  • Ferry's been performng in TUX's with bow ties since the early roxy days. Indeed, only he could pull that off amidst his bandmates glam mishmash including Phil Manzanera's K-SCOPE spectacles, Andy Mackays' green puffy spacesuit leotard, Paul Thompson's Tarzan attire, and the 'at the time' very flamboyant Brian Eno in full blue dyed ostrich feather w/sequins costume. Truly as bizzare a mix as you'll ever find. But, the music ages well.

  • To my Avalon of the 80s, I still miss you all so often, hope you are well.

  • is that a bird at the end or a bird?

What is the line after bossa nova?

  • niet slecht

  • Dancin! Dancin!! fucking beautiful song

  • just truly beautiful music meant for a lady and man to listen to

  • I reckon you've got to have cloth ears and no soul , not to be transported by this masterpiece!

  • best singer ever i love roxy music!!!!!

  • This song is timeless. Bryan has a new Cd out. Going to run out and By it !!

  • Man oh man!

  • Dear gawds, that dress is hideous. It looks like something made for a Barbie doll. Almost ruined the song for me as I watched.

  • Bryan Ferry -- the world needs more of him. NEVER understood Jerry Hall's bad taste in leaving him. This and Slave to Love --- sigh . . . . .

  • @mrpuppersmom Jerry Hall was with him? And Mick Jagger! Sounds like a classic fucking gold-digger.

  • Bryan Ferry e` strafatto d'eroina su questo video.

  • Amazing song. LOVE this for so many reasons.

  • amazing song.my favourite off the album.

Can't believe Bryan Ferry is still here and still singing ,in 2010(Olympia)

  • This song is like the musical equivilent of chocolate melting in your mouth.

  • Brian Ferry one of the best songs great memories of the 80s thanks for sharing :D

  • Bryan looks just like his album cover from "Another Time, Another Place" ; always amazing!

  • Wow, never seen this video before, it is amazingly good, with an oppressive, predatory atmosphere, representing how some men see and treat women. Makes the Bryan character seem very sleazy, but a very elegant video nevertheless.

  • @closanow Like they say,"perception is everything". I'm a guy,(an gay at that), and I saw this video as quite the opposite. To me, it appeared( he) was the one being used by the cold and aloof young woman.

  • Reminds me of good times in the 80's.

  • I once made a friend because of our mutual admiration for this song!

  • This is, and always will be, a classic.

  • Elegant song!!!

  • Phil Manzanera the Bomb.

  • Avalon is like an energy to me ........'SSS' so sweet song:

  • @klimber1000 and top of the pops

  • GREAT song......

  • excellent tune

  • Fell in love with this song/video when it first came out. Its still one of my favorites. And Bryan Ferry is hot.

  • too bad sophie ward is a licka

  • @BENDOON23 You say that like that is not sexy. She can lick her girl's pussy infront of me anytime.

  • my fav Roxy song

  • i'm 110 % i heard this song in the womb :P

  • @TheMarkc why would someone play this song in the womb?

  • This sort of music just isn't made anymore- am I wrong? Music video was still such a young concept and an artist really had to think about it. Bryan/Roxy was just so good at this time (not that they always weren't). I'm really grateful to have come up during this time, to be as young and impressionable as I was. I thought all Englishmen were like Bryan Ferry.

  • So nice song..

  • a so great classic !!!!!

  • Bryan Ferry . . . sigh . . .

  • @mrpuppersmom Bryan's the MAN! Can't wait for the new CD...

  • @mrpuppersmom Oh yeah...

  • I would like this to be played when I am planted in the ground.Good sendoff I reckon.

  • "And the background's fading out of focus... yes the picture's changing every moment"

    Happy birthday Bryan Ferry! ッ

  • Happy Birthday, Mr. Ferry!

  • sweet & sensual...sensual & sweet...

  • recently i have (for some reason, I dunno...) been reliving my teenage years( only the fun parts...which were FEW) from the 80's and, having been in orchestra and marching band( therefore musically inclined), have been recently on a Roxy Music, Duran Duran, and Thomas Dolby kick! IS THIS WRONG!!! :) No, seriously, this is one of the songs that got me through a LOT of solitary, thinking moments during the time it was popular. Major thanks to whomever found this video and others like it!

  • @justasko No this is what happens when you start getting older...LOL

I do it every day... So i switch my radio in my truck to the good time oldies station..

    60's 70's and 80's but i mainly like the 70's and 80's.....

    LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLE.............

