This is just a funny video! What's the massive need for countries to compete with each other (although obviously to be born British is to be born lucky.)
Lol have you seen the mess our country is in recently, Its only going to get worse btw. Goodbye empire hello 3rd world poverty. Dont listen to the government , they dont want to panic you about how fcked we are.
@polomonkey68 Well, I can't stand the food, and when I went to London, the air was so dry I got chapped lips and rough, hardened skin on my face. The architecture and museums were great though. So was Lego-Land.
@WasLilChrisnowbigish Dry air comes from being positioned inland; if you go to a coastal city you won't have that problem. I lived in Israel for 11 years on the coast, and never had chapped lips there. Even when I went to the dead sea, Jerusalem, and parts of the desert in the South, I didn't get chapped lips. My fist time was in London.
Might have missed your point here, but you say "What's the massive need for countries to compete with each other", then elevate England above the rest of the UK. Seems quite contradictory, hope it's ironic.
@polomonkey68 Nah, being from elsewhere in the UK gives you the pleasure of calling yourself British whilst denying that you are English. It's win-win.
@polomonkey68 I don't want to be British. I feel lucky to have drinking water, and go to school and university but not everyone in Britain is lucky. There is a huge divide between the rich and the poor and the government does not provide the services the poorer areas need. There is no opportunity to young people and we are constantly exposed to gang culture/violence/drugs/people trafficking. Your comment was two years ago, search London riots and see what Britain has become. Our youth is lost.
@ShamanSound I agree the British youth is lost. I've been living and working in the Philippines for two years and guess what? Brits have life pretty easy compared to most out here. The kids especially. They just think they have it hard because the British culture is all about expecting somebody else to come and make your life better for you instead of doing it for yourself. And I'm as guilty as the next man, by the way :)
@polomonkey68 But i would say the one thing that i can cherish about being British is our dry humour and dark comedy. Also programs like 'Monkey Dust', 'Ideal', but my favourite has to be 'Peep Show'. I have watched it with international friends who speak English fluently and find some of it funny but the moments that i find the funniest go completely over their heads and they ask me why it was funny. I can never explain, you just have to be British, to think like a Brit.
everyone just shup up about freakin language or w/e and watch the bloody video.god stop confusing me with long words and scary paragaphs its insulting to people like me with dislexiaa everywre
i always wanted to know why americans have different dialects. like saying airplane instead of aeroplane.from a british perspactive it looks like they are dumbing down the language to suit their needs but why does this happen. some things are just said differently but when they do something like rename a british sport because they call an american sport which is meerely an adaptation of another british sport it gets really annoying. is there a reason for this or is it just cultural differeces?
Even as early as the American revolution, there were differences. First of all, we didn't want to be British anymore. We didn't want to talk like you, have your form of government, or drink your tea. This still happens in America with the north/south thing.
Secondly, all throughout our history we've had many different contributing accents. Get enough people with enough different accents, and suddenly the people will stop conforming to the language, instead changing the language to suit them.
There's one other reason, and that is that generally speaking, most Americans are against anything that seems pretentiously high-class. Ask most Americans what they think of British accents and, unless they answer "sexy", they'll probably answer "snobby". (Well, at least in Texas).
These people have not only never been out of the country, but they've also never seen the movie "My Fair Lady".
I happen to have a rather intelligent Texan friend who knows things about British culture that I don't. Judging people on state/national stereotypes is something I despise no matter how proud I am to be British. Some of the smartest people I know are from Southern US states.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
That's the thing about "british accents" they are all really LONDON accents (unless they are a cockney one) if I put my mind to it I could probably think of about ten different accents in England alone and up here in Scotland accents change from city to city (or even towns). Plus, there are about five major langages native to the british isles that are still in use today.
@echolalia0 lol i hate it when people say british accents are snobby. What about scouse accents or brummie accents(which I have) or cockney accents and numerous others, none of them are exactly snobby lol, alot of people even (ignorantly) associate them with commonness.
And as for this whole British/American thing, can't people just get over it, does it matter.?
@Dannii2oo7 I'd like to clarify here, I don't think British accents sound "snobby" at all. I think they're awesome. I was just illustrating the typical (southern) American feeling on the issue, which I would know about, since I fucking live in Texas, and know what many of my peers think like, esp. those on the conservative side.
I don't even remember which comment I was initially responding to...this was some time ago, you know?
I weren't suggesting you thought they were, I actually got the impression you disagreed with this notion.
I was in fact just agreeing with the fact that it was annoying and stupid how people decide that all British accents are snobby (or cockney).
And it I know it was a long time ago lol, i jsut sometimes get bored and read ALL the comments, tbh i didn't think you'd actually pay attention to my response.
I'm an American. Just so you don't think I'm slagging off Americans. We're a very stubborn nation, and as we are mostly a combination of other nations we have been eager to assert ourselves as something other than the sum of our parts. While at the same time, I'm sure you'll find, we also like to state that we are 'Italian' or 'Irish' or 'Brazilian' and such. I suppose we change the language in an attempt to assert our difference. The dialects occur because we are a large country than England.
Why is it only ever the Americans who post stupid comments on videos to insult people or voice their useless opinions.
Oh and the reason the language is called English is because it was made by the fucking English FOR the English. So the correct way of spelling ENGLISH words would be to spell them in the way ENGLISH people use. American English is just a mutated version of English for simpletons.
to say that American English is a mutated version of English is not only ridiculous and immature, but also incorrect.
What does it matter how colour is spelt? It is exactly the same word, and it has exactly the same meaning. Perhaps you'd also like to know that in several cases, American English is actually closer to 'proper' English than us British speak today. For example, the word 'Fall' is not a mutilated version of 'Autumn', but is infact the older English word.
It's true, "fall" was used in Shakespearean times, like "gotten" for example. The reason American English is different from the British version is that Europeans settled in America 400+ years ago and the languages developed differently on the two sides of the Atlantic. Also, 400 years ago English spelling was not standardised and you could pretty much spell things however you liked
Also, would you say that the Geordie dialect is a mutated version of English? If you do, that's possibly even worse, because surely we have come to a state of society that can accept different accents and dialects.
Perhaps you ought to consider your childish views before you post them- not only are they ill-informed but they are also offensive. I don't speak perfect English, and I'm sure neither do you.
Just my standard response for whenever someone mentions that particular pointless affectation, no need to be offended. I really could care less about this sort of thing. Also I'm pretty sure spaced or unspaced is acceptable (though by my own admission my Grammar isn't perfect just generally intelligible I'm sorry if it's not up to the standard of a member of the Grammar Stasi).
