At first, I thought it was pretty logical that they suspended him, however I thought reform school was a bit over the top. My father required me to always have a pocket knife, comb and wallet on me at all times when I left the house. I always had a knife on me in school. I never threatened or stabbed anyone. We need to go back to common sense.

The knife was so that I had a tool to fix things. I mostly carried a Swiss Army knife or a Boy Scout knife. BTW. A couple of years ago, the Principal at my son's high school gave him a real nice fillet fishing knife for a school award. The difference between private and public schools!

Not one of them wanted to take that risk. They backed off and no one ever decided to try something like that with me again. Kids just dont carry that stuff around for show

12 years ago, I was 9 and in the 4th grade. I brought a pretty sharp steak knife to class one day and got suspended for a month and almost got sent to "20/20" (juvenile detention).
I knew it was wrong to bring the knife. So I wasnt shocked when I got in trouble. But I wasnt trying to kill or harm anyone. They didnt have to try sending me to jail.

its not really the teachers who make these rules, its the fearful admins who are afraid of getting sued and for every little thing that goes wrong because parent refuse to take any responsibility for thier children.
parents will sue a school at the drop of a hat, i've seen it. its why teachers and admins walk on eggshells and over-react. teachers have among the highest burn out rate. its not the kids that cause it. its the politicians, parents and admins constantly breathing down our necks.

I think that circumstances need to be taken into account in each situation. But I also know that when it comes time for me to help change that particular policy that attending school-board meetings and possibly running for school board is the way to enact that change.

The schools liked it because they felt "safe" and did not have to use common sense or critical thinking themselves. If a kid came to school with a plastic picnic knife to cut his apple with, he was treated the same way as the kid who came with a BuckMaster Navy Seal Knife.
This unyielding way of thinking is dangerous. It does not bode well for the child to learn that this is how you deal with adversity. To accept the "status quo" even though it does not make sense, will, down the road, end bad

Teachers not hardly, the people we trust our kids to everyday are people that couldn't handle a real job based on performance. Their union protects them from ever getting fired because of a lack of competency to do the job they get paid to do, it is a key part of the dumbing down of our society.

Well, if you'd listen more closely, he said that the teachers could've just taken it from him and told him why he can't bring it to school. But they suspended him for something he had no clue of. And thats one of the main reasons why America's youth are idiots, because the schools aren't giving enough education. Anyone remember the 6 year old girl who was shot and killed by her 7 year old classmate at Buell Elementary School in Flint, Michingan because he brought a gun he found to school to show his friends? Yeah even kids can kill people. Now a knife is not nearly as bad as a gun but its still a weapon and he still could have hurt someone.

12 years ago, I was 9 and in the 4th grade. I brought a pretty sharp steak knife to class one day and got suspended for a month and almost got sent to "20/20" (juvenile detention).
I knew it was wrong to bring the knife. So I wasnt shocked when I got in trouble. But I wasnt trying to kill or harm anyone. They didnt have to try sending me to jail.
Oh well. I learned.
