was a sad day indeed.
What park is that in Appleton? I have tried to place it but I cant. I guess we are in for another blast of white crap. I am so over snow already!
I found this year a little weird. Little was said about JFK's assassination on Nov 22 (45 years) or that Pearl Harbor was yesterday (67 yrs. To me, those are landmark dates in our history as well. Makes you wonder if when our generation, since we are the last generation to remember when he was alive, gets older if the date will be less remembered.
So it's weird that I post a tribute to one of my heros on the day that he was killed? I don't have the personal connection to JFK to really talk about it nor do I with Pearl Harbor, although I did take note. I think we all pay tribute to the things that left a mark on our lives. If you remember, i did a video about 9-11.
unhunh... I remember. No, not what you did is weird. I meant that I didn't see a lot in the news or here about those days where I've seen things done in the past. I don't have a connection either besides they mark our history in some way.
I do think it's weird that we see nothing in print about A LOT of these dates. Even on 9-11, the commemoration is practically there anymore, only a few short years later. Heck, a year after 9-11, I couldn't even find a local church that had a service to commemorate the day! And think about Memorial Day and Veterans Day, how often they downplay the meaning of those days. <<<<333
JFK was killed on the same day as my birthday, only 3 yrs prior to my birth. I hear about it and am reminded about it every year. How would our world be different if he were allowed to stay on this earth and continue to make a change? The same goes for John? Imagine!
I was too young to understand the impact of John Lennon and the Beatles. And I too did not really begin to understand the impact of the Beatles until college. My favorite song of John's (I believe) is Imagine. I watched a documentary on Annie Liebowitz, and did you know that she photographed John & Yoko the night before his death and that is the picture they ran on the front of the Rolling Stone cover the next day. It's the one where he is nude curled up next to Yoko fully clothed.
yep I think I remember you talking about this last year (those 52 weeks went very quick!) - amazing and sad to think he was just 40 when he died, who knows what he could have gone on to achieve...
What's really scary is that I'm getting close to 40 as well! He accomplished so much in that short time, that it doesn't seem possible to me to ever do such things.
Well, though I was only four months old when John Lennon died, I do agree on the effects and influence he has on the world. I once bashed my old friend for being too big of a John Lennon fan. I think I may have done the wrong thing. I will call him later (been a few years) and apologize.
I think it's very easy for us all to make judgments on an artist until we start to learn about them. For those of us that were very young, there was just no way to even comprehend what he meant to the world or what his death was about.
You know, nothing has marked the passing of the year more than watching this video, seeing you walking around on the snow, and remembering watching the one from last year. Gives you a lot to think about...
I remember the news clearly, and although I remember being surprised, I don't think it had an appropriate level of impact despite the fact my Mum used to play The Beatles all the time.
The most surprising thing about this video was your opinion of him when you were young. Discuss.
You want to know what's really funny about my upload from last year? I finished editing that video and uploaded it right after our first Skype! Discuss! :P
The discussion is that if you remember an individual Skype conversation then we haven't been doing it enough! Busy lives ftl.
Wow, considering I posted my first ever video in mid-October, the idea that we knew eachother well enough to Skype six weeks later is surprising. A week is a long time in online land when you're a noob.
I'll always remember that Skype convo because a) It was our first and b) it lasted until about 4 in the morning on my side and then i edited a video after that! Who needs sleep when you have friends on the other side of the planet!
Gary, I found your vlog today very moving and thank you for filling out for me some of what makes you, you! Would that there could be a day when war was really over. I find it incredible that you can string your thoughts together, walk on what appears to be freshly fallen snow in a beautiful setting (thanks for that!) and film all at once! However do you film as there seems to be no evidence of anyone holding the camera for you? (((hugs))) Great vid. Jacquie (UK)x
I'm definitely recording myself. Somebody asked me the same thing as you don't see my arm either! Maybe it's the fact that I have very long arms and just hold my camera a certain way? Trust me, I need to be alone and have quiet time when I'm recording these thoughts. Thank you for the comment! :)
What did you play in the orchestra? That's awesome! Elenor Rigby is one of my favorite Beatles tracks too, about how two such lonely people's live ultimately cross each other. Good, brilliant stuff.
I really like it when you make videos like this where you just talk.
I'm only just now, in my early twenties, starting to learn about who John was. There is more I could write here but I have to get back to studying. Thanks for making this video.
Dude retitle this video......strawberry fields or some shit. Screw Lennon

Great video buddy. Great point about the ripple effect too.
I've never been to the Rock Hall of Fame but you described a very vivid and powerful image.

