It's an I.Q. Zoo machine. The machine is programmed with a set solution. It always starts first with a corner. The chicken sees a light in the "thinking room" and pecks a button there for a little feed. The chicken is always fed regardless if there is a player or not. At the closing hour of the day, the remaining daily feed ration is dumped for the chicken to eat, and the coinbox locks out. It resets the next day.

lol of course it's a real chicken, sorry to bust your bubble tho - but most likely a bit of corn just falls over the relevant button, and when this chicken eats the corn it lights up the square - nothing to do with th chicken actually making a decision... it just wants the corn.
