Someone should have told Rory that he shouldn't sing. His voice sounds like shit through a desk fan. There's a reason he doesn't make it on RS top 100 guitarists too.
@nwleeuw yeah, really. their critics have always sucked. bunch of elitists and non musicians. whenever you read a rolling stone critic use the term '12 bar blues', you could tell right away the guy had no idea what the fuck he was talking about. a snippet of an early review of van halen, read: "california band that grinds out a variety of variations on the basic "louie louie" thump theme". lol. but to them, robert johnson was and still is the most technically proficient guitarist ever. lol.
I had the prvilege of seeing Rory was -- he was opening for someone -- don't remember who. He blew it off the map and we left after he played. That was enough music for one night -- any night.
I have seen a lot of guitarplayers play like Clapton, Hendrix, Page, Blackmore ( all great guitarplayers ), but I have never seen someone playing like Rory ....anybody....
@chimbolo89 with a comment like yours, 1 wonders if u are familiar with his body of work at all or just seen this 1 video of rory and based your entire opinion of rory off of it. I can see u like srv, and as much as i love vaughan...he had nothing on rory when it came to the guitar. Not skills, licks, riffs, solos, improv, SCALES and certainly not showmanship. Just saying.
Sorry people but if you want to bicker about Page and Beck please go to their videos...... these 4.44 mins belong to my god!!! ... RIP Rory from a very proud Donegal man
Fortunate to have seen Rory twice. Great concerts!
But please, Page the guitarists ever? I love Jimmy Page, but he's not even on the same level as the very best out there. Just look at some of your great jazz fusion players. And Hendix? The best lack player? Come on, Hendrix was by far the more innovative, sonically superior of the two. For his time there was no one better. But this is about Gallagher, and it's true, one of the forgotten heros of the electric, blues, guitar!
Why is it that all the true greats of the 60's thru 90's didn't get to a ripe old age it's a true shame ,but on the other hand i can see they probally lived a life time thru the passion of there music
He will always be in the top 5 rock/blues guitarists in the world ever he knew his blues history like clapton did that made a colossal difference to his playing and writing a true master of the stratocaster.r.i.p rory god bless you.
I love Stevie and you always hear about all these guys but nobody seems to remember Rory, when I was coming up he was the man, none of these bullshit titles calling him God and what not, he was just one hell of a guitar player and played various styles, so if you don't know him START LISTENING ! you may be surprised
Rory played an important role in my young rock-and-roll life, He wasn't Hendrix or Zeppelin to be sure, but his brand of rock was simply that, his brand. Rory rocked. His history will always play out in my history of rock and roll. You will always be part of that elite group Rory. May you live forever! I don't know, but I hope you are still among us. If you aren't, I don't want to know.
Superb stuff! Love Rory's harder edged sound from the late 70's (both Photo Finish and Top Priority with SAHB's Ted McKenna on drums were Top Class). His earlier and later albums were great as well. Cheers for posting.
in so many areas we have made so much progress since the 70s but they had the old grey whistle test and i grew up with smash hits and a sell out version of top of the pops....nuff said! gallagher = master.
@vivaldi01 Yeah Rory certainly had plenty of that (love the rawness to some of his playing). It was actually an old work colleague of mine who got me into his music back in the late 90's (for which i will be eternally grateful). Ah......Richard Thomson, that name rings a bell. I'm also a fan of Gerry Rafferty's (RIP) music , i'm sure he played on a track or two on his Night Owl album.
it's a shame you probably never had the pleasure of seeing Rory live.
Interesting you mention Gerry Rafferty (indeed Richard Thomson played on Night Owl) ; both Rafferty & Gallagher were hugely talented, both shunned the fame- spotlight and both sadly died in the same way.
@vivaldi01 Yes it would have been fabulous to have seen Rory in all his 70's glory. However i was only 5 in '79 and even if i'd been able to go to a show i wouldn't have seen very much, ha ha. Was lucky enough to see Gerry live, back in '93. He was superb and his band were Top Drawer (Hugh Burns and seasoned american session player Jerry Donahue on guitars ctc). Such a shame, both Rory and Gerry were talented decent human beings but the demon drink got hold from an early age and never let go.
@vivaldi01 You cant even put them together. Page is probably the greatest guitarist ever, Clapton the greatest white blues guitarist, Hendrix the best black rock guitarist. Rory was a strange genetic mutation of all of them, that makes him so amazing, unique, and incomparable.
Eric Clapton originally joined the Yardbird in 1963, when he left, he asked Page to take his place, Page refused because he was doing so well playing sessions, so Page recommended his childhood friend Beck. In 1968, after Page started getting call's to do elevator music, he quit being a session guitarist, and a week later when Paul Samual-Smith quit the Yardbirds, Page joined on bass. After a few months, Jeff recommended moving Page to guitar (a move he still regrets).
They had a two guitarist lineup from 1966-67, when Beck was fired from the band (they didn't need him anymore, so they left him at a gas station in the Southern U.S.) and Page continued as lead guitarist.
Next time, do just a little bit of homework before you make a comment like that.
@PBANDSNOW Thx for reproof, I always thought he left yardbirds to start solo career or something like that, never knew he was fired. Aldhough as a guitarist I whouldn't call Page the best guitarist ever. His technical skill is "only" very good and things like tone and feeling are very subjecive.
très bon !!!

For me, Blackmore was more of a show-off.
Loved DP and early Rainbow but Ritchie was nowhere near as gifted as Rory .
