I'd also like to point out that if two people with swords were actually trying to kill one another, it would probably devolve into wild hacking and slashing or a very bloody wrestling match very quickly and look nothing like any Hollywood sword fight or sparring match you've ever seen. Those things have rules. Murder does not. In any case, that's not what wu shu is about. It's a preformance... and a rather beautiful one, IMO.

Perfect practice makes perfect, practicing normally can go both ways, it can help you or disrupt you because you can be doing it right and/or wrong. Perfect practice means to practice the way the move or technique according to what his or her teacher teaches.
0:15 Just an absurd spinning. No use in real combat or real show at all. You can counter him with hitting down his head, wiping his legs or stabbing his body hard. But don't forget to jumping backward before doing so.

no gun in the world requires anywhere near as much training as using a sword. Also, a person may or may not be knocked down from a round, depends on how much they want you to pay for shooting them, youd be amazed at what human beings can do under the influence of a cocktail of both self preservation and rage. @iamjello I have a rocket launcher and I can hit people in the eye with it without even aiming. It also hits their arm, leg, head, groin, etc. all in one shot.
a gun: Close range the shooter is screwed, however at a long distance (and if u dont miss and hit a vital organ) youll win the fight
a sword: close range major advantage long range im screwed.
now if i have a gun and a sword and someone brakes into my home depending on the weapon they bear will depend on wether i cock my gun and blow their freakin head or i grab my Gum-do and slice their head off....argument settled. shutup!
A bullet impact is painful yes, but their are factors such as if its a grazing shot, if it embeds and how strong the constitution of the person hit. someone who trains in martial arts also trains their minds along with their bodies. I wont say bullets arent going to hurt like hell, but its not going to down them every time. A 9mm isn't going to knock you off your feet. Besides, who said it would be an instance where the swordsman wasn't armed?
*sigh* A common ignorant belief that a gun can best a trained swordsman every time. Several factors have to be taken into considering during such a comparison. A: a few styles train the user to dodge projectiles as fast as bullets B: if you dont hit the swordsman in a vital place to stop him/her at once, odds are your losing that arm. C: Whose the bigger idiot, the one that dedicates their lives to the study of proper defense or the one who just picks up a weapon that requires no skill to use?
A: No, there's no style in wich you can dodge as fast or faster then a bullet, however you might predict when/where someone is gonna shoot and avoid it.
B: Depends on the ranges really... If you actually get a shot anywhere on the body while he's charging he will fall to the ground from the shot, in either tremendous pain or from the impact of the shot.
C: Definately the guy with the swords.... You never walk around with swords on town where rapes/murders/assault/robbery is common. Equilibrium!
A: You can dedicate your entire life to martial arts, but no one can dodge a bullet, you can predict where it will be, but remember, there will always be more than one shot.
B: Unless you're high or on drugs, a bullet hitting you almost anywhere is gonna stop you.
(body, legs or arms.)
(plus firing a gun takes quite a bit of skill, otherwise military bootcamp would be a bit shorter...)
@Rikashiku Yeah seriously, China invented the gun, Europeans made it better. Now Europeans invent stuff that China makes better. Nothing wrong with that.
MANILA, Philippines -- On May 21, 1967, almost 400 members of an obscure sect called Lapiang Malaya marched to Malacañang Palace to overthrow then President Ferdinand Marcos.
Holding bolos (machette) and bearing amulets, they charged into a group of policemen who blocked their path in Pasay City. After the skirmish, over 30 lay dead.
It trains and develop that fighting intensity and skill to apply in real blade fighting. In countries such as in many South East Asia and Africa where machette fighting is still fought such as riots between clans and gangs this sword fighting will be effective in saving yours, your family and friends lives against the other side.
@newtubetubetube Not only do you not know the context of my comment (it's nearly a year old, so comments that were actual back then are different from today's) and you also didn't get it.
What I wanted to say is that what we see is not a real fight, not even sparring - it's prepared and trained choreography like model situations in karate - this is why I compared it to dance.
@Salisaad Real fight would mean that one of both practitioner would get kill. You wont see that here, ever. Stop hoping to see that. Stop been displeased when you see it its "fake". Safe weapon sparring is not more realist then this. Kata are more then trained choreography, visualization make it real to the mind and it is efficient training.
@Salisaad thats why they call them CHOREOGRAPHED fights. this is only a competition, not reality so why does it have to reflect it 100%? its supposed to be a demonstration of their manuevers reflecting their range of martial talent, skill and strength...not "oh look im gonna do this exact form for a fight". sure, some people only learn it for competitions. but those who practice the applications that go along with forms WILL tear people apart
@Salisaad , this is not a dance. If you were to fight either one, you would feel the pressure and be cut into pieces or speared to death especially you know nothing about how these weapons work. Don't kid yourself, they are real as Jet Li is real. For demonstrations, they hold back. In real life situation, they cut you up and make breakfast of you with scrambled eggs and coffee. Oh, taste so good. haha.....
@TalesIncs yeah sure all Budokai are slow like hell... and we are all a bunch of jack asses who stand still in a fight. Dude you clearly don't know what's Kenjutsu don't ya. they're always wide open to attakcs, I only need one slash.... and it's over
Those spears are made of flexible rattan or wood they don't break easily. usually to block they don't directly block sharp weapons but deflect it and counter attack because they are light, speed is what they count on a direct block especially against heavy blades the spear will break.
also important to remember that the sword user isn't trying to cut through or break the spear here. As your description says it's to develop timing and confidence, not to gain a victory over your partner at this particular moment.
0:20 (paused) If she were to pivot the spear off of the swords down towards her right, while swinging the other side at him, and sweep her left foot forward, then in and around (tripping motion)... she would have him pinned.

