  • what command do you use to get your dogs to do that?

  • Wywalone te psy . Tyle umią i są bardzo mądre.

  • I have a border collie as well. We are just starting therapy dog training. It's exciting! I was just wondering what command and cue you gave your dog when you had them go in backward circles?? Thanks!

  • Your videos have helped me sooo much in training my year old Aussie pup, she's coming along quite nicely and a lot of our success is thanks to you! Thank you for posting yourself and your amazing dogs!

    <3 Tatum the Aussie

  • what i dont get is, you tell it backup....but hwen do you change the word you use? you obviously dont say backup to get it to do a circle..

  • amazing video. Selma just made it official that she knows that trick! I was so happy that i ran up to Selma and gave her the biggest hug ever. :) Keep the amazing videos comming. Right now we are working on "limp" and "Shy"(where the dog hides his/her face with his/her paw).

    ~ Jenny and Selma~

  • my gran's border collie died 4 years ago next march, she was my best friend and very smart, she wouldnt do tricks at home but when we took her to the caravan she would come to life and do loads of tricks... I still remember her even though I was 10 when she died and Im now 14, I now have a choc lab, who's coming up for 5 in Jan.. He's great when he listens to you :L

  • Great vid!! Illustrating the "click" is very helpful. :) looks like foun for both!

  • Great job!

  • how many dogs do you have? lol

  • Taught my four year old puppy how to sit, lay down, shake, roll over, play dead, stand on two legs, speak and also starting agility training using your methods! just started "circles" which is her running in circles around me :) plus i'm only 13

  • @IanandZach that is amazing work for anyone of any age and the fact that you're only 13 is really impressive! great going! your dog sounds so awesome and cute and well trained :-) keep up the wonderful work!

  • what is your verbel cure for backwards circles and reverse weaves please. thanks

    mary

  • if i dont have a clicker, would treats work ?

  • @sugarismyhorse yes they will, also using a marker word in place of the click such as "YES!" works too :-)

  • amazing job and vid, thanks for sharing,my aussie did it but not as tight as i wish i'm gonna use obstacle just like you do so thanfs again!!!!

  • I've been wondering how to train this and just happened to stumble on this video. I don't know why I never saw it before! Thank you for making this!!! - Jillian and River

  • That's amazing!!!

  • Really nice video's!! I teach my dog the tricks to (rottweiler). She really likes it.

But wich command you give by this trick?

  • Now my Border Collie Puppie is 3 Month old and his name is Sully. He is awsome and learned a lot and fast :) ... He knows "sit" - "down" - "take a bow" - "stay" "slalom through my legs" "to sit pretty" and command, I don't know how to translate is. I think it's called "return". The german word is "kehrt". The dog is sitting on my left side and I say "kehrt / return" and he must go around me to the left side again. (Gosh I hate my english) ... And now we train the backwards circles :)

  • Your methods of training tricks are so clever! Awesome vid I love it! And just look how cute little puppy Mabel looks! I've decided to start really working on new tricks, and of course your channel is awesome for tricks ideas!

  • I have seen all of your videos and I am a fan :D ... If my english would be better, I would write a lot more :( ... In a few weeks I get a Border Collie Puppie and thank you for those great videos, so I can teach him these tricks :D .... (sorry for my bad english)

  • thank you so much for your wonderful comment!! and your English is very good so don't worry! I'm excited that you are getting a Border Collie soon! best of luck and do write to me if you have any questions.

  • @19Balu87

Hey there!! You can also get a dog from a shelter, it's more challenging to train it but more rewarding, and you're helping it!!

  • I am a big fan of your videos and of course Hollie and mabel. I like watching the videos when they were puppies. NOw they are an adult dogs. Love your training videos. I would absolutly try this if I ad a dog. Keep up the good work.

  • aww, thanks so much for your wonderful comments, it's so lovely of you to be so supportive :-) hope you have an awesome week :-)

  • you welcome. And yes I will have a great week. Today I'm going on kick boxing. My new hobby I thing. I like it a lot. You are so kind answering all those coments and video requests. I Absolutly adore hollie and mabel and I can't stop watchimg your videos. Every time when I watchyour vids I just have to leave a comment for your hard work and training. I think it was easy with 2 angels like that! hehe.

