You are stupid the 6.5 is not a duramax not even remotely close to being one it's a detroit always has been always will be look it up know your facts before you talk and if you aren't sure ask a diesel mechanic like me
@MXJohnHMX1 get your shit straight duramax was the successor to the detroit diesels provided for chevy and gmc, they started out as the 6.2 IDI diesel, then they turbo'd the 6.2 for about 2 years when they had the 6.5's out available mostly in turbos but offered N/A as well, duramax didn't make an appearance until 2001 and it was 6.6L, just shy of 403 CID, do some research first

hey my 6.5l is great i out pulled a 7.3l with no problem and i hauled a cummins dually and my truck didnt have ne troubles and could still get to 60 pretty quick and all its got is a turbo upgrade, pump turned up, and stacks
A Duramax, late model 5.9, or late model 7.3. All of my OBS chevys were 7.4L gassers because they pull better than the 6.5 and less trouble. Now I have 2 Duramax and a 6.0 Vortec all 2500HD's. they all work good, but the 6.0 is up for replacement soon.
@crazywarriorman I'm not sure exactly, probably 12/14 avg. My Duramax averages about 17-18 unloaded, lots of stop n go, cold starts, etc. The diesel's shine underload.
@schrankm Amen. I blew up two 6.2Ls. The first one blew pulling out of the driveway at a breakneck speed of 5 mph while carrying a bag of sand in the bed. The other blew up doing 50 on the highway carrying nothing but myself. True workhorses, they are.
lol, 6.5 is such a good motor.....oh well, but you know how you really kill one of these, tear up the turbo oil seal, and overfill it with oil, itss run on its own crank oil till it lets a rod go

