Very good review/tutorial and...btw clearly to understand as well ;-) . Thx for sharing. It helps me for my decision. I think, I´m going to purchase this little friend.
Great review...well done! I had the MKE 300 and just recently got the 400 for use on my Pentax K5. I was looking for reviews to see what the optimal settings were and your tests helped greatly. My one gripe with the review and maybe I missed it but you didn't test the different power button settings with the middle mode of the low-cut filter. I would be interested to see how it changed the results of the road test. Thanks again! Jeremy
The MKE 400 is a great physical design, but a lousy mic that doesn't get the job done. It simply isn't directional enough. Neither is the Rode. The ART-55 or 6550 is still the winner. There's a cheap ebay shotgun mic that is much butter than the MKE 400.
Also next time you should test indoors where there is echo. That is the real test of these mics.
@druidweresmycar Oh, that's a difficult question and depends on the sourrounding sound, style of music and the echo, but I really can't say if this is an appropriate mic for music recording. If the music is loud there might be some noise. I think the microphone is able to, but there might be even better ones for that purpose, which are of course more expensive.
Thanks for the review, I'm looking to purchase my first microphone for video recording. Not sure if this is the one, but it's nice to hear it perform.
I'm trying to find a good microphone, this review was perfect! The indoor at 2:45 and later was really good to see how it performs. I will use it for indoors in complete silence and outside walking in the city, with lots of car and people noise. You think it will be still good?
@TheDigitalPhotograph I guess it will perform fine if you are not too far away from the camera. If it is really loud around you should be at least one meter away from it, because it is not a professional microphone which focuses straight on your voice and filters all the surrounding sounds, but it is one of the best you can get in that price range.
@kretzkid98 Sorry, but I think I cannot really help you with that. In my opinion it is the camera which has got an AGC and not the microphone. If you want to get rid of the AGC you should consider a Magic Lantern Firmware Hack (if you own a Canon).
