Marriage Licenses. Original purpose was to mandate government recognition of marriages to fight against inter-racial marriages. Wishing there was a free society where benefits from gov't aren't an issue since it should just be dealt with the couple in question AND someone to write out the contractual benefits (last will, hospital visits).

We could solve this problem by getting the government out of the marriage business. Everyone gay or straight gets a civil union certificate. That way everyone's RIGHTS are equal. Furthermore, we let religious institutions handle the RITE of marriage. If you are gay, get married at a gay religious institution. That way religious institutions' RIGHTS (1st Amendment) to practice and administer their RITES as they see fit are protected. RITES are not RIGHTS and RIGHTS are not RITES.

You could have a perfectly fine analogy between jews & blacks, but I could be like "But Jews had to wear a star on their shirt! Blacks never had to do that!" Who CARES? that doesn't mean it was incorrect. totally irrelevant.

Please pick up a African American history book and see if I am "nitpicking". These were major differences. A slave could still be identified, a gay person had the chance to completly avoid persecution in most cases. You should care about what others had to sacrifice, you make silly comparisons about shirts, I'm talking ass whippings, kids being burned alive in churches, and cold blooded murders that blacks received.

All that I was saying is that Cenk should have not brought up the hardships of Blacks to make his argument. He could have made the case for same sex marriage without making false comparisons. I know Cenk did not metion slavery I did not say he did. Did you watch the damn video? He makes comparisons to blacks during segregation. How blacks could not drink at the same fountain or attend the same school Whites. Last time I checked there has never been a gay and straight fountain or a straights only school. I was saying his comparsion is false, there is discrimination against gays but it should not be compared to the civil rights era, thats my opinion, get over it.

He was drawing comparisons between the struggles of blacks in the past to the struggles of gays now. I disagree with that comparison BECAUSE GAYS NEVER HAD TO GO ENDURE THOSE THINGS. When people compare things, they are usually relevant to the subject matter. Cenk was pointing out Santorum's bigotry to gays in the same video he compared it to the bigotry towards blacks. I dont think he should have, how am I off topic? I am directly challenging his view. You can disagree, but you cant say I'm off subject.

@1corpoaratekochwhore Because it's completely comparable to the bigotry towards blacks in the situations like basic rights such as marriage and using a water fountain. It *WOULD* be different if he compared it to being a slave, being 3/5ths a person or being whipped. THEN you would have a point. But saying they "went through a harder time" has nothing to do with the comparison of not using a certain type of water fountain to getting married. The levels of overall bigotry isn't even the issue.

You dont get it. We live in a much more socially liberal society now. Gays dont face the same problems as Blacks did. Its not about the extent or saying who had it harder. Not being able to marry someone is not the same as racial discrimination and violence. His comparison is false. It is not the same thing.

That is NOT going to affect the validity of his comparison.at all. No one SAID its the same thing, that's why it's a *COMPARISON*. Comparisons do not have to be exactly the same. The correlation between the two are that they are BOTH prejudices. That's the point. His comparison is not false. That is an incorrect statement.

It is different to deny two men or women the right to marry and denying Blacks acces to things It is not fair to compare someone who denies marriage to Gays to those bigoted southern politicians in the South. You can THINK it's a false comparison, but it's not. It is completely fair. When it comes down to it, it sounds like you just want to be politically correct. If being PC is the issue, then that's your problem, no one else's. Saying "They had a harder time" has absolutely nothing to do with the actual comparison we're talking about..

You have problems accepting that, why dont you get over it. Santorum is not the modern day Bull Connor. In my opinion these are two issues that should not be looked at in the same context at all. We disagree. I dont think those issues are on the same levels or be compared. Violence, racial discrimination, and institutional racism is not at all alike denying marriage license. Not having a marriage license does not harm you. You are not changing my mind so let it go and agree to disagree.

Sure it does. What if you want to transfer property to your partner? for a spouse, super easy. For a same sex couple, much more complicated.
What if you want to adopt a child together? In many states it's impossible w/o being married.
What if you want to file joint taxes for the marriage benefits. Can't do it, so you are financially harmed.
