Christ that's good. So hard to bring out the musicality in this song behind all the technical aspects. This is one of my favourite renditions of this song...including Mike's own performances.
We've spoken before... it's a wonderful rendition. Heavy burden... I don't agree with the tempo critiques either. I think aerial boundaries was always about the echo...
I love this piece of music, and have been listening to it for 20 years now. This is an excellent interpretation of one of the best guitar pieces ever written.
This composition is a milestone in guitar playing technique, and your interpretation and execution beautifully catches the spirit of this masterpiece. Thanks for sharing, Michael Hedges would be proud.
I can't even believe people are talking about the tempo, you sound great! It takes somwone special to even get it at all. I met mike and talked shop. He was going to release an album with bass and drums if you can believe that! He was very excited about the prospect, as was I! I miss him. you keep it alive, It, him and you have that Hendrix thing. Wild, loose and different,t with conviction!
I have to agree with RegTedSan -- best non-Hedges-himself version I've ever heard. I was fortunate enough to have seen Michael in concert 3 times: 1987, at the "old" Iron Horse," about a year later at Smith College, where he appeared with Leo Kottke -- at the end they did "Pinball Wizard" as a duet, and brought the house down; and art some strange church group meeting house. Absolutely mesmerizing, I still can't believe he's gone...
Hey this is fantastic! Is there at the and a little difference that you play? For me it sounds a little off. I don't know if M.H. did it on the L.P, but anyway, you're doing a great job and I would be my own hero If I could play this song! And yes, Michael lives! Thanx for uploading and have a good time!
@LanakilaIesu Yeah his book is a must have if you want to tackle Aerial Boundaries or any of his other compositions. This is a piece that I want to play as close to the way Hedges plays it as possible.
This song is best when you watch the guitarist playing it. Its the performance as whole that makes this song awesome watching hand movements and all the crazy stuff
The slowing down and speeding up is what I like about Hedges' performance...it's what you get to do when you're playing all the parts yourself. You've done an outstanding job capturing the brilliance of his song. Love it and go on and make it your own from here!
Andrew....your version is AMAZING...i was a Hedges fan big time and YOU my friend.....are way too good for a park....the original spirit of the Windham Hill label is in you....love it!
@jazzpsalti, thanks 4 the comment!! I've loved Michael's playing since the first time I heard it back in the late 80's & I've heard SO MANY people try to play this, but BY FAR....yours is the most impressive. Your right he slows down on the original recording but the average person, such as myself, misses it. Either way, your playing is superb!!
this is honestly my favorite cover of the song i've heard so far. it sounds amazing, and i even love the little things you added on to some of the parts-genius. Right on, man!
@GGBundy Yeah, a lot of people have been talking about the tempo... I am fast, about 8-10bpm too quick. But a big issue is that Mike progressively drags on the studio version. By the end of the piece, he's down a good 15bpm from where he started. This is probably because he had to throttle back for the four finger figure in the middle of the piece...
I stay completely on tempo front to back in this performance. So the places where Hedges slowed down on record are definitely going to sound fast.
@zebidee86 It is a bit fast. If you read Andrews comment above he says he plays it fast. Although Michael does slow down a bit..... not sure its 15bps........ I dont think hes doing it to for any other eason then thats what he wanted to do. I have a hard time thinking he HAD to slow down for the dificult part. Not to put Michael on a pedastool but I just dont think thats the reason.
Anyway I love this version, its the best cover I have ever seen.
Andrew, good God, man, that was wonderful. I got to see the late and very great Michael Hedges the last two tours of his life, and had tickets for the third the day he died.
Just wonderful. Enjoyed it a lot. And I see it's been going on three years since you posted. I hope to hell you're still playing guitar. And I hope you get this message.
Just checked out your facebook profile. Throw some Tommy Emmanuel in there despite the stark contrast in style and give his stunning interpretation of Classical Gas a whirl. I'd love to hear it!
Michael would be proud! I especially a fan of the ending, sounds like you added a bit more euphoria. I'm a great fan of yours. Keep doing what you doing. All the best!
@halfstepdown88 Basically I started working it out by ear, having a little knowledge of what's happening technically. and then I bought a Windham Hill video and gleaned the rest from MH's performance. Then I got a tip from a friend about Michael's string stopping technique. I'm sure I don't do this song exactly right, but it's close enough for me to be satisfied :)
@halfstepdown88 The tablature is in his book "Rhythm, Sonority, Silence". It's a must have if you want to learn this piece properly. It indicates all the string muting. One of the developmental concepts in this composition was that it might be interesting if the left and right hands each played independant parts.
There is an accurate TAB on powertab.net but I still recommend his book if you are really fascinated with Hedges work and wish to imitate him as best as possible.
I don't know, the speed gives life to his interpretation. I love it, you can just tell he's loving every minute of it. There's such a joy in his playing, you can see it on his face.
I thought that was an Andrew improv but Michael does that slide in some of his live versions. Andrew was the one who pointed that out to me. Adrew does the best cover of this I have ever heard.
Hey man, for these vids I did a few years ago in the park I used a Crate Limo TX50... not the best busking amp out there, I think the Roland CubeStreet is much better...
And my setup here is a Rainsong WS-1000 w/ Trance Amulet + Sunrise S1.
dear boy, because i don't play the guitar as you?? your hands are kissed from god...thank you dear boy I hope to see and listen your music for many many years...thanks
I don't normall post comments but as guitarist I felt the need to say your playing is fkin amazing - as perfect as the original! Your tapping looks effortless; is that just technique? A v.good guitar? Or just a lot of amplification?
You played that stunningly well - best version I have ever hear (besides the original of course). I have listened to Hedges for over 20 years and you definitely did him proud. Regarding you comments, I believe he was a better composer than a guitar player (if that is even possible). His songs would be just as beautiful on any other instrument. Will history remember him that way? Time will tell.
I should mention that there is a video of me busking on the street with my Martin, equipped with a FRAP and a Sunrise S-1 just like MH had, and I'm playing this tune and it sounds a lot better LOL
Andrew -- I've seen several of your other vids and the only question I'd like to ask is, why are you not signed to Candy Rat? Your talent is remarkable and of a very high caliber. You should be right there with Andy McKee and Antoine Dufour, at least that's how I see it.
fantastic your amazing, i'm so glad that michael's music is still played and loved, and played by people who have talent, such as "jazzpsalti", keep on going man

