I love this song. I hear it many times daily because at my work they play lots of oldies music and they play this often. It's a shame that most of the other employees do not like the oldies music that plays, it is so good!
Our group played with Gerry at the Bell hall Warrington, just after this release.

Gerry was absolutely BRILLIANT, first band we'ed seen with live keyboards, ie, a Reslo mike stuffed in the hall.s stage piano. The band had a superb live sound, as did The Big Three, , , Bob, of The Templars beat group ,Warrington.
Yes, it was a chris culleton,Pete rigby show, Hogeys RIp
Zayamsberry insists all the 60's songs were sexually charged like the Beatles' "Please please me." If they were sexually charged, they sure weren't graphic. "I want to hold your hand" sexually charged as well? "PS I love you?" You find one example of subtlety and try to make a case out of it?
Written by Lennon and McCartney, given graciously to Gerry for recording. Can't you hear The Beatles just singing this as you listen to Gerry's first American Hit?
Kurt Cobain, singer with Nirvana, said that "we are the last innocent generation", meaning children born in the 60's and 70's, without mobiles, internet porn, etc etc. You may think that the 60's was an innocent time, and it was. But later generations were innocent too. Not as much for those born after 1990 or so. It's a shame but it's the way the world is going. Thank your lucky stars some kids still have good parents and happy hearts filled with kindness. Peace and love to you all x
actually the beatles did a few takes of this, but wanted to do please please me instead. George Martin their producer gave how do you do it to Gerry. both became #1 in the UK
I really love Beatles! They're always the best, but I do think that Gerry & the Pacemakers do this better, or it maybe fits them better, I don't know…