I'm planning a trip there in May for my birthday with a few YouTubers. How far is Cleveland from NY?

I guess you finally worked it all out :)
andymooseman 3 years ago

ShaunClarkRobertson 3 years ago
I actually was holding the camera....I must just have really long arms or something and it looks like I'm not holding the camera. You're not the first person to ask me this. No, I don't have a camera crew! ;) Thanks for watching! :)
anakin1814 3 years ago
Thanks for replying Anakin. Perhaps if several people ask you the same questions you should have a special FAQ video? ;)
ShaunClarkRobertson 3 years ago
That's a good suggestion! I was thinking of showing people some of my equipment and how I edit my videos and stuff. I'll put that on the long list of ideas I want to do! :)
anakin1814 3 years ago
I was in the 2nd/3rd grade when the Beatles came to America. I loved them, my parents thought they were ridiculous. The first Beatles song I ever owned was "I want to hold your hand". When John Lennon was killed, I was a young mother- my son had just turned one year old, and I vividly remember thinking that my son would never know who this man or the Beatles were. I was so wrong. My son owns every recording they ever did and he is a huge Beatles fan. John lives on through his music.
imperceptibleme 3 years ago
Your story gives me goosebumps! I have a cousin who is 10 years younger than me, and she's into the Beatles and Lennon very much too! I think with things like the Love show in Vegas and the Across the Universe movie, young people are constantly getting reintroduced to this timeless music!

Nice video! I know that this is a passionate subject for you. The park is beautiful! Hope you are having a great week so far and that your Holiday season is fantastic. HUGS xoxo So nice to see you.

anakin1814 3 years ago
LeSaMilano 3 years ago
I was trying to see how they all fit together: most- but not all- are tragic deaths. I think what ties them together is the impact of loss of innocence.
LeSaMilano 3 years ago
In my lifetime , I definitely remember the Challenge disaster, Princess Diana, Curt Cobain, and 9/11.
In the end, yeah, it's all about the loss of innocence and what these things represent. So sad...
anakin1814 3 years ago
I remember the news of the shooting too. I remember what a shock it was. I have never been a fan of any of the beatles. But, John was a favored Icon of the culture. I think part of the shock was also that much more innocence was taken from our culture. We didnt see violence like that back then. Least not like we do now. Was a sad day indeed.
What park is that in Appleton? I have tried to place it but I cant. I guess we are in for another blast of white crap. I am so over snow already!
karen32862 3 years ago
The park actually isn't in Appleton, it's farther north on the Fox!
I'm over this snow too! It just never stops and technically, it's not even winter yet! Ack!
anakin1814 3 years ago
I knew that was the Fox River. It looks very similar to the park on the fox we live near in Appleton. Hope you survived the latest blast.

LilCav68 3 years ago
So it's weird that I post a tribute to one of my heros on the day that he was killed? I don't have the personal connection to JFK to really talk about it nor do I with Pearl Harbor, although I did take note. I think we all pay tribute to the things that left a mark on our lives. If you remember, i did a video about 9-11.
anakin1814 3 years ago
unhunh... I remember. No, not what you did is weird. I meant that I didn't see a lot in the news or here about those days where I've seen things done in the past. I don't have a connection either besides they mark our history in some way.
LilCav68 3 years ago
I do think it's weird that we see nothing in print about A LOT of these dates. Even on 9-11, the commemoration is practically there anymore, only a few short years later. Heck, a year after 9-11, I couldn't even find a local church that had a service to commemorate the day! And think about Memorial Day and Veterans Day, how often they downplay the meaning of those days. <<<<333

