Got a Meteor in my cellar. Must dust it down and pimp it up! Gotta love the simplicity of the thing. Ok stock shocks were rubbash but I recall the whole kit was only £50 at a time when Kyosho and Tamiya were charging hundreds for their offerings. Bring back theh Meteor!!
i used to race one of these before upgrading to the cobra
after i stopped racing it i fitted a 12x2 trinity horsepower modified motor along with a 8.4v ni cad with an 18t pinion gear was silly fast everything had to be ballraced but i still remember going the little red cogs and the electric speed controller took a battering (had to have it repaired twice) think i got about 45mph out of her and yes with good tyres would easily wheelie all up the road sometimes flipping it over
That scream noise is your differential. The more power you put through the gearbox, the tighter the diff needs to be. I have a meteor with a 14.4 volt drill battery and motor (tends to chomp through speed controlers, I ended up using a aeroplane speedo with no reverse) - it goes like stink and weighs a ton. The diff is almost as tight as it will go!! (still works tho)
I had a Meteor as my 1st RC car. A really robust Uk made RC car unlike japanese offerings. I would imagine with more power it would strip the plastic gear driven off the motor pinion. I see it has no fr bumper either, which means the front wishbones will take the full force of an impact. I wish I still had mine!!
Thats exactly what I did to my Meteor running a brushless system with a nimh 7.v battery, meteorically fast ;) but killed the plastic spur gear and melted spur cover. Fun whilst it lasted.
Old rc cars are so pretty! This, the Associated RC10, various Tamiya buggies...Mr. Wonderfulcat, I must say your Meteor goes rather better than my attempt at a Mardave Stockmaster electric conversion, which trundles around sedately, bouncing on its crap suspension (Mardave front, Tamiya rear) and whirring to itself. Too heavy for a Mabuchi 540, I fear...
Haha I fitted extra cells in a Mardave stockcar once with completely standard everything and it went like an absolute dingdong! Bulletproof too. Btw top marks for your son pretending he couldn't see past the Mondeo whilst he filmed the chics on the pavement
i drice rc cars and to say that you made it go faster thats a bunch of bull shit it was faster when it was new drilling hols and makeing it lighter makes it weeker so what all you did was put a biger vold batery on it it wont last long and it has no power.
do you evan no how they work its a peace of junt with no power get a reel bugy
As a veteran RC electric 10th buggy enthusiast of over 20 years I can tell you that the Mardave Meteor was a real good piece of kit and that one, stripped gears or not can clearly go quicker now that it ever did. Imagine what that would do with a vintage parma motor. Class car mate and pleased it is still being used.
My son and I had a lot of fun with it on holiday at Hemsby this year. He has a Tamaya Baja Champ and I the Mardave. I've fitted the mardave with a mtronics speedo and run it on Ni Cads and it's just as quick as the baja champ which has a team orion motor and schumacher speedo. My next step is to put a brushless motor and speedo in it with the 11.4v lipo to see what ot will do!
i have 1984 mini mardave and it is still going strong it sat in the shed for 12 years i love the old 1980s car they go well last for ever i was thinking of doing this i have 1800 li poly battry for my honey bee king 2 will this work i have the 540 motor in it do i have to do eney thing to it to fit the battery thanks. nice vid keep up the good work
I used to race a 15x2 and a 12x1 in mine that went obout as well as yours, and i was the top 2wd car in the club in 1990, beating rc10's and cougars etc.
I have a plan to fit a Mtroniks gennisis speed controller and a brushless motor to it. I think I'll have to sort out the diff beforehand though (thanks for the tip). My son has a Tamaya 4wheel drive buggy, so we'l have a bit of a race with those.
Mind you I've just moved house and there's a lot of DIY to do. Not sure if she who must be obeyed will be very pleased with me playing with rc cars.
nice car an it would not go on fire it will not burn out the motor i have rc car an it has 17 nokia phone batteries in it u should see that go i charge them with an old nokia 3310 an i had to use the back of 17 nokia 3310 phones all in it cost £200 but worth every penny it hits 35 mph i race it with my mates petrol rc car
I used to race one of those 20 years ago. It was a good club racer but the beauty about the meteor is it had plenty of scope for home modification. fitting a full ballrace set to wheels gearbox and steering posts. Fitting Kyosho shocks to give better adjustability. I made a rear shock mounting plate etc.and we bushed the plastic suspension arms and uprights with brass tubing. Won many 2wd trophies. Great car that you could keep running on pocket money. Nice to see one still kicking about!!
if you want a real difference in speed try replacing all of the bearings with ball raced. its the most efficient upgrade if you have a modified motor.
I just got it out of the parcel from a seller on ebay, matched it up with an old controller of mine and stuck a nicad in and it went, not bad for 20 quid! I then stuck the lipo in and it also went. I've now fitted an electronic esc and faster motor.
Not bad for 20 quid mate! A mate of mine aparrently got a TT01 off ebay for £5, so i'm going to try and find something cheap to stick my mamba max in it for a laugh
Where can you buy that Lipo battery?

I dont think something that old would have a slipper . It sounds like the wheels are spinning inside the tires.
Great Vid. Great way to revive a vintage RC..