  • Great song !

  • romantic in the best imaginable sense.

  • who is the woman singing in this ? its a beautiful female dreamy, lyrical sound that adds so much to the song, i love it nearly just for this

  • @camohoj think her name is Marcella Detroit. may be wrong though...

  • Unfortunately today music has lost its romance and beauty.

Men are no longer comfortable with expressing their feelings and women have stopped being feminine.

Thank you for this, it reminds me of the safe world I once lived in.

  • @unionof666666

    Agree

  • Everytime I hear this, I think of World War Z.

  • The lady in this video is wearing beautiful shoes! So nice to see some pretty shoes rather than the clodstompers/bondage shoes everyone wears in the videos these days.

  • I'm reminded of Pip and Estella from Dickens' "Great Expectations."

  • love this, Frances Barrone

  • That's what silk infused with cigarette smoke sounds like.

  • brill

  • Is it just me slightly shaking my head with squinting eyes singing to this on a regular basis? i love this 5 stars

  • I *finally* found this tune!! I always used to hear it when it first came out when I was a little kid and I never knew who it was until now

so good! and the video is brilliant too. thanks for uploading this

  • To this day the best dressed band in music

  • classy, classy, classy

art direction, musicianship, songwriting, everything this band did was finessed.

saw them twice back in the day on the Avalon tour.

  • musica e sound sublimi,,,,,video freddo come il ghiaccio !!!!

  • First song I ever heard on a CD was Talk Talk, "The Color of Spring"

  • Bryan Ferry, gran voz, Roxy music, gran grupo, que recuerdos!!!

  • beautiful

  • just beautiful....your never too tough to sit back and dream with this.......

  • This is why I still go through my brother's music collection, because I find bands like this! (Gen X here :P)

  • Beautiful! He was unique, so much cooler than the male singers today!

  • Hypnotic....Sensual.....Brian Ferry.......The Best R&R ever

  • Hypnotic, Sensual, Cool, Brian Ferry, nothing else to say!!!!!!!!!

  • When I was in college I would play this for the girls I brought back to my room. More times than not, it got them in the mood, lol. They'd say it was great sex music. Lol, It makes me wish I was young again, and in college.

  • ultra swarve , sophisticated ,cool , slick , the bees knees1 thumbs up for that ferry bloke .. hes the man with the plan! my fave since i was 16 .. im 26 now !

  • My favorite Brian Ferry song, ultra smooth....

  • This class song reminds me of lindos 82.... love and total class,,

  • This song is very smooth I agree..

  • Bryan Ferry was born to sing in a white tux.

  • hes so cool

  • Who was the backing singer? Whenever I listened to this song, I always looked forward to those notes she hit. So high and controlled to the point of being freaky!

  • I love this song and video. It's romantic and elegant.

  • one of the best songs of the 80's

  • I love this song! 3:22 is Epic!

  • Comment removed

  • I loveeeeeee !

  • Female singer is likely Yanick Etienne.

    :)

At least Wikipedia says so...take from that what you will.

I just went to her website, and even tho the stuff playing she sings lower, it sounds like her. And she mentions doing Avalon in her bio, so I'd say it's pretty likely.

  • Hypnotic...

  • @DavidBenAriel12 tis...........

  • lovely! that girl totally has a basil brush hair though (;

hopefully I will see you one day in concert Roxy

  • This song, and the entire album, impress me with how much better music was back when Avalon came out. One of my favorite albums, and I listen to it over and over. RM's music was soooo cool, sophisticated and thoughtful, unlike the insubstantial garbage made today that can't hold a candle to what this band was doing 30 years ago or more.

  • The female vocalist voice starting at 3:30 is absolutely haunting.

  • @mwboscan Do you know her name?

  • @Electromusicaus

No I don't.If anyone has any info please pass it along.

  • This will be one of the great pieces of modern music that will be played in the 22nd century

  • This song was never appreciated in 82 as it should have been, Ferry & co were ahead of their time.

    Great music

  • This the only album I have ever bought that I like every song on, still makes my hairs stand up on my neck after nearly 30yrs happy listening folks

  • Hasn't cheese changed in 28 years! I'm much more suited to Ward/Ferry than Katy Perry. Kicking myself about how long I worried about being different to most of my 20-30yo peers though.

  • How come there's always 40 or 50 something folks who don't like the really nice videos like this one? Are those the people who had soggy cornflakes that morning or are chronically constipated?

  • New Bryan Ferry album October 26th! WOOO HOOOO!

