I love this freakin song.. I'm 26 and I remember as a kid my parents always watched "this old house"... Now I didn't care about the show but this song always stuck out and now listening it and hearing with the lyrics its obviously a song for all ages and anyone with a decent appreciation for music..
This is one of the best tunes from that era. We've posted a version with a ukulele accompaniment - v=3nxYXP3F-jg - want to get this gem back into the common acoustic swing repertoire.
Russ Morash of "This Old House," had selected this theme because it was so evocative of a time past, yet still had much to offer, much like the old houses the show depicted. It was used on the program until WGBH sold the show to Time, Inc. in 2002. I'm sure the corporate suits thought this theme to be too old-fashioned and a turn-off to the younger generation of new homeowners, used to HGTV, whom they were trying to woo. Too bad as the new theme, and today's version of the show, lack any soul.
Norm: Hey Bob, today we are going to install a new cast iron bathtub on the third floor. It looks like we'll have to manually carry the new tub up three flights of stairs.
Bob: Well, while you guys are working on the new bathtub... the home owners and I are going into town to select a VERY important element of this project... the wallpaper!
Man, I just saw a new episode of "This Old House" on the "Create" channel about two days ago... and the new theme song is just... horrible. I miss watching Bob and Norm make awesome furniture. :(
Don't know who the clarinetist is for sure, but Gene Sedric is a good guess, he worked with Fats for a long time. You can tell by the sound he sure played a soft, easy reed!
Thanks for this one 525wireman - it is new to me in NZ. I am so glad the interest in Waller is so great and that people like yourself will take the trouble to seek out these recordings.
When you hear, see or otherwise experience some form of art that existed before YOU existed that is THIS good is somehow makes you think of your own mortality. If something this good could have existed in the past which goes unnoticed by the majority in these "modern" times what OTHER forms of magic existed back then that we no longer appreciate? What is the significance of our OWN accomplishements NOW and how soon will they be invalidated by the ever evolving "now"?
WoW! Thanks for posting this! I read about this tune on Fats' bio and had to hear anew this song I've heard 100s of times already.
It made me cry, to think how many millions of us know this song from Tv, but not that it's Fats' music that we love. There are so many magic minds behind the music we love, we just don't know enough about them . . . . . . . . .
I added this to my 1935 playlist, one of 111 lists that are waiting to carry you back to the sounds of any year from 1900 to today . . .
Listening again, one day later, still in awe! That driving beat in the background..............it's not that far from the driving beat that popped up in disco music 40 years later. The sound and style change while vestiges of the past remain. Wayyyyyyyyy coolllllllll ! ! !
the style of this song reminds me a lot of the motel 6 "we'll leave the lights on..." commercial song. Is there a name for the style of music for those two songs?
When this song was used for the TOH show, I used to pick up my son and daugther and dance with them (when I wasnt away on deployments). They used to try and run and hide but I found them and made dance with me. Long running family funny story. Now she is in college and I know the wedding day is just over the horizon. Where does the time go.
Where can I get a copy of Fats doing Loisiana Fairytale? I have searched high and low;please help my husband is a true Fats fan, I like Leon R. but for my sweet no ther will do. Help!
If you mean a copy as in original 78 rpm, I can't help you. If you want an mp3 of it, that I can send you. Just send me an e-mail address to send it to.
Who's playing this growling clarinet? Gene Sedric or Rudy Powell?

@architrave1 I couldn't agree more, architrave1. This theme is to "This Old House" as "TWX in 12 Bars" was to "Wall Street Week with Louis Rukeyser."

@architrave1 The corporate suits whose parents/grandparents never took the time to expose them to the classics, you mean!!!