  • aww, that's cool, I'm glad you have a fun hobby :-) I really do appreciate the time you take to write comments to me :-) thank you so much.

  • what type dog is yours?

  • they are both Border Collies, the small dog is just a puppy in this video, she is roughly the same size as the black and white dog now :-)

  • Sian, you will never believe this!taz has finally learned this!he didn't even need the books!he just did it on his own.i even added a little twist to it.i spun around while he did it.i'm sooooooooo proud of him!

  • oh wow!!!!! that is awesome news, you and taz are such a great team :-)

  • thanx! i have seen a HUGE improvement with him.he seems to want to do more things for me.

  • Awesome! hehe they are just puppies in this vid :)

  • <3 it

  • Great video! I think, that will be helpfull! Thanks.

  • ok i think this should help. thanx!

  • ok he is now going in one circle, but he still needs to know to keep going until i say stop. any tips?

  • oh, that is great progress!! just make sure that when he completes one circle he is lined up right for the next one. if he is doing a complete circle for a reward then ask for one and a quarter circles before you reward, do this a few times and then ask for one and a half circles and so on :-)

  • ok i am starting to see some progress with my dog now. i am at the point to where i stand on the book. i will tell you when iget to the point where i remove the obstacles cuz i know we will have some problems there.

  • this didn't work on my dog at all

  • I'm sorry to hear that, if you tell me where you're stuck I might be able to help?

  • Thank you 4 this great video! I'll try to prove it with my dog :)

  • Really, your videos are really informative!! Keep them coming!! Absolutely love your training method!

  • awesome video how long did it take to achieve this

  • thank you! I don't like to give a time frame on tricks because I won't always train a trick every single day and also I never know when to call a trick 'done' as I always feel it could be improved! if you do 2-3 sessions a day of 10 minutes a day then you should be seeing good progress in a week.

  • Amazing video, i only tryed to do it, but you done amazingly!! Thank you!

  • your vidios a great ther always giving me new ideers for tricks to do with my dogs.

you explane it so esay so everbody can do it.

    So thank you for that.

  • thank you so much :-) it makes it so worthwhile when lovely people like you take the time to watch and comment :-)

  • this is a great easy to train video. tks

  • your legs are nice

  • What I love the most is your bathrobe. Ha Ha! I find I do my best training in the early mornings when I'm still in PJ's!

  • haha! me too as you can see! it's relaxing to train in your PJ's isn't it?!

  • 1:25 doing doing doing

    lol

  • ☆☆☆☆☆ 5 stars for a brilliant video!

  • hey!!,,what did you name this trick?,,i've got spin & other spin to well...spin both ways,, I've got circle me & go around me,,for the dog to circle me or my leg both way...i've never tried another object...thats first i guess...hmm, she doesn't know backwards either...guess this will take some work :)

we still don't have the feet walking,,she will heel under my legs now && target one foot or the other,,but not both,,we'll get it!!

    THANKS FOR THE GREEAT VIDS!!

  • I use the cues 'twirl' and 'rotate' depending on which direction. A thesaurus is a great way to get ideas for new cues! keep going with the feet thing, the hardest bit is getting both feet on but it WILL happen :-) hang in there and jackpot with the treats when it happens :-)

  • thanks for the thesaurus idea thats awesome!! && omg your pup is so cute in this video!!

  • How old was Mabel for this? She looks young, how cute! I was curious how to do this myself. Really good tutorial :)

  • I think she was about 4 months in this, she has never liked the trick as much as Holly though, Holly will just do this forever! haha! thanks for the nice comment, this video was so much better with the old audio though :-( might remake it at some point!

  • thank you, thank you, thank you!

youve got all the more advanced tricks i was looking for! ^_^ thank you so much!

  • I think I've commented on this vid before, but since I'm not sure I'll comment again -- VERY helpful vid! I'd love to teach this trick to my Miniature Schnauzer and my sheltie. I love how you layed everything out simply and very clearly, step by step.

  • aww, thank you and please comment as much as you like :D I love it! I was a bit disappointed that I had to replace the audio but never mind! do let me know how you get on with training :-)

  • five stars! thanks for posting this!

  • thank you!! that's very kind.