  • This was one of my first CDs!! One of the few I still have AND still play! Timeless music for me....

  • One of my favorite chapters in Max Brooks World War Z mentions this song, In the novel. It is sung by a Scripps College student "with a voice like an angel" over the schools PA system to inspire the exhausted defenders before the last zombie battle. I always thought it was really fitting.

  • if & when i get married this the first dance...lov it xx

  • Ne plus ultra.

  • cheeezy video, amazing song....

  • One of the best songs of that time period,it still sounds great today,Roxy fan.

  • so bad it's good

  • I really really like this song.

    It was so romantic.....

  • fantastic

  • This is so true to my soul....lets sub each other ?

  • still the best damn song to play when reminiscing.

  • is actually about life on avalon island, off the coast of california.great song ,great place

  • love this days and reminds me of times gone by, god, if there is a god bring me back to those days

  • The first song I fell in love with..............

  • Escapism at its best. Nice.

  • Never knew Sophie Ward was in this. I remember her from Young Sherlock Holmes when I first saw it at the cinema as a kid.

Very beautiful actress. Was shocked to find out she was a lesbian in my adult years, but each to their own.

  • @wandererlain oh that's her from Young Sherlock Holmes? I used to watch that film as a kid. She always looked like a manequin to me. Not real. lol.

  • @Tigerlily21 Yeah, her acting was a bit wooden at times lol

  • A BRILLIANT SONG AND VIDEO BY ROXY MUSIC LOVE Shirls xx

  • now, let's talk about the shoulders of his jacket... that's SOOOOOOO 80es...!

  • best slow dance on the planet

  • No question. Best slow dance on the planet.

  • Real music........... originality at its best

  • i get the same feeling with this song as i do with Peter G's "In your Eyes"

  • i get cold shivers listening to this classic

  • Bryan Ferry has it all - looks - talent - personality - a true artist. Plus he's hot as hell.

  • My god but Sophie was beautiful in this video! and she was only about 19 then.

she is every bit as gorgeous now, nearly 30 years later !

  • Que de souvenirs

  • Yes, avalon!!

  • Very different than the movie I had in my mind. Too political, haves- and have-nots. The saxophonist still looks like Tony Blair.

  • Super Song !!

  • who is the lovely girl in this video ? my searches have been in vain. i always thought she was such an angel since i first saw the vid on MTV, way back in the day. if somebody knows who she is, help me out here. thanx

  • @sugardevil49 says in the description at the top Sophie Ward

  • This was the first song I ever heard played on a CD... 1982 or 1983... my brother's friend in Edmonton had just bought a CD player, spent about $3000 for the thing and I was like dude wtf were you thinking but then he played this song on it and it blew me away... when I could finally afford to buy a CD player of my own about 5 years later this was the first CD I bought... my favorite album ever since.

  • @feraldarryl Nice memories! Hope everything is fine with these persons.

My dad bought our first CD player around 1985. But even then those things were rare in Brasil. GREAT times. =D

  • @feraldarryl

    That was excellent.

  • @feraldarryl i HOPE YOU EXPERIENCED PRICE DEFLATION BY THAT STAGE lol.

  • @DocBrewster ...actually I think I paid $1200 in 1987 for a mediocre stereo system including a CD player, double cassette and turntable, and it was probably about the same quality as a $200 system today!

  • @feraldarryl 3,00 for a motherfucking CD?

  • My friend Simon used to sing this, lost in touch with him and haven't been able to find him ever again. The old heart leaps. when hearing this. Thanks.

  • avalon pure 80s i love it they dont make music like this no more

  • in 1980 i movede to LA i heard this album playing from a neighbors window. since i have wore out albums and CDs ill always have this in my collection

  • If I get married again, this will be the song to whichI have my first dance with my wife, It is a beautiful cool jazzy emotional song.

  • They live defeated?

  • I love this song so much...Brian Ferry and Roxy Music is so friggin "cool"...

  • I friggin love this tune...Damn...Brian Ferry is so friggin "Coool"!!!

  • I'm surprise after all these years Toyota didn't use this song for one of their Toyota Avalon car commercials :). Classic song!

  • avalon...zzz, great music .

  • This song was mentioned in the World War Z book.

  • 2:50 to the end amazing

  • Roxy have been a great band for so long moved with the times. If you listen to the Virginia Plain it is hard to imagine that they would come up with Avalon years later. I love it when those backing girls kick in. Fanatastic!!!!!!
