I think that "yuan lai" literally means "first come." So in actuality it roughly means: this is how it was in the first place-being something that took place already, already came.
This "yuan lai" is a phrase that can be used in allot of instances;for exapmple, "nin shi yuanlai de tongxue ma?" "are you a newcomer to our class?" or "ni zai yuanlai de xuexiao yongde shi shenme keben?" "In the first school that you went to, what is the textbook that you used?"
