I found the new one too cumbersome, too big, too heavy. I like our 04 X much better. It had plenty of room already. The gas mileage, I hear it is not as good on the later generation. Hands down.. the prior models are my 1st choice. We will keep ours until the wheels fall off, we have no need to own a car, or it is damaged beyond reasonable repair.

@Wukaza 09 is v6 with VDC. it has almost the same power and not only that, but it can place it down better.

Whats the wheels at 5:26 you can see that regardless of high end power, the traction control is what makes this car worth buying.

As for the drag, well yes the high end power and lower weight did help the 07 there.

The 09 Forester in the video is an "X" model...N/A Flat-4, 170hp. The 07 model is the "XT" turbocharged H-4 making 230hp. Subaru doesn't make a V6, it's an H6, and it's only found in the Tribeca or Legacy, not the Forester.

Chicago, after a 9 inch snow:

Zipping around traction control off (i am more used to my old 2000 forester), I did zip out into suburban traffic. Not bad, faster than the old 2000, which was a base model, light and pretty quick for a light SUV.

But wait, i forgot and pulled out in 2nd gear, not first! Whoa. The 2010 FXT has a lot of low end torque.

If subaru added a 5 or 6 speed and upped the torque and hp by 10-15%, they would be top of the class hands down. As is, they are great!

For the 09 model in the sand, did you put the shift to 'D' or in '2'? It makes a whole lot of difference in 2 (locks equal torque distribution and prevent unnecessary upshift which can kill momentum)

What transmissions do these cars have? can you tell which is auto or manual? i think the they are both autos but not sure, and are the auto foresters better off road. I say this because i heard that they have different AWD systems is this true? thanks

The manual transmission is much better on the Subaru cause its full time 50/50 power four wheel drive differential. The automatic, has a 45/55 power ratio front to back and only transfers power when slippage occurs so yon ca lose control. The manual transmission has a permanent locking center differential which is why it has a permanent 4x4 drive system unlike the automatic that has a computer control it.

you can get the 09 touring package which has tinted windows. I have a black touring package and I love it. there a tank in the snow.

Neither is digging yourself out. If you spin tires too much you'll sink in the sand and get stuck. They were driving slow to show the AWD system working. If they drove fast and kept it floored, any car could do that. Great video.

Sorry, I know you posted this a while age, but thought I'd respond anyway. It is larger and the edges are more rounded, but part of it's difference in appearance is due to growth. The 09 has higher ground clearance, better approach and departure angles, a lot more 2nd row leg room, and greater cubic feet in the cargo area. I test drove one a while back and it's a very solid and deceptively roomy small suv. It's easily best in it's class (at least in the US).

this years forester is strictly going for off roading and functionality,,carry more cargo=practical..

Even before I see this vid I liked new forester, older models sort of trapped between station wagon and SUV.... I'm going to get on this summer,, can't wait..

The fucking 09 model is in low range. simple as that. the MT lower class models come with a HR / LR lever... the XT doesnt, its a more sport affiliated car... and why not try and get the 07 going in the sand again instead of continuing to drive it into the same sand ditch? notice how the 09 avoided that area the whole test?

there are both some pros and cons with both, i personally like the taller 09 because i'm tall myself but since driving both of the cars, i somehow find the older version to be a tad bit better at handling and offroading capabilities.... and that includes snow... it's important to driving in that! but i think the 09 is maybe better.... we'll just have to see.

the black car was an 2007 2,5 XT model with 169kw there was a big scoop :) The new Subaru was standard 2.0 with 116 kw. New Forester is bigger, higher and better in qualiti but the turbo makes a big difference. In dragrace was to similar cars with no turbos, but if you hawe higher car, and new motor you cant win, its clear :)

look again... the '08 was an XT model... there was a scoop.... LOOK MAN.... then the '09 was the 2.0X... whether or not the black one was a 2.0XT or a 2.5XT you cant be sure, but either way the turbo make a difference.

First of all, I would say the '09 NA did better in the sand, & that's because in those conditions power isn't as important as ground clearance, traction/tires, suspension, etc. If you've spent much time around autox, you would know that many of the normally aspirated cars do very well when set up right. Power would help, but as I said, not as much. Besides, my comment was pertaining to the race at the end, since most people don't drive through sand like that on a daily basis.

if u look at the sandtrap portion you can clearly see the scoop on the hood of the 07,plus look at the first race at the end..the 07 is clearly in front,if its still a 07 coz its not even the same forester,the one in the sand is black and the other in the end race is a non xt (turbo)blue or sage forester and the race is won by a mere second!! voila.
