The price will also go down when it's legalized, and then it will be less profitable to produce drugs. It will save a lot of costs such as fighting, jailing, persecuting these people. Instead the money could be invested in prevention programs.

If the drug traders were ever able to make it into the prison they could steal it and if they were able to export it quickly enough, they would make the biggest score of their lives. I think that Iran as been over demonized by the Bush administration and McCain. They are trying to stop the trade of heroin and opium which is good since 80% of the world's heroin comes from Afghanistan. If the Iranians are able to cut off the flow of drugs means fewer addicts & less funding for the Taliban.

2. When a government has a strong, productive workforce, it has a better economy. A better economy wins the hearts of the people, regardless of the political ideology in power. Just look at China. Its people are ok with giving up their freedom of political dissidence because they are satisfied with their economic growth.
