hema malini simply does not possess the grace of dance movement that vyjayanthimala is naturally endowed with; even in looks, vyjayanthimala has that classic beauty whereas hema malini is just an above average looking south indian girl; hema malini's forehead is so big that i wouldn't even consider her good looking;
Can anyone tell me the name of the song accompanies this dancer.? There was a recording made of it with full orchestration...it is something I remember hearing as a child and have never forgotten. Thanks
Who is the lady that dance in the black&white she is amazing, she has strong legs and arms she makes the dance look so easy, so I tried it and almost broke my Dam back lol.
several of Hema's movements reminds me of Kuchipudi rather than Bharatanatyam. Is it possible that her dance is not pure Bharatanatyam? I only know that Hema can do Kuchipudi.
Vyjayanthi is obviously the better dancer without a doubt, but Hema is also passionate about her dancing so its not nice to say she is a bad dancer. She is good but not as great as Vjy and other notables but she is good in her own way.
Vyjayanthimala is a very neat dancer with clear movements. Hema is beautiful, but she doesn't finish her movements and everything looks a bit sloppy. I like them both because they have lovely expressions, but its clear who the better dancer is.
The clarity and precision in Vyjayantimala's dance (Mudras, footwork, facial expressions, grace & dignity) is phenomenal. Hema on the other hand, looks very very beautiful and it ends there. As a dancer she is average. Many unsung Bharatnatyam Dancers are a lot better than her.
@qiron Well said. I would concur. Vyjayanthimala's dance is far superior. I had to see Hema Malini perform once, and I found her stunning to look at, but not very adept.
bharatnatiyum is not a flexible dance. Vyjayantimala is dancing to something that is for a beginners "blossoming", and its supposed to be stiff becuz its a shoulder rotation . Think abt it, would it look good if it was flexable?
My 50 y.o. auntie, who is 5'1" and 96 kg thinks that Vyjayantimala in this video is too flexible and too slim. And too fast. And too young to show good bharatnatya
Vayajanthimala is beautifully quick on her feet, because of which her dances in Amrapali (especially the "Dance Competition" scene there) were possible, I believe.
@shabnum92 Bharatanatyam IS a flexible and graceful dance. If it weren't for the grace, it would not be as beautiful. The grace is not obvious as in Ballet or Kathak, but I assure you that it exists. And because of all the fantastic poses in Bharatanatyam, flexibility is useful too.
@pushpanjali well said:) Yes bharatnatyum is a flexible dance but your movements cannot be like kathak (to flexible) they have to be very clear and to make it clear you have to have some stiffness. You got to be flexible to do all the movements but you got to that the movie exactly right which makes it stiff. Its hard to explain, you got to dance it to know it.
@shabnum92 I understand what you mean now! Yes, there has to be that sharpness and stiffness and the grace too. Kathak also has its sharpness, the Lucknow style is soft and the Jaipur style is more "stiff". I know exactly what you mean, I learn both Bharatanatyam and Kathak. :)
@shabnum92 "Alarippu" is actually a great dance to show the dancer's ability, even though it's usually the first item a student learns. It takes a very strong dancer to perform "Alarippu" well. I once read that the quality of a dancer's "Alarippu" can tell you how good of a dancer she/he is. :-)
shabnum92 I hear what you are saying.I have always felt that alarippu is a timeless item in the career of a bharatanatyam dancer, something like the arabesque position in the classical ballet vocabulary... it immediately displays your technique, placemet, musicality, rhythm and line. And at the height of the true dancer's career, the unique emotion and spirit she colours this pure received pronounciation of dance with, to make it unique...without resorting to hip movements like ms vmala.
Hi janingrigory..that b/w clip of Vyjayanthi is from the movie called "New Delhi" with Kishore Kumar. She did Bharat Natyam, Bhangra and Rock and roll. Normally Vyju is fantastic but here I felt her to be a bit stiff in comparision with Hema who seemed a lot more flexible.