6.5. diesel is crap compared to other diesels.. However, it's still better than a gas engine when you work the shit out of it.. 6.5. diesel has good power.. @natep246 They where built out of Detroit Diesel Division of General Motors smart ass they put them in there trucks knowingly that they were pieces of shit just to get in the diesel market enough said shit head
@2003m36sp The 6.5 motor's were actually very good motor's. They were not the most powerful diesel's, but they were tough, dependable and have been know to last many miles. Why the us army still uses them in there humvee's. The 6.5's are still used in boat's as wel..
@CSXtrackworker The army does still use them getting like 3mpg (great one guys but they do look sick) but they may be the same motor but they are setup differently the gearing is different they are slow on the high way they don't go faster then 65 thus creating less heat which means they last longer but they still have the same issue.
@2003m36sp Yeah, I knew they were set up differently. With a few mod's, such as marine injector's, relocateing the pmd and a few other's they can be reliable motor's. We had a few at work that topped 300,000 and were still going strong when they traded em in on new truck's. I friend of mine has 333,000 on his 6.5 and it still run's very decent.
@CSXtrackworker i have two of them sitting in my back yard like lawn ornaments with about 110k on one with no engine about 155k on the other she needs work and a lot of time such as fuel injectors as well as a cracked block and heads the one with 155k i got new and always had problems with so i bought the older one for parts but got tired of trying to keep her running they were beat but so were the fords we own and there still running one a 6.9 diesel and the other a 7.3 diesel
@2003m36sp Well, I can't speak for all the 6.5's. Sound's like you had the shit end of the stick with your's. All I can say is that the one's we ran at work and my friend's, performed well. The 6.9& the 7.3 are good motor's. I see alot of guy's putting turbo's on their 6.9's now and some other mod's& really makeing them perform. They are not the most powerful diesel's, but they still do today what they were designed for.
@qwertyz6789 the 6.5 is a bored and stroked 6.2 with a turbo, lower compression and upgraded internals. they use the same block castings. the problem with the 94-96 6.5s was the Electronic PMD was prone to overheating and failure. the 92-93 and 97-current 6.5s are great engines, in fact, the 6.5 is whats used in Military Humvees
@ColtCobra2002 alright before you get all excited about the 6.5 diesel engine, the military usage for the 6.5 is called the OPTIMIZER. Which if you'd do some research you'd find that the optimizer has stronger crankshafts and better cooling and injectors. That's why the 6.5 is viewed highly by some, and this is the best 6.5 engine made, but it cost 3-4K more than a stock. That money could be put towards any engine of your liking. Your resulting options: Bad Ass Cummins, PSD, or Dmax but not 6.5
@qwertyz6789 this may be true, but I can take a 6.2 or 6.5 and fill it up and when a D-Max, PSD or Cummins is at the station buying $3.00+ a gallon diesel, I'll still be ticking right along,
my company truck is a 93 C2500HD with the 6.5 and 210K on the factory motor and Injector Pump, altho it is on its 3rd 4L80 and it averages 21 on the road, and thats grumbling along at 85mph
@DanEdwardsMusic we've used it to pull our Dresser 515B Front End Loader since it was new. Its done the job well enough for 17 years, what more can you ask for?
@CSXtrackworker compared to the diesels today. look at the advances in technology. these are still Indirect injection if im not mistaken. so of course to todays diesels they seem 'gutless'
@mrtaterman These truck's never seemed gutless to me. I have driven the truck's that had these motor's in em at my job and I love them. People give these motor's a bad rap and with a few changes these are dependable, and with some mod's you can boost there torque& hp. I like em for what they are.
@CSXtrackworker they seem gutless to todays diesels, cuz that is what they are comparing them to. of course when u compare them to 400hp 800ftlbs powerstroke it will seem gutless in comparison. but they are not gutless.
@mrtaterman You got that right my friend! Why I refuse to get a diesel. Will only buy vortec power'd silverado's. All I buy. Everybodyhas a diesel now and juiced up to the max. If I were to buy a diesel, it would be the old 6.5 turbo! To me that are great diesel's. They lasted us for over 10 years at work, and many were retired with over 350,000 on em.
@CSXtrackworker diesels are sweet dont get my wrong, but now a days these teenagers use them to look cool. my vortec 350 in my gmc sierra is all i need. and i would rather have a big block than a diesel. the obs chevy/gmc trucks are the best looking year(s) in my opinon.
@mrtaterman You have got that right about the teen's& the diesel's. Everybody has them now, which is another reason why I wont buy them. I would much rather have my 5.3 v-8 over a diesel, unless it was an old 6.5 diesel. This truck does what I ask it to, perform's well and so forth. Couldn't ask for a better truck!
Should have sold it to the military. The sales add could have been " The new military Chevy diesel, comes with front mounted smoke screen and noise confusion system, when the enemy thinks your truck is broke, it is but the smoke alows you to get away " For Sale 1.35 billion each
My mom's 6.2L Diesel has 450,000km on it with no motor work ever done to it and still gets 23mpg..can a powerstroke guy or newer diesel owner say that?? I highly doubt it, and the '93 6.5L got me 28mpg constant and never had any problems so really, they're not a bad built motor, it just depends how ya run them
@KB3MMX detriots are one of the most common engines found in semi's why? because there one of the most bullet proof diesels ever produced along with cummins.. your a douche bag you dont know shit... i bet you dont even know how a motor even works yet alone a diesel motor fag
You must be some young smart ass because apparently you are clueless. The 6.5 and 6.2 motors have NO similarity to a 6 cylinder online 60 series, if you even knew what a 60 series is anyway. You have a lot to learn before you open your mouth and put your foot right in it.
WHAT A BUNCH OF MORONS!!!!!!! AND YOU ARE GOING TO CLASS FOR THIS????? WELL ITS NO WONDER WHY THIS COUNTRY IS GOING IN THE TOILET. THANKS FOR SHOWING HOW STUPID YOU ARE!!!!!
@Hotrodx199 Right on, and it won't take very long. Blow one of those wimpy gas engine type connecting rods or junk pistons right out of the block, lol .....if the block doesn't crack first as they notoriously do...
At my school we have a 95 Lumina with 68 miles on it, it was donated to us brand new from the factory for the same reason, since now were tired of it and it keeps getting in the way and we're not aloud to sell it, thanks to me it has now been turned into a demolition derby car and then we'll scrap it after. It's gotta be the most mint condition derby car ever!
you know what would've been a quicker and easier way to blow it up? turn the fuel rack all the way up and let er run away.....I bet there would've been parts all over the place then...
you couldve sold off the parts....theres always a market for spares....then crush the shell etc...cars are worth more dead than alive...in bits rather than whole...
we couldnt sell the parts because it was giving to us by the truck dealer ship, and it was a truck that didnt meet the standerds to sell on the lot, so he ethier had to donate it to a school or crush it, so thats why we blowed up the motor, other wise im sure the parts woulda been sold if he could have
@dieselclass Yeah when I was in votec we had to destroy everything that was gave to us...When I graduated we cut up 3 cars none of them had more the 50 miles on them and that was just going in and out of the doors lol.
To me that actually seems pretty damn good considering you drained the oil out of it and it still ran for a little over 2 minutes at a high RPM.Try that with a Stroke.
screw you gear head i have a 1993 gmc dually with the 6.5 in it and it has 357 thousand on the original motor n tranny still going stron so go stroke of a ford you piece of shit
Your so fuckin full of shit kid. they were junk engines. Everyone knows that, Ask an GOOD Mechanic. See their response. They were gutless , weak hunks of scrap. period. Retire that heap, everyone is laughing at you! :D

