  • Omg this is amazing!!!!!! Thank you so much!!!!

  • Amazing tool, and so easy to use. I love technology!

  • Thanks for showing us how the refine edge works but WHY does it work the way it does?? Many show us how to do things in Photoshop but hardly ever WHY.

My question is the REFINE RADIOUS TOOL revealed further whiskers when you drew out from the bunny. Why did the RRT reveal WHISKERS and NOT the rest of the BACKGROUND ??

  • @raintrainer - by starting on the rabbit and painting away I told the Refine Radius Tool (RRT) analyzed the areas I wanted to keep. When holding the OPT/ALT key and clicking or painting the background, you tell the RRT what areas you want to remove. In either case, it's analyzing the area within the brush radius.

  • Realy cool thanks for your tutorial very helpfull

  • I know you're here for the bunny :3

  • many thanks

  • good jop """

  • im using adobe photoshop elements and i cant figure out how to share my video i mean i press the facebook icon but it says it needs a valid file and i dont know what there talking about and i also want to upload it to youtube someone please tell me how to do this

  • ur tutorials are always easy and great... and am glad I subscribed..

  • tell you what dude..i've seen a lot of freaking tutorial about refining edges and a whole lot more about photoshop but some of them are just,,i don't know?dickheads or something.. but i could tell you honestly,YOU ARE exceptionally AWESOME!!..you explain very clearly straight up.,two thumbs up for you man.great job.!! and you're welcome..

  • Bunny Bunny!!!!!! :3

  • Bunny Bunny !!

  • hi after using the Refine Edge command, how could I insert a background into it.

  • @winlee09 - when you use the Refine Edge command, you have several options for either new layers, new layer with mask, or even new document. To add a background, you would create a separate layer, and place it below the selection you made with Refine Edge.

  • WOW!!!

  • Im a big fan of your mustache... I mean. Your photoshopmustache. ... Your skills. Of the mustache.

  • thanks AJ for ur time and effort on ur awesome videos! big fan of urs..

  • AJ this is amazing...omg what a release :O I`m so glad because for professional cutaway, I must do it step by step...and u know it`s taking a quite long time...but with this tool (refining edges) and its powerfull settings... omg I feel like God give me 8 hands more like bonus. Thanks alot AJ.

  • @aj man thnx u da 1st person 2 help me wit dis im goin 2 try it nd see how it goes i thought my photoshop messed up or somethin lol thnx

  • @AJ CAN U HELP ME WEN I DO THIS IT MAKES MY PICS EDGES FADE OUT IDK Y CANU HELP ME

  • @81GPAT - if the brush is pulling too much information out, hold the Option key (on a Mac), or the ALT key (on a PC) to reverse the effect. You will also need to adjust the Edge Detection settings (you probably don't need as high a value as I use in the video).

  • AJ!!ur really awesome!!ur tutorials are really good..i have started enjoying post processing because of ur videos!!!thanks :) and good luck to u...

  • hy am newbie for photoshop..just want to ask a few question..before u refine the edge r u make some layer to the image first..or u just rifined it directly??i'll wait for ur answer n thx for d vid..very understandable^^,

  • This has just helped me out so much, especially trying to figure out how to output the extracted image to a pure white background.

  • You're so cool dude. I'm 16 and I wanna be a Graphice Design Artist, I just learned Photoshop last June. Im making video tutorials too. Thanks for sharing, your are so freaking amazing!

  • nice tutorial.. ilove your necklace:)

  • great tutorial................thanks!

  • honestly the best tutorial ive seen for photoshop! and trust me, ive seen em all!! love the refine edge command! ~ thank u:)

  • @devlexmoe - thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the tutorial. Please tell folks about my channel as I create the videos in response to subscriber questions. :^)

  • Thank you for making this tool SIMPLE to understand! The Lynda video was just..... blah... LOL

  • @Cristalle729 - thanks for the compliment. Call the folks at Lynda, tell them I'd be an asset. ;^)

  • my refine edge is deleting the stuff I want nicer edges, and I dont got it on delete. help

  • @ColaBoyMW2 - without seeing your screen, my first thought would be to look at your initial selection. It sounds like you have the opposite of what you want selected if things are being deleted.

Also, Refine Edge doesn't delete from the dialogue screen. You can create a layer mask, a new layer with a mask, or even create documents, but it shouldn't delete.

Let me know if you're still having problems.

  • whast the deal with macs?

  • @happygamestvfun1 - for the purpose of the video recordings, I have better control than I would on a PC. Adobe products are platform neutral, and my intention is for the content to be applicable to anyone. If I were demonstrating a PC specific feature, then I would switch the recording to a PC in that instance.

  • @happygamestvfun1 It's the same but more expensive.

  • very good tut

    thanks! =]

  • Does it work for CS 3 too?

  • @infiniteshit you can use the Refine Edge commands in CS3, however, the smart radius demonstration is an update made specifically to Photoshop CS5.

  • Hi!

    Great tutorial, AJ, congrats...

I have a small problem trying to do it myself, too... Whenever I try to "paint" the selection, this selection jump to the complete image, so I'm not able to select just the dog's face, for example... Is there any setting I have to do, to let me select just what I want ?

  • @votraginbot if there's not enough separation between your foreground object and the background the selection can "bleed" a bit (as happened in the video when I selected the bunny). You can press OPT/ALT to paint out what you don't want. If the Quick Selection Tool simply doesn't work for the entire selection, then I would switch to another tool to complete the selection.

  • @NigerDrako you can also use the square bracket keys [ or ] to size brushes if you don't wish to use the mouse-drag combo. Left bracket is smaller, right bracket is bigger. Add the SHIFT key to change the feathering of the brush.

  • @ajwood2001

ey does that work for windows too?

cuz ive been trying to do that but nothing happens

  • @NigerDrako Yes, the keys are the same for Windows. You'll want to make sure your mouse focus is in the document window, not in the toolbar, panels, or options. Works in any version of Photoshop, on both Mac & PC platforms.

  • @ajwood2001

thanx i could do it but not with that keys i had to change them but still works, now im waiting for more tutorials for CS5

  • ey i wanna know how did u change the size of your brush (also eraser, selection tool etc.) cuz i know hot to do it with Alt + right click and moving the cursor (PC) but its a lot to press and i noticed that urs just change the size so ez it doesnt look like the way i do it... so if u could tell me how to u change ur brush's size ill thank u...

  • @NigerDrako he clearly explained that. Left and right square bracket keys ex: [ ]

  • Thx a lot

  • Thx a lot !

  • im subscribing for this

  • Good Stuff!

  • this is SO amazing, any other "smart" selection program will be dispensable.

  • this is will be VERY useful

btw, what video software do you use on this video?

  • @iSennin I currently use Screenflow for recording, the titling was done with Photoshop (timeline animation panel) with music applied from iMovie. All the editing & post was also done with Screenflow.

  • @ajwood2001 thanks :)

  • awesome indeed!
