@tvaughan807 No matter who gets the first place in European Championships or elsewhere, Black Dyke is still Black Dyke. And that's why they are amazing!
I'll admit that as a bass player I don't like PLC but he is a very good composer it's such a shame he doesn't realise that basses can play moving parts.
you must read something on his website about the dark site of the moon, the dificult of the test piece, is to make it nice to listen to it for te people.
The grenadiers had it arranged for full concert band though. A few days later I had the privelige to play with them in the horn section attempting the first parts as they did a workshop with my school band... I'm about grade 7 standard but this is one hell of a blow... took me all day to master the beginning!
This. Band. Is. Amazing.
This. Piece. Is. Amazing.
Disagree? Well go F yourself because what you say won't change my opinion!
I've seen the band of the Grenadier Guards play this in St. Andrew's Hall in Norwich... I was lost for words. Later on in the concert the 1st Euphonium player came out and did a fantasia finishing on a note 3 or 4 octaves above his middle C. Just shows the sort of quality of Euphonium player you need to play this!
my youth brass band played this recently. My gosh is the euphonium part hard. It takes practice to hit all the notes at full speed. It's a great piece but the euphoniums fast notes are only an effect
Is it just me or would anyone else love to be in Richard Marshall's shoes between 3:01 and 3:17? Peter Roberts doesn't quite plant the high C sharp / F sharp in the first solo, but my God, he more than makes up for it with that fantastic, totally in-tune top C / top F at 3:05.
Seems to be a popular piece with sally army as well. played it at yorkshire music school last sept! Playing it with e.y.m.s on sat, should be good. hopefully. Glad i don't have the euph part!
Owch, you have my sympathy. that 2nd/3rd cornet and glock part near the beginnings a killer... especially on your first time playing glock!!! Oh its a laugh! if i had that euph part i think i'd just hit the valves and hope!!
thnx. i alredy do tht sumtimes. in reahearsels wen the euphs were playin tht bit we were restin nd we lost count more than once from watching them playin it. but then agen they were guna b gd coz one of them was derrick kanes son
sorry, my english is not so good. i saw that i wrote: "did you you riverdance" in my comment. my question is if you heared the riverdance played by the ybs band.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I prefer the Brighouse and Rastrick Version from Brass In Concert. I've got this on CD in my car and whilst it is very well played, I do think that Brighouse have a slightly crisper sound, and the Euphs are a lot clearer in that too. Good piece though I love it!
I forgot to mention that I am listening to the Black Dyke version in the studio at work and my car and it's CD quality. I was comparing the CD to the DVD of Brighouse which is basically the same sort of quality
you re in right, black dyke versions of different songs are not always the best. did you you riverdance played by the yorkshire building society band? their version is much better than the version of the black dyke band. YBS makes very good recordings!!! but i have to say again, that where eagles sing is masterwork. i love the tam tam in this song really and the timpanis. we play this song at the minute in our band. paul lovatt- cooper is a great composer and a great drummer too.
It was written for them by their own percussionist. I'm sure that's how fast it was supposed to be played. And yes, Peter Roberts owns. What a loss to the band world.
I love it at 2:55 when Peter Roberts shuffles his chair in preparation for those incredible notes at 3:05. Poor Richard Marshall must have his hair permanently back parted.
Wow, great sound. The only thing I'm not convinced 100% on is the tempo they take right after the short intro. Seems a bit frantic to me. Could be the quality of the recording. Amazing band though, gese.
Must brag about that I´ve been one of the few thats been honored with playing in this great bands bandroom conducted by Nicolas. Not playing with Black dyke but the now gone Gothenburg brassband and I must say it was an amazing experience.
Wish I could meet them again and listen to their fantastic playing.

Sounds like you could do better... whats your name? Sparke, Wilby, Graham?
And above all, it's the amazing performance of the band that makes it worth listening (and not the composition itself)
thedust86 3 years ago
Do you think Sparke, Wilby or Graham would post like I did on Youtube? Stupid statement cheese boy.
I can do better. Want proof? Ask your mum. Shit, I bet that even YOU could do better than this :-)

I feel Brighouses' sound may be crisper, because of the cd being a professional recording and this obviously isn't.