CSXtrackworker 1 year ago
@CSXtrackworker i have two of them sitting in my back yard like lawn ornaments with about 110k on one with no engine about 155k on the other she needs work and a lot of time such as fuel injectors as well as a cracked block and heads the one with 155k i got new and always had problems with so i bought the older one for parts but got tired of trying to keep her running they were beat but so were the fords we own and there still running one a 6.9 diesel and the other a 7.3 diesel
2003m36sp 1 year ago
@2003m36sp Well, I can't speak for all the 6.5's. Sound's like you had the shit end of the stick with your's. All I can say is that the one's we ran at work and my friend's, performed well. The 6.9& the 7.3 are good motor's. I see alot of guy's putting turbo's on their 6.9's now and some other mod's& really makeing them perform. They are not the most powerful diesel's, but they still do today what they were designed for.

@CSXtrackworker my friend has a chevy with the 6.2 and it has 500,000 miles and its still going
tanksor 1 year ago
@tanksor the 6.2 diesel is way more reliable than the 6.5 (POS) however, neither where made for towing, but the 6.2 is a great engine

@tanksor the 6.2 diesel is way more reliable than the 6.5 (POS) however, neither where made for towing, but the 6.2 is a great engine
qwertyz6789 1 year ago
@qwertyz6789 the 6.5 is a bored and stroked 6.2 with a turbo, lower compression and upgraded internals. they use the same block castings. the problem with the 94-96 6.5s was the Electronic PMD was prone to overheating and failure. the 92-93 and 97-current 6.5s are great engines, in fact, the 6.5 is whats used in Military Humvees
ColtCobra2002 1 year ago 2
@ColtCobra2002 alright before you get all excited about the 6.5 diesel engine, the military usage for the 6.5 is called the OPTIMIZER. Which if you'd do some research you'd find that the optimizer has stronger crankshafts and better cooling and injectors. That's why the 6.5 is viewed highly by some, and this is the best 6.5 engine made, but it cost 3-4K more than a stock. That money could be put towards any engine of your liking. Your resulting options: Bad Ass Cummins, PSD, or Dmax but not 6.5
qwertyz6789 1 year ago
@qwertyz6789 this may be true, but I can take a 6.2 or 6.5 and fill it up and when a D-Max, PSD or Cummins is at the station buying $3.00+ a gallon diesel, I'll still be ticking right along,
my company truck is a 93 C2500HD with the 6.5 and 210K on the factory motor and Injector Pump, altho it is on its 3rd 4L80 and it averages 21 on the road, and thats grumbling along at 85mph

@ColtCobra2002 and it can't pull shit...

@DanEdwardsMusic we've used it to pull our Dresser 515B Front End Loader since it was new. Its done the job well enough for 17 years, what more can you ask for?

@CSXtrackworker compared to the diesels today. look at the advances in technology. these are still Indirect injection if im not mistaken. so of course to todays diesels they seem 'gutless'
mrtaterman 1 year ago
@mrtaterman These truck's never seemed gutless to me. I have driven the truck's that had these motor's in em at my job and I love them. People give these motor's a bad rap and with a few changes these are dependable, and with some mod's you can boost there torque& hp. I like em for what they are.
CSXtrackworker 1 year ago
@CSXtrackworker they seem gutless to todays diesels, cuz that is what they are comparing them to. of course when u compare them to 400hp 800ftlbs powerstroke it will seem gutless in comparison. but they are not gutless.
mrtaterman 1 year ago
@mrtaterman You got that right my friend! Why I refuse to get a diesel. Will only buy vortec power'd silverado's. All I buy. Everybodyhas a diesel now and juiced up to the max. If I were to buy a diesel, it would be the old 6.5 turbo! To me that are great diesel's. They lasted us for over 10 years at work, and many were retired with over 350,000 on em.
CSXtrackworker 1 year ago
@CSXtrackworker diesels are sweet dont get my wrong, but now a days these teenagers use them to look cool. my vortec 350 in my gmc sierra is all i need. and i would rather have a big block than a diesel. the obs chevy/gmc trucks are the best looking year(s) in my opinon.
mrtaterman 1 year ago
@mrtaterman You have got that right about the teen's& the diesel's. Everybody has them now, which is another reason why I wont buy them. I would much rather have my 5.3 v-8 over a diesel, unless it was an old 6.5 diesel. This truck does what I ask it to, perform's well and so forth. Couldn't ask for a better truck!