  • amazing as always sian! i want to train my beagle milo to be just like ur dogs! u've inspired me so much!

  • that is such a lovely comment! thank you so much. you know you can always get in touch if you need to ask any questions or just want to chat about training :-)

  • Great! Thanks a lot, now I have new ideas for training my Cookie!

  • I just taught my 11 year old dog this trick today! He surprised me by learning it in just a couple of minutes!! I actually didn't use clicker training, though i do for most of Logan's training. I also used obstacles, but it wasn't very long before those weren't needed... Your vids are awesome and help A LOT of people with training. It will also help to strengthen the bond between owners and their dogs, as they can see how much fun training is and that the possibilities are endless! Keep it up!

  • Thank you so so much for your kind words and your video response. Your Logan is a wonder dog! He picked this up so quick, anyone who thinks that older dogs are difficult to train and slow to pick things up should go and watch your videos!! your a wonderful trainer!

  • Comment removed

  • Very good but when you are clicking you are actually rewarding a stationary position rather then telling the dog the backward movement around is what gets it. But it appears to be a good method of training the circles.

  • thanks for the comment :-) I'm sorry to disagree but if you watch the video closely I use the click to end the behaviour and the dog stops AFTER the click, like at the beginning when I'm asking for half circles you will see that I'm always clicking at the moment she is moving and then she stops immediately when she hears the click which is the correct response :-)

  • Amazing! Thanks zsainz1!

I have a 9 month border collie and want to start getting into clicker training.

    You've inspired me.

  • That is so cool :-) get in touch anytime you have any questions :-)

    Happy training.

    Sian.

  • This is so much help! and you all are so cute!

    *subscribed*!

  • hehe, thanks soooo much :D we all blush and send you a hug!

  • Omg thank you soooo much!!

I'm defently going to try this with Cindy now!! =D

  • cool! let me know how you get on :-)

  • Well she is kinda struggling up to the part going around me when I said on the book.

  • hehehe... your robe looks nice! im so very thankful that you keep on making this videos! thanks! whats the cue to make my dog do the backward circles?

  • hehe, thanks I like training in my robe :D I use the cues twirl and rotate (depending on which way I want her to go) but I'm sure you could think of better ones!

  • Awesome! Very helpful. :) 5*'s

  • another truly amazing vid.. well done sian and holly and mabel-*****5

  • Thanks for posting this clip. It's very clear and shows how to do this with things right around the house. Great work!

  • hey. i like the way you train your dog. i subscribed now to your channel hoping i can learn more from you. your great hope you post more tutorial. iam grateful! more power.

  • Oh thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment :-) If you ever have any questions then just let me know.

  • I love the concept, the process, the robe, the music, and the dogs. Such a fabulous combination. You are soooo terrific.

  • hehe, the robe got more comments than I expected :D thank you for your kind words, I really think you are terrific too!

  • you seem like a natural born dog trainer..hehe! 10/10*

    AMAZING!

  • hehe, thank you so much :D

  • Thanks for the inspiration! We have added this to jessie'srepertoire.

I was amazed at how easy it was. I guess that's what we get for having clicker savy dogs!

  • great! I'm so glad it worked for you! yes, doesn't the clicker make training so easy and fun?!

  • clicka!

  • THANKS!!!!! Great video!

  • Cool, I will try this, I have been wanting to teach my dog to do this.

  • Awesome! Good luck training, I'm sure you will do great and you must let me know how you get on and let me know if you have any questions :-)

  • Thanks for posting!! I've always loved this trick! Very clear tutorial

  • Thank you so much for your lovely comment :-)

  • You make it look so easy! How old was Mabel in this video? I am trying to introduce "back" to Keen. She doesn't seem to care about backing much yet. But I really want to teach this one asap!

Thanks again Sian, great teaching video.

  • thank you so much :-) it is pretty easy once your dog gets the first little turn backwards, it's just getting started that takes a bit of time! Mabel was around 4 months in this video. You must let me know how you get on!

  • Glad to see I'm not the only one who trains dogs in their jim-jams!! LOL x

  • LOL, yes you will see a few videos of me in my jimmy jams! got to love training in comfort!! :-) xxx

  • Hi Sian

I've sent you my video of teaching Vegas to do a backwards circle. My goal is to perform the backwards weave. She seams to have trouble going through my legs. Am I going in the wrong direction? Any tips?