@Polyphemus47 I would have LOVED to hear the Dave Clark Five version of this song. They did the ORIGINAL demo because they were working with the song writer. The Beatles listened to the DC5's version, but didn't like it.
@rocksinger45 Thats correct and they made it to No. 1 Before the Beatles made their first No. 1 with "From Me To You" but at anyrate for the Betales turning down "How Do Yoy Do It'' is most likely that they didn't care for the song and felt that it's right for them.
@CGAW, Thing is the groups from this era could really sing, had lyrics with life lessons to apply, and the music was enjoyable to listen to. Comparing it to what came after it be it angry/drug musicians, hard rock/heavy metal, disco, rap, etc... all were devoid of one or more aspects that this era had.
The feel good innocent times are gone along with the critical messages which deeply influenced me in my life dealings as a pre teen and on up.
This audience sucks! i would have been soooo happy to see that show! Gerry and the boys are rocking their hearts out to a bunch of bored unworthy ungrateful shits!
@RACINGBOY -Not quite-George Martin who produced both The Beatles and Gerry and the Pacemakers came up with this Mitch Murray composition and wanted the Beatles to record it-The Beatles were not at all enthused and did a slow half hearted version of the song so Martin gave it to Gerry and it became a number 1-The Beatles were interested in their own composition PLEASE PLEASE ME instead at the time which dislodged HOW DO YOU DO IT from the number 1 spot-
@BOZO32851 Per Wiki the song the Beatles insisted on was "Love Me Do". Nerveless they have a special place in my heart along with DC5, after being dragged to a drive-in movie of "Ferry Across the Mersey" and all the Elvis movies by my mother when I was 9. At the time I thought it was child abuse, I went on to Deep Purple and Sabbath. I guess the 60's were a gateway drug. The Kids are Alright I think. :)
one of my favorite 60s bands, lotsa talent here, their first album was quite good, included an amazing rendition of Summertime. GOOD STUFF, still makes me feel good. FRESH!! doesn't feel or sound like that long ago!
@haynet1962 ...I was but three years still to be born but I feel I know this music...such an innocent era....l can identify with what you say..its such heartrending music..brings nostalgic tears to one's eyes.
What great Junior High School 7th grade memories this song brings back in the mid 1960's. Innocent times, innocent superb music/lyrics, you see how respectful and well dressed the Gerry's band is as were almost all musicians of that era, and you just wonder where those times and music went. Does anyone honestly believe things have evolved for the better?
Have to admit I love hearing this music but can't help feeling a bit sad simultaneously. The innocent times were something we'll never get back as kids today grow up fast without the freedom we had. And these songs had innocent respectful messages which influenced us to be that way--and the nostalgia hearing the music of that era knowing it's gone is a shame.
@salemst I agree with you 100%..I play in a band (Novamenco).and what we play live is what we record.and listening to these 60s bands make me feel I do not belong on this planet any more. The only reguge I find left is in flamenco guitar music.
@salemst have to agree with you totally. The attitude was so different then. Watching the old programmes, like RSG, the musicians are happy to be there and they mingle with the audience. No massive minders surrounding them, protecting such 'precious' stars. I can even remember being just feet away from people like Jimi Hendrix, Pete Townshend etc when I used to see them performing at the Marquee club. Happy days.
@salemst . I get really nostalgic about this stuff. I'm 56 this year and I absolutely hate being this age. I want to be 11 again , when Ferry across the Mersey was released. I want to do ait all again. The days were free and innocent, seemed to last longer and were just happier. I loved the sixies and even the 70's. Sigh.
@cgaw14 Me Too! I'll be 56 on November 15. Wish I could go back to the 70's. Did not know it at that time, but life was fun and carefree- Peter from NJ
@salemst, there were people in those days who said the same thing. Every generation has its problems, you know. You were probably in your teens or early twenties when this was made, weren't you? I was in college in the 80s but I don't miss that era a bit. My friends tend to be nostalgic but I remind them what went on during that decade. I am 46 but I don't feel any different than I did at 26. Cheer up!
@Mufaso1000 I don't miss my college years in the early 70's. Don't miss my High School years of the late 60's. Don't miss the Disco years of the 70's or any more recent era. You had to grow up experiencing the 50's to the mid 60's to see the difference. It was like a 15 year lull between the storm of WW2 ending and the societal turmoil/Vietnam War cranking up where you were free to not worry about anything other than being a kid and growing up
@salemst I know what you mean.Wonderful time, I think when the Beatles broke up, I knew a wonderful musical time was leaving us. Greed, and technology took the soul away.
@salemst Innocent times? Rosy tinted colored glasses are in full effect here. Atrocities in Vietnam, a president assassinated and separate black/white water fountains still existed. The music was great, that's all, though.
@BilboShowProductions Mid 60's was about the time the innocent times came to an end. Music radically changed as well reflecting it. Love and innocence with music replaced by angry, political, and drug influenced music. Living in the surburbs, 13 (in 1965), family tv shows, innocent lyrics you could sing to, kids going to the park unsupervised to play, freedom of movement coming home in time for dinner, no violence, no drugs, good clean fun. It wasn't perfect, not times ever are.
@salemst In any time, in any place, at 13 years of age, you don't see the world clearly. The world seems less innocent now because you're older and you understand it better. Times are no different. Only thing that changes is tastes and trends. Also, in the 40s and 50s there was plenty of protest/political music through the 30-50s.
@BilboShowProductions What I did see are a group dessed in jacket and ties--most all groups were well dressed, the fans dressed and behaving appropriately, respectfulness, lyrics that meant something you could both understand and sing along to in public, and a melody easy to listen to. Those days are long gone. Did I see the world clearly? Perhaps not. But the world I saw was one that wasn't threatening.
Great upbeat song. I love all the chord changes. But except for a couple of girls the audience looks comatose ? Did they give them drugs at the door to keep them in check ?
Funny thing, the Beatles did their own arrangement of this song that was far removed from what was written. The Beatles own demo was submitted to Gerry and the Pacemakers to learn so Gerry is actually using the Beatles arrangement with a few minor changes.
No, they were offered this song, by the record company. But The Beatles didn't want it, they wanted a song that they had written on their own, so Brian Epstein gave the song to Gerry & the Pacemaker, another band he was managing, because he didn't want to spoil such a good song. and who wrote the song? Mitch Murray did (:
I was extremely lucky to meet Gerry before a show in Greeley, CO. What a wonderful person. He took the time to meet me and the wife (a brit) and signed 3 items...We were so thrilled with meeting him we forgot to get a photo with him...darn it...the concert was great...too shorties on stage...Gerry and Leslie Gore (shorter than me and I'm 5'3")...great music from two great musicians!!! I also love the Beatles version of this song...a bit slower but Gerry's version is the best....
7) The band can actually play their instruments, rather than relying on an array of computer effects and distortion, to mask / compensate for their lack of musical ability.
I love the 60s, and this is one of the best. People had far less then: no computers, no boat loads of trash from China, no global financial meltdown. I wish I could be transported back to these simpler times.
was written by Mitch Murray, Beatles recorded it, its on their Anthology, but they insisted on doing their own compositions(Please Please Me), so Gerry got this one! and the rest is History foir The Beatles and Gerry!!!
It's great to see Gerry & The Pacemakers perform live. I read it somewhere that those guys and beatles were managed by the same individual, Brian Epstein. In any event, they performed this song very well.
Originally written to be the beatles first hit and was forced on them soo lennon got presured and wrote please please me and this was dropped and given to these guys :D Type it in.. the beatles how do you do it :)
one of the girls in the video (from around .45 to .55) is GORGEOUS-the one in the front row with the bangs, who's singing along. Did anyone else notice!
No need to hate saying it!! Gerry did this mcuh better than the Beatles because he believed in it - you can hear his sincerity in everthing he does! This is one of the few real live versions of Gerry on film - not just miming to a track. Classic rare sixties.
This must have been from the Swedish TV show "Drop In", in which the Beatles dropped in during an Oct. 1963 episode. The floor markings at the end give it all away!
George Martin practically shoved this song down the Beatles' throats. The first three times they went into Abbey Road to record singles, he insisted this be the song. I'd say the situation worked out well for all involved.
What a fantasticly written song and well executed. Also, I thought Slim Jim took his stand up drumming technique from a Gene Vincent album cover. Mr Marsden's drumer is paying stood-up here. Mikey xx
Didn't Gerry and the Pacemakers have a no. 1 hit with this in England (after the Beatles turned it down)? I thought that I read that they did and that they had a no. 1 hit before the Beatles did.
This is REAL music :)

