Least favorite? Not even close. There are many third-season Star Trek episodes that are far less entertaining than this one, and at least a couple of them are more offensive.
Currently watching it on netflix. There really is nothing that makes this episode any more ridiculous than any of the other episodes. The "From a Mirror Darkly" episodes from Star Trek Enterprise is still easily the worst Star Treks that I've seen so far. But give it time, I haven't seen the animated series yet.
This episode seems to be a metaphor for marriage. On the surface the males are free to come and go as they please, but food and staying warm is probably a problem. The females trap the men by offering food, then take them down below to where food, warmth, and sex is abundant. The men are confined and controlled however. I suppose it's a question of what kind of pain is a male willing to endure?
You got my favorite line ("Brain and brain! What is brain?!") but missed a couple of runners up: "You are not Imorg, you are not Morg" and "The givers of pain and delight".
A funny episode, for sure....but it WAS entertaining. I could think of several episodes worse than this. One in particular was the one where Kirk energized into a life-size mockup of the Enterprise located on a hopelessly over-populated planet. The best part of that otherwise-horrible episode was the pretty lady gliding around on the decks of the phantom Enterprise.
Everyone's LEAST favorite episode? This has been one of my favorites ever since I was a kid. It's stupid, but it's hilarious! I'd rather watch this one over and over than one of the more serious, boring episodes of the later series.
Maybe I'm in the extreme minority, but I'm not one of those people who hates "Spock's Brain." I was very interested in neuroscience in those days and I remember experiments done on people undergoing brain surgery. Nowadays some patients (like my mother) are asked to participate in their own brain surgery, which of course, Spock must do.
That the episode was BADLY done is unquestionable. The idiotic dominatrix theme had me rolling on the floor with laughter, but not at the expense of Mr. Nimoy.
I sincerely doubt that 40 years from now in year 2050 anyone will watch startrek#11 the afterbirth...but I bet you they will be watching apollo era star trek tos and spock's brain!
when I was a little boy in the 1970s I thought all women of the future like in the 21st century ...would be beautiful and sexy like the "givers-of-pain-and-delight" of sigma draconis six!
there's nothing wrong with having a race of cloned beautiful women in mini-skirts and go-go boots!...they command many plejaren flying saucers over earth ...just like semjase!
startrek-tos episode spocks brain 1969 is 40 years older than the dogcrap 2009 remake startrek #11 the afterbirth...the science fiction themes and concepts are 100 times far more accurate and deeper!...spock's brain is a masterpiece of genius compared to startrek#11 the afterbirth! / milwaukee
Thanks for this! I wanted to watch the eppy, but I didn't think I'd have the patience for it, after all the bad reviews... XP This has certainly quenched my thirst!
I seem to remember a line before your first scene where they discover Spock. Kirk says to McCoy "Is he dead?" and McCoy replies "It's worse than that Jim, his BRAIN's gone!" ... possibly my favourite Star Trek quote EVER!
There are those who think "And the Children Shall Lead" is an even worse episode than this one. At least "Spock's Brain" has the redeeming quality of being unintentionally funny.
I couldn't decide whether to laugh or be disgusted when I first saw this episode. Then it came down to the remote controlled Spock. At that point, I laughed so hard I almost injured myself.
Actress Marj Dusay the actress who plays the alien woman that steals Spock's brain & also utters the ultimate in hillarous "Star Trek" sayings, "Brain and brain! What is brain?!" has used her performance to make points about what she finds disgusting around her career -- such as horrible writers, terrible constraints producers & directors put on some actors, etc. (Dusay's last known performance was on daytime's "Guiding Light" as Alexandra Spaulding).
Being a fan of the 1950s Sci-Fi genre, and b-movies in particular, I'm fairly convinced that this episode is a parody of the kind of logic that was used in those movies... an homage to the sci-fi genre as a whole. The slapstick ending clearly demonstrates that the episode was indeed meant to be humorous. They had almost no budget in the 3rd season (just look at The Empath- almost no set at all, and just a few cast members), and I think they were just trying to humor themselves at this point.
Actually I read that Spock's Brain was MEANT to be humorous but the 3rd season producer (Fred Freiberger--(whom IMO ruined every show he worked on-Space 1999, six million dollar man) --decided that they should do it seriously instead of comedic like Shore Leave.
I don't understand what happened with this episode. The first 2 series weren't perfect, but this episode just seemed like a parody of itself. Suddenly the acting felt awkward and the script laboured. The characters seemed like they had become their own stereotypes too. Sorry if I'm ranting, but it confused me to see what seems to be such a major change in quality from the 2nd to the 3rd series. I'm fairly new to trek (Where have I been, right?) and I wondered- the 3rd series gets better, right?
It looks like a new drinking game could be created off of this episode. The only problem is that anyone participating in the game might die from alcohol poisoning.
If you read Shatner's book, Star Trek Memories, the entire cast thought that with an episode like this one to begin the 3rd season, Star Trek was doomed to cancelation.