  • Good lesson.

  • great tutorial, I'm goint to try this one too!

  • yay! so glad you liked it and are going to try it out :-)

  • Really cool! Great training. We also got one of those clickers from PetSmart.

    Love your dog!!

  • very kind :-) thank you so much!

  • Amazing, I love it! I want to get into canine freestyle, thanks!

  • So glad you liked it :-)

  • Thank you for your help. You are awesome!

    Pam

  • Well, when I started trying the backing up circles, Bandit kept targeting the books with his hind leg. So, I changed what we were working on and worked on the lifting of the hind leg. He almost has it. I will put a video up soon. Do you have any other techniques that can work to do the backing up in a circle? You're Awesome! Pam

  • I'll mail you some suggestions :-)

  • I love the backward circles. I am going to work on them right now with Bandit. Hopefully we can get it. THANKS! Pam

  • I'm in the middle of teaching my dog to Spin (spin clockwise) and Turn (spin counter clockwise). How do I differentiate revolving backwards around me from my Spin and Turn? Also, what are you calling the backwards circle or are you only using a hand signal?

  • I just started clicker training about 8 months ago, and loved this video! I'm working on lots of stuff for competition obedience right now, so I won't train this right away. But I do like to add fun things to my dog's "bag of tricks." We're doing therapy work in a nursing home and the residents love to see cute things. I also think tricks like this soften the blow for some people who are afraid of my breed (Doberman), or have misconceptions about them. Thanks for posting it!

  • I'm really glad you liked it. My parents used to own a nursing home and they used to love it when animals came in, as you would. You are spot on about it being a great thing to make a dog seem less scary, who can be scared of a dog that does a bunch of silly but very clever and cooperative tricks?! Keep up the great work.

  • Great video, I'll be sure to use this technique to teach my dogs... Let's see if a pitbull can do it eheheheh!

  • Yes! that would be awesome to see, I'd love a video response of a pitbull learning this ;) (hint hint!!)

LOL, anyway let me know how you get on and I love answering questions so mail me if you get stuck.

    Happy training!

  • I just started teaching Sparky how to do this today, and he's almost got it already! I'm sure he'll have this trick flat down learned by tomorrow evening. I've been videoing our progress, hopefully I can post it soon.

Thanks again for showing us how to do this!!

  • Wow! that's really quick :-) I can't wait to see Sparky doing his thing!! I'm really glad that you liked my video, if your video isn't going to be a video response to this then please let me know when it's up because I'd love to see it :-)

    happy training!

  • Thats great!! I can't wait to try it on my pup!!

  • Awesome! let me know how it goes. What kind of dog have you got?

  • I have an Aussie and a Corgi. But I'm in love with BCs! lol

  • If I get another dog in the future then an Aussie will be very high on the list! As you can tell I have a huge soft spot for collies though :-)

  • Great video! Gave me some new ideas!! thx!

  • Do you use only nonverbal cues or verbal as well? Tonks seems to prefer nonverbal but I've hit a bit of a road block and think I might be asking her to do to much to soon. Any tips on what you do for a clicker training session like this one, and how many tricks you work on at a time (and for how long) would be GREATLY appreciated.

We've been dabbling with "no" from your other video and this is now on our list as well :-)

  • Wow, this was great! Now I feel ready to teach my Sparky how to walk around me backwards. Thanks for showing us how to do it!

    Happy New Year!

  • This method is so much more efficient than the clumsier one I used to get this behavior!! Thank you!!

  • Great! glad you liked it, I was having no end of problems training this so I decided that I needed to get down on their level and have them go round something else, it seemed to work a treat :-)

  • oh my goodness Sian! I cant thank you enough for making this video! I've always wanted to teach Samson this trick but I had no idea how! I love the music as well :D Holly and Mabel are so clever and you are such an amzing dog trainer!

    5* and *favs*

    ^^

  • Thank you! you're a wonderful friend. the very best thing about youtube is meeting people like you :-)

  • Nice... :)

    Happy New Year :)

    Maciek

  • Happy New Year to you too, hope you have a great 2009!

