In the Catholic religion, the host is the communion wafer. It is considered to contain the true presence of Christ, to be his very flesh in the form of bread. If one is to take it and not eat it, it is considered an blasphemy and desecration.

Fife does not seem to realize that even if Harper had consumed the wafer there is a problem. Yes, it is sacrilegious to walk around with the host in one's pocket but it is also sacrilegious to consume the host when one is not entitled to do so. Only Catholics in a state of grace (i.e. if aware of sin, having confessed and been absolved of them) may receive communion at a Catholic Mass.

As a Protestant, Harper should not have consumed the host.

That's only a problem for Catholics, as a Protestant, Prime Minister Harper is fully able to look into his own soul and decide if it is proper for him to partake of communion or not. If the Catholic God doesn't like it he can do whatever he wants about it. HE didn't do anything, so I guess it's OK with Him, so it's OK with me.
