This is the sauciest TV show theme song of all time. It harkens back to a time when people smoked in elevators, men wore smoking jackets and apparently *everyone* kept unregistered gun(s) in the unlocked glove box in their convertible. That and they *all* have motive, see. Especially the brunette.
I like the opening with him sitting alone in the courtroom better, with the dramatic dolly shot up to him and then back. That's the one I remember. Visually, it seems to go much better with the theme song.
i am 43 been watching perry in rerun form since i was about 5. i think i have seen them all at least 2x, great line of stars and future ones appeared on here, also love all the cool cars that are shown... all around timeless classic.....
... for those of you musing forever with the Perry Mason theme, it becomes incumbent upon me to provide you with some interesting trivia: composed by Fred Steiner, its original title is "PARK AVENUE BEAT".
Yup. The version of the theme used in the first season was recorded in Mexico. (Back then, networks often used music recorded overseas, or library music - it was cheaper.)
The first season had 39 episodes; all but two were based on Erle Stanley Gardner's original Perry Mason mystery novels.
Love this show! It was my Grandmother's favorite. It wasn't on when I was a kid, but I now live in Chicago and get the wonderful channel MeTV and they play it. I DVR it every day.
The BEST law/drama show ever! The opening theme is a timeless classic that everybody recognizes. I read the books and still love watching the shows whenever I can...thanks for the great post!
This has always been my favorite version of the theme, with the subtly out-of-tune" piano and the drum percussion beat. Starting with Season #2, the percussion was dropped and the theme became rather dull. This version was brought back for the series' last season in 1966.

Raymond Burr talked like he had trouble breathing. Does anyone know if he smoked? It especially got worse as he later played Ironside.