Love this song! I like it better when the Beatles sing it, but i guess that's just because I'm such a big fan... EVERYBODY, THIS IS ROCK ! <3 :'D

My favorite song of theirs. Just great.

Okay. You're right on both counts. I figured it out. "I'm Telling You Now" is the Freddie and the Dreamers song I had in mind.
motowngirl65 2 years ago
I could swear this was a Freddie and Dreamers hit - not Gary and the Pacemakers.
motowngirl65 2 years ago
And I could swear it's Gerry and the Pacemakers and not Gary lol

An example of what it means to perform music:
1) The song in this video contains a recognizable, hummable, rememberable melody.
2) There is harmony that fits with the melody.
3) The lyrics are audible, recognizable, and understandable.
4) The audience is sitting and listening to the music (melody+harmony+recognizable words).
5) The band is performing music (not strange gymnastics).
6) As civilized homo sapiens, the band members follow a custom of bowing at the end of the performance.
BenBarfuss 2 years ago 8
Could I also add:
7) The band can actually play their instruments, rather than relying on an array of computer effects and distortion, to mask / compensate for their lack of musical ability.

I remember listening to this on "the wireless" in me nan's kitchen on a sunday morning many years ago. It was playing on Radio Merseyside.

I love the 60s, and this is one of the best. People had far less then: no computers, no boat loads of trash from China, no global financial meltdown. I wish I could be transported back to these simpler times.

A song that puts me in a good mood all day. It is simply great!
Drwhofan1971 2 years ago 2
The fact that you're into extreme metal music and you like this song just proves that good songs can transcend genres!
Damo0886 2 years ago 3
was written by Mitch Murray, Beatles recorded it, its on their Anthology, but they insisted on doing their own compositions(Please Please Me), so Gerry got this one! and the rest is History foir The Beatles and Gerry!!!
dnic1513 2 years ago
did the beatles write this or did they reject singing it?? any answers x x

But why does the audience behave like zombies while they're watching a great band? strange.
stafylides 2 years ago 2
Scientists say that Zombies actually evolved into Humans somewhere between 1957 and 1963 AD.

A very sixties audience this one. It wasn't all screaming. You kept your cool.

It's great to see Gerry & The Pacemakers perform live. I read it somewhere that those guys and beatles were managed by the same individual, Brian Epstein. In any event, they performed this song very well.

one of the girls in the video (from around .45 to .55) is GORGEOUS-the one in the front row with the bangs, who's singing along. Did anyone else notice!
rbbgolfer 3 years ago 3
No need to hate saying it!! Gerry did this mcuh better than the Beatles because he believed in it - you can hear his sincerity in everthing he does! This is one of the few real live versions of Gerry on film - not just miming to a track. Classic rare sixties.
RedPantherMuso 3 years ago
I hate to say it, but this is better than the Beatles' version

This must have been from the Swedish TV show "Drop In", in which the Beatles dropped in during an Oct. 1963 episode. The floor markings at the end give it all away!

these girls had been ridden rotten by gerry and the band beforehand..thats why they looked bored...rock an roll man..!!!!
pmay222 3 years ago
George Martin practically shoved this song down the Beatles' throats. The first three times they went into Abbey Road to record singles, he insisted this be the song. I'd say the situation worked out well for all involved.
dwightfartschrute 3 years ago
this song was offered to the Beatles, but they denied it,so when it was offered to these guys they took it and got #1 on the charts!

Gerry and the Pacemakers didn't rile up the girls like The Beatles did...the one girl clapping looked bored.