Geez i wish i lived there looks wonderfull..
Did you say U2 is bigger than the beatles..?
RIP John
TrueBlueAustralian 3 years ago
To me, I'm an even bigger U2 fan than I am Beatles fan. And we all know that the Beatles are bigger than Jesus! ;)
anakin1814 3 years ago
JFK was killed on the same day as my birthday, only 3 yrs prior to my birth. I hear about it and am reminded about it every year. How would our world be different if he were allowed to stay on this earth and continue to make a change? The same goes for John? Imagine!
vjm1234 3 years ago
So many amazing people are taken from us each day. The world would be so different if they all stayed. Imagine, indeed.
anakin1814 3 years ago
I was too young to understand the impact of John Lennon and the Beatles. And I too did not really begin to understand the impact of the Beatles until college. My favorite song of John's (I believe) is Imagine. I watched a documentary on Annie Liebowitz, and did you know that she photographed John & Yoko the night before his death and that is the picture they ran on the front of the Rolling Stone cover the next day. It's the one where he is nude curled up next to Yoko fully clothed.
vjm1234 3 years ago
I knew that about that photograph with him and Yoko. Isn't that mind-boggling? The photo seems so much more intense knowing that.

anakin1814 3 years ago
yep I think I remember you talking about this last year (those 52 weeks went very quick!) - amazing and sad to think he was just 40 when he died, who knows what he could have gone on to achieve...
21stCenturyCat 3 years ago
What's really scary is that I'm getting close to 40 as well! He accomplished so much in that short time, that it doesn't seem possible to me to ever do such things.
anakin1814 3 years ago
Well, though I was only four months old when John Lennon died, I do agree on the effects and influence he has on the world. I once bashed my old friend for being too big of a John Lennon fan. I think I may have done the wrong thing. I will call him later (been a few years) and apologize.
zottepark 3 years ago
I think it's very easy for us all to make judgments on an artist until we start to learn about them. For those of us that were very young, there was just no way to even comprehend what he meant to the world or what his death was about.
anakin1814 3 years ago
You know, nothing has marked the passing of the year more than watching this video, seeing you walking around on the snow, and remembering watching the one from last year. Gives you a lot to think about...
I remember the news clearly, and although I remember being surprised, I don't think it had an appropriate level of impact despite the fact my Mum used to play The Beatles all the time.
The most surprising thing about this video was your opinion of him when you were young. Discuss.
zebidee55 3 years ago
You want to know what's really funny about my upload from last year? I finished editing that video and uploaded it right after our first Skype! Discuss! :P
anakin1814 3 years ago
The discussion is that if you remember an individual Skype conversation then we haven't been doing it enough! Busy lives ftl.
Wow, considering I posted my first ever video in mid-October, the idea that we knew eachother well enough to Skype six weeks later is surprising. A week is a long time in online land when you're a noob.
zebidee55 3 years ago
I'll always remember that Skype convo because a) It was our first and b) it lasted until about 4 in the morning on my side and then i edited a video after that! Who needs sleep when you have friends on the other side of the planet!

I remember the video you did last year like it was yesterday.

Jacquie (UK)x
whistonlass 3 years ago
I'm definitely recording myself. Somebody asked me the same thing as you don't see my arm either! Maybe it's the fact that I have very long arms and just hold my camera a certain way? Trust me, I need to be alone and have quiet time when I'm recording these thoughts. Thank you for the comment! :)
anakin1814 3 years ago
wow, it's ironic, that just tonight I randomly chose to watch "The Beatles' Yellow Submarine" without knowing of the anniversary.
My all-time favorite song of the Beatles is "Eleanor Rigby" because we played it in Orchestra once, and the cello part is awesome
brojoghost 3 years ago
What did you play in the orchestra? That's awesome! Elenor Rigby is one of my favorite Beatles tracks too, about how two such lonely people's live ultimately cross each other. Good, brilliant stuff.
anakin1814 3 years ago
I play the cello :)

COOL!
anakin1814 3 years ago
I really like it when you make videos like this where you just talk.
I'm only just now, in my early twenties, starting to learn about who John was. There is more I could write here but I have to get back to studying. Thanks for making this video.
Aaroncast86 3 years ago
You are very welcome! I was also in my early 20s when I started to "get it" about John Lennon as well.
anakin1814 3 years ago
I can appreciate what John and Yoko had. I don't consider Yoko to be an artist as much as an opportunist.