ooooooh WAAAAH. So a few parts weren't just like Hedges' original. Who fuckin cares. That was a great rendition. I like your attitude and park setting. Nicely done. Way to make it your own.

I'm a Michael Hedges freak. You've come as close to getting, not just the technical part, but the feeling Hedges presents. A little fast, but great cover.
Ok so MAYBE a few things LOL but jesus dude isn't it a feat that anyone can play this tune? I feel special when I play it and each time it gets better. The guy was a FREAKIN genius. And the best thing? Even those who would not follow solo guitar listen to Michael Hedges and see right past the guitar and into the soul! The eye of the composer!!
i live in his home town. and its really interesting to see how gnar his music is. he definetly thought outside the box with the hand technique. thats my favorite part.
YEAH!!! I just noticed that when I was doing a Byzantine chant gig down in Sacramento!!! We watched a lot of Bones and it was the one where nerdy dude gets accused of murder, but it's actually this other dude who's quick with the knife... then they get him and this song plays. SO badass
This is one of the most astonishing covers on YT! Love your additional ideas at the end!!!! I have the Michael Hedges book and am finding this tune a wee bit tricky in places! lol! But what a song!!!!
lol this guy^^^ you wrote some really nice comments but you thought ill of them or something? and then you went with zombie??? I mean, I know I haven't been hitting the oil of olay bottle, but....
haha jk man, thanks a lot for watching, and be sure to vote for me on guitar idol (today's the last day!)
The voicing of the accents in the circular licks with the left hand in the last 1:30 is simply awesome - so smooth, clean and beautiful.

This is one of the most astonishing covers on YT! Love your additional ideas at the end!!!! I have the Michael Hedges book and am finding this tune a wee bit tricky in places! lol! But what a song!!!!

The sound of your guitar is such an excellent expression of the emotions felt while playing...I feel them too just listening. Thank you for that!

I will say this. This guy has twice as many hits as both of the Hedges' versions of this tune on here.
