Arthur is close to 8 when he finds out he needed glasses. He celebrated his 8th birthday later on in season 1. During the episode of "Arthur's New Years Eve", DW mentions being 3 years younger than him (and in a much later episode, she celebrates her 5th birthday, so she's at least 4 1/2 at the time of Arthur's 8th birthday).

First off, the hairdresser lady is like 'you will wake up as the girl of your dreams' and when she's having her dream, notice Arthur is the only other guy on the field? And when Francine asks Arthur whether he likes her hair, he starts stammering like he doesn't want to hurt her feelings.

And at the end they TRADE PICTURES?! That must have been fun to explain to their parents!
