  • What a terrible performance omg...

  • Wonderful

  • it is a very beautiful aria... if it's well sung. And here, it's not in my opinion. He sings the beginning like he's singing under the shower, without any commitment... To the end, it's better.

However, I liked him in Haydn's Missa Sancti Nicolai that were on youtube.

  • he sounds like he is singing through a toilet paper roll :/

  • this would have to be one of the worst performances of this glorious piece ever. how unheartfelted. how deeply unmoving... maybe this is ramyundo lobo's version of this....awfully disappointnfg,,,

  • I think this is really rather poor. I don't think he has a notable voice, but then he's hardly as well known as those who have sung the bass/baritone arias from Mattheus Passion.

  • check out the interpretation by Ton Koopman, in my opinion the best!

  • @Zoloft61 Listen to John Eliot Gardiner's version. I think that is the best! :)

  • I have heard much better singers, voice and interpretation, however, he is good too. No such thing as "the best singer", I am also very good..haha lol. Performed this in 1997 with Lark Musical Socierty, Los Angeles.

This piece is the best music ever written!!!

  • Moins bon que Walter Berry je trouve (moins grave, moins de résonnance).

  • I agree! Walter Berry puts more passion, more depth, in his performance.

  • I have sung the passion with the Bethany Oratorio Society in Lindsborg Kansas and this Aria is the jewel in this amazing work by Bach.

  • I think his performance is sublime. His voice has great texture.

  • I agree!!! We've met again, kirkbythebest :) David Thomas forever!!!!!!!!!

  • 0:42 - 0:46 : awful!

  • God, you're all so negative. Thomas's voice may not sound like honey, but he's certainly very very able.

  • Thomas says "Mache Dich Mein Herze Rein" very well the second refrain, which is half the battle. Is it only me, or does anyone else hear harmonics on "graben", sort of soft-female like? I get that when I sing aswell. I'm scheduled for Aug 10th to sing, an honour but one I sometimes wish I could do without.

  • The best part of the passion. Too bad the singer isn't anywhere nere good enough for the piece.

  • absolute topklasse!!! mijn favorite deel van de mattheus.

  • but perhaps i'm being too quick to judge

  • No, you are not, munkybrain...this truly isn't good singing even after listening to it for a whole, whole while..., hope some other version finds its way here....

  • this is my favourite from the passion. so beautiful. singer doesn't sit that well with me though to be honest

  • Probably one of the most beautiful arias of the St.Mathew's Passion.

  • E' un brano di una sensualità unica. Bach geniale

  • The Music is great, the production surpasses all I've seen The singer has good voice, he is a complete professional!

  • I agree. This aria is fantastic, one of my favorites, but the singer was not prepared for it in that moment.

  • David Thomas ist einer der Besten!

  • Doesn't he know what he's singing?! And why does he need the text... very unprofessionel. "I want to bury jesus myself..." You can't act that stupid to such a text.

  • He may have mixed it up with "Quia fecit mihi magna" from the magnificat!?

He's even grinning! I don't know, I find this aria heartbreaking and it should be sung that way.

  • He doesn't "need the text". It's usual and not at all unprofessional that in concert performances singers have a copy of the work they are singing. Look other videos of concert masses and oratorios.

  • Totally agree with Yakuza51.

  • I agree that he's not the best for this aria, but it is traditional for singers to use music in performances of cantatas and oratorio, like the St. Matthew Passion (even when the works are being sung in a concert, not in a religious service, as they were originally intended).

  • genau so nicht....schade...

  • This guy is extremely well considered in the baroque music world. Yes he does not sound german, yes he is not soft enough but still he is not as precious and affected as others are and I thank him for that.

  • Yup. A lot of listeners are commenting about his singing but they are not appreciating that rendition. What they're posting in this comments section is like teasing the looks of the 1994 prototype of Cecelia Bruggemeyer (the bassist who appears on 00:27).

  • We want Fischer Dieskau.

    He can sing this marvelous

  • i've sing this aria some weeks ago in school ... yes!!

omg .. he sings that piece like he is the boss and the greatest solist there... really sad

  • This is the most beautiful and sublime aria ever written, and this guy doesn't have a clue. He sounds like his nose is stuffed up. Worse, he ignores the meaning of the words, and looks like he's trying to sell a used car.

  • One of Bach's most touching arias, I've always felt. Too bad about the four square singing here.