@2003m36sp what about the 6.6
kinghowie8 1 year ago
@kinghowie8 it's had it's share of problems
2003m36sp 1 year ago
Should have sold it to the military. The sales add could have been " The new military Chevy diesel, comes with front mounted smoke screen and noise confusion system, when the enemy thinks your truck is broke, it is but the smoke alows you to get away " For Sale 1.35 billion each

My mom's 6.2L Diesel has 450,000km on it with no motor work ever done to it and still gets 23mpg..can a powerstroke guy or newer diesel owner say that?? I highly doubt it, and the '93 6.5L got me 28mpg constant and never had any problems so really, they're not a bad built motor, it just depends how ya run them
farmrboi134 1 year ago
@farmrboi134
450,000km is barely over 250,000mi.....wow.

I'd love to blow up a 6.5 like this, just for fun, seeing the wimpy parts fly out of this terribly designed diesel engine!
KB3MMX 1 year ago
@KB3MMX detriots are one of the most common engines found in semi's why? because there one of the most bullet proof diesels ever produced along with cummins.. your a douche bag you dont know shit... i bet you dont even know how a motor even works yet alone a diesel motor fag

@natep246
You must be some young smart ass because apparently you are clueless. The 6.5 and 6.2 motors have NO similarity to a 6 cylinder online 60 series, if you even knew what a 60 series is anyway. You have a lot to learn before you open your mouth and put your foot right in it.

Plug the wastegate and give it fuel, make it push 25 psi of boost, it will blow up i promise.
Hotrodx199 1 year ago
@Hotrodx199 Right on, and it won't take very long. Blow one of those wimpy gas engine type connecting rods or junk pistons right out of the block, lol .....if the block doesn't crack first as they notoriously do...

why?

what a waste of a good engine at least we know its better than a power smoke those dont even last 2 seconds wide open

It's gotta be the most mint condition derby car ever!
abbott242 1 year ago
no back in 1993 was the good year for the 6.5 those truck went and lasted a long time. we have one at work with 575k miles on it and no promblems.

In my diesel class we have a spare 6.5 we are going to blow up too!
psychotikpaisano 1 year ago
btw for a faster way to blow-it. drain the oil, let the engine heat-up, pour salt in the crank-case then add water. should seize in seconds.
abram7117 2 years ago
6.5s were garbage engines anyway. must of been fun.
abram7117 2 years ago
you know what would've been a quicker and easier way to blow it up? turn the fuel rack all the way up and let er run away.....I bet there would've been parts all over the place then...
DieselMechanic09 2 years ago
you couldve sold off the parts....theres always a market for spares....then crush the shell etc...cars are worth more dead than alive...in bits rather than whole...
turtlezed 2 years ago
we couldnt sell the parts because it was giving to us by the truck dealer ship, and it was a truck that didnt meet the standerds to sell on the lot, so he ethier had to donate it to a school or crush it, so thats why we blowed up the motor, other wise im sure the parts woulda been sold if he could have
dieselclass 2 years ago
my school does that too, but we dont blow em up, we work on em
we got 2 new musstangs
but im mean similar by either donated then when done they need to b crushed
mifan93 2 years ago
@dieselclass Yeah when I was in votec we had to destroy everything that was gave to us...When I graduated we cut up 3 cars none of them had more the 50 miles on them and that was just going in and out of the doors lol.
dirtracer81 1 year ago
@turtlezed when gm donates a car the school is not allowed to use any parts from it on a vehicle that is going to be used on the road
the whole vehicle is condemmed even if there is nothing wrong with it
the school has to sign a waver

that was cool

To me that actually seems pretty damn good considering you drained the oil out of it and it still ran for a little over 2 minutes at a high RPM.Try that with a Stroke.
yoter10 2 years ago
yeah a 6 Liter powerstroker would last 15 seconds...haha
GearHead156 2 years ago
@GearHead156 6 liter powerstroke HEUI would quit running once the oil was gone...unfortunately

yep, we got bored in our diesel class over at the college, so we drained the oil and held it to the ground and let it go
