Ma Lin did an excellent job returning Liu Guoliang's serves. However, Liu was in control of the game even though it was the closest championship match ever in history.
@NYLifeInNJ the way ma lin grips his racket and trained made him a very forehand dominated player, however tht comes with the consequence of weak RPB, he uses the TPB because it is safer and easier to execute.
damn. liu is the most aggressive player i've seen. granted it was during the time of speed glue, small ball, and hiding serves, but still. that guy's nuts
@NextxtGen The new 40mm makes a significant difference but I still think that Liu's technique was very powerful. I think also that he faced a lot of trouble when he could not hide his serve anymore and his opponents were able to read his serves.
You can tell that the short pips of Liu in combination with the smaller ball gives an almost unfair advantage. With the larger ball, this would never be possible.
My God! Liu could hit it hard! I noticed that he liked to block a lot on his backhand side even when he had a hell of a RPB loop. I would like to add that I am not aware of any professional tt player using short-pips on the forehand side. I guess Liu was a unique specimen!
@slax2501 there were many... many short pip players before Liu in the 20th century. The only player left that uses short pip forehand at the highest level is He Zhi Wen
@GeneralSpecific3 Kim ki-taek used Butterfly Impartial and he was amazing. Also, Longcan played with Spectol pips-out rubber. I meant that today, you don't really see that anymore. There are several but I can count them with my fingers. I am sorry for the misunderstanding....
The way short pips' meant to be played.

@Jeteso2009 Nah, RPB would do the trick. Does anyone know why Ma Lin didn't employ RPB during this match?

@plot000000 I have to agree with you. He was known as The Hammer. Those flat hits using short pips are hard to return.