  • Awesome!! This is a very creative way to teach back circles, and completly different than how I taught Jesse. Definalty 5*****!! ~Heather and Jesse~

  • Thank you so much Heather, that means a lot, especially coming from you!!

  • Amazing idea! Great video!

  • Hehe! had to favorite that! God, I would have never thought to have done it that way! I've got the backwards circles from another way, but I am TOTALLY going to use this to teach Splash to do Backwards Circles in front of me at a distance! That would be very cool! Thanks Sian! You are a great teacher! So inventive and creative.

  • Excellent work! Great explanation step by step. My dog loves this move, too.

    Happy New Year!

  • Thank you! Happy new year to you too :-)

  • Great video.

  • great as always

  • Great job - 5* and a favorite! Backwards circles and weaves is our next video (it was supposed to be out by now, but I got a cold - yuck!). I haven't come across a good video on how to teach this and was considering making one. Now, I don't have to. And, I like your method better than how we stumbled into the behavior. Well done!

  • I'm of the firm opinion that there can never be to many tutorials, even if it's of the same thing! you should still make that video as I'm sure it would help loads of people! Thank you very much for the favourite and stars :-)

  • Great Sian - we'll be giving that a go - have tried it using a corner and chairs as obstacles but have only got half way. And he goes wide.

Dancing in your jimmy jams - good one!

    Happy New Year

    Sue

  • yes I had the same problem with Holly going wide, I hope this helps. Keeping the obstacles all round and then reducing the size of them helped too. Yep I do a lot of training in my jim jams!!

Happy new year to you too.

  • Great job! You know I'll be trying this with Tonks soon!

    5 stars!!!

  • Thank you! you are always so very nice about my videos and it means a lot to me :-)

  • That's a great video! I have been wondering how to teach backwards circle and your idea is brilliant! I will start trying it today! Thanks for sharing this!

  • Thank you so much! please do let me know how it goes and mail me any questions.

  • I'm definatley trying this one!

  • great! let me know how you get on!

  • Brill training video. Thanks for sharing.5 stars

  • so cool sian, mabel is learning so fast, congratulation!!!

    greaaaat video, thanks

  • OMG! I'm totally teaching Happy to do this!! REALLY GREAT JOB!! But I want to ask about that trick, I cant get Happy stand on the books! I forgot wats its called=P

  • 5 STARS and I favorited this video:)! I have never seen the backward circle taught this way...very creative;)! Did you make this up on your own? I have only seen it taught with the use of an x-pen (puppy pen). What cue do you use for this trick? Brilliant mehtod and video:)!

    Ashley & Kaine

  • Thank you very much! And yes I made it up on my own. I was finding it really hard to teach and Holly just kept going really wide so I threw the rule book out the window and tried something that I thought might be easier for them. It's pretty good because if you want them to do a backwards circle around something other that you, like an object, they already know how to do it. I use the cue 'twirl', couldn't think of anything else!!

  • That was great! I liked the step by step approach! (but then I am partial, check out my Shut the Door video! I got dizzy watching your b/w BC do the circles! LOL!

    Great freestyle move!

  • Thank you! I really love your videos, you do a great job. Mabel loves watching youtube and the TV too! hehe!

  • Jessie watches TV too. I've never had a dog do that before! She runs at it if a strange 'dog' appears in her living room and she'll talk to it (we are trying to get this on video). There doesn't have to be sound either. She ran around the TV to where a cat went when it ran off to one side, and she attempted to grab a huge ant with her front teeth on my parents big screen TV. LOL!

I am glad to see others train their dogs in their comfy night clothes too!

  • it's just too cute, Mabel is the only dog I've had that does it too. Isn't it funny?! I have a video of her watching youtube, she makes me laugh with it!

  • that was excellent! i was wondering really how to do it. :P now i have to teach that to roxy! haha. and i love how at one part your in a robe, comfy pants and slippers. haha! :P

  • good, I'm glad it was a help :-) I was really chilling out in that clip in me robe, ha ha!

  • impresionante, muy bueno

  • WOW! GREAT how to video!

    5 Stars *****/*****

  • GOOD¡¡¡¡¡

Very clever. And a uniform very homey. ;)

    Five stars for you. :))))

  • lol. Thank you for the stars :-)