Guns are easy to use, and aren't easy to use at the same time.
Most people just grab a gun, illegally or in armed service and just point and shoot without perception.
Highly trained gunmen know that accuracy is important.
But unless you're a nutcase, the chances of being attacked by a gun is lower than the chances of being attacked by swords.
Some Martial arts actually teach gun use, mostly for military training.
Most of Chinas army is trained in Kung Fu before learning basic army drills.

Too bad it's all choreographed and people don't fight in real life in Asia like that D:
ProfessorCrow 2 years ago 2
It is still real in countries that use machette in fight.
dantankun 2 years ago
But this does not actually reflect reality, it's more like a dance.
Salisaad 2 years ago 13
It trains and develop that fighting intensity and skill to apply in real blade fighting. In countries such as in many South East Asia and Africa where machette fighting is still fought such as riots between clans and gangs this sword fighting will be effective in saving yours, your family and friends lives against the other side.
dantankun 2 years ago 4
@dantankun Until some bitch brings out a gun. I'd like to see your dance come into effect then! Ahaa :L
Robbie485 1 year ago
@Salisaad If you can dance like that you are a very good fighter. Why your comment is the highest rated is beyond understanding.
newtubetubetube 1 year ago
@newtubetubetube Not only do you not know the context of my comment (it's nearly a year old, so comments that were actual back then are different from today's) and you also didn't get it.
What I wanted to say is that what we see is not a real fight, not even sparring - it's prepared and trained choreography like model situations in karate - this is why I compared it to dance.
Salisaad 1 year ago
@Salisaad Real fight would mean that one of both practitioner would get kill. You wont see that here, ever. Stop hoping to see that. Stop been displeased when you see it its "fake". Safe weapon sparring is not more realist then this. Kata are more then trained choreography, visualization make it real to the mind and it is efficient training.
newtubetubetube 1 year ago
@Salisaad thats why they call them CHOREOGRAPHED fights. this is only a competition, not reality so why does it have to reflect it 100%? its supposed to be a demonstration of their manuevers reflecting their range of martial talent, skill and strength...not "oh look im gonna do this exact form for a fight". sure, some people only learn it for competitions. but those who practice the applications that go along with forms WILL tear people apart
Nonkosher 1 year ago
@Salisaad this is theatrics but swords are good if you know how to use them properly.
randomguy7244 1 year ago
@Salisaad , this is not a dance. If you were to fight either one, you would feel the pressure and be cut into pieces or speared to death especially you know nothing about how these weapons work. Don't kid yourself, they are real as Jet Li is real. For demonstrations, they hold back. In real life situation, they cut you up and make breakfast of you with scrambled eggs and coffee. Oh, taste so good. haha.....

@TalesIncs yeah sure all Budokai are slow like hell... and we are all a bunch of jack asses who stand still in a fight. Dude you clearly don't know what's Kenjutsu don't ya. they're always wide open to attakcs, I only need one slash.... and it's over
jordouellette 11 months ago
ya but the art of fighting with weapons is pretty much dead as far as real combat goes

i apologize for the german user balubulaba,
this was a pretty good video,
i didn't know that a spear can be such a gallant weapon, the dash in 0:11 was incredible!

seen swords like these,
they bend easy, but straigthen out again.
but they also cut through small pieces of wood easy. So just wondering how the spear can be use to parry without breaking.
Eqvaliser 2 years ago 2
Those spears are made of flexible rattan or wood they don't break easily. usually to block they don't directly block sharp weapons but deflect it and counter attack because they are light, speed is what they count on a direct block especially against heavy blades the spear will break.
dantankun 2 years ago
also important to remember that the sword user isn't trying to cut through or break the spear here. As your description says it's to develop timing and confidence, not to gain a victory over your partner at this particular moment.

i am a red belt kong fu fighter and i take spear and dagger i can kill them in 2min
nash2021 2 years ago
Two minutes is too long.
dantankun 2 years ago
...... Red Belt?
Are we still talking about kung fu?
2 minutes is too long, usually you fight with a spear using 2 hands...
qwastic 2 years ago
Um...She DID use two hands. I don't get your point.
Also, you all know this isn't an actual fight, right? It was choreographed. This is just an exhibition. Wushu matches are done without weapons.
TwilightDuality 2 years ago 4
2 mins is too long even if don't have a weapon... nash is the next genius world record's stupidest person.

wow! was that choreographed?
JunkPileFool 2 years ago
Well choreographed.
0:20 (paused) If she were to pivot the spear off of the swords down towards her right, while swinging the other side at him, and sweep her left foot forward, then in and around (tripping motion)... she would have him pinned.

thats an act right?
dermis89 2 years ago 2
lets replace the SPEAR with TWIN HOOKS
:P
streetsoccermexico 2 years ago
if we did (i think) twin hooks would win cuz the twin hooks are like swords (because they're sharp) only with hooks at the end of them
that's MY opinion
