PoeticJustice05. Here is my take on Vinnie. yes, he has played with just about everyone, but I don't see that many classic recordings that I was that impressed with what he was doing. Sometimes he plays very safe, but I just ain't digging everything he has done. yes, I like some of the stuff with sting, but I equally like Manu and Copeland. To me, Vinnie doesn't stand out as much as other drummers like Williams, Cobham, White, Narada, Gadd and others that have a VERY distinguishable style.
This sounds like smooth jazz. decent players, but the song isn't that special. they are all playing fairly safe, commercialized music. too bad these players have to br involved with commercialied go make a living.
@Oneness100 decent players? Vinnie Colaiuta is probably the best drummer to have ever lived. He makes his living playing everything, not just commercialized music. He's played with everyone from Frank Zappa to Sting to Megadeth to Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. You really don't know what you're talking about.
He's playing Trumpet and Keyboard at the same time... He's playing the Trumpet and a Keyboard at the same time... He's a man, and he's multi-tasking... My mind doesn't seem to be able to digest the concept!
Listen to Vinnie doing "Humpty Dumpty" with Chick Corea, then driving the Buddy Rich Big Band, then wailing through "Stratus" with Jeff Beck, and come back listen to this masterful backbeat -then dare to say he's not one of the best drummers in the history of the instrument!
I realy like Vinnie alot and I have found a good clip here at youtube were Vinnie is playing drums on the michael jackson cover "the way you make me feel" with Paul Anka and a big band.
The way Vinnie is leading the band in the band shout in the middle of the song is amazing.
Thanks for the Paul Anka prize. Vinnie just plays so beautiful and unique. Didn't see the video but could tell it was Vinnie by his sound. Smoking!!!!!!
@NicholasFoti i actually first saw this on BET when it original aired in the 90's and vinnie's playing is still as fresh as it was when i first saw this clip.
I love this clip because the fugal horn player is playing keys at the same time...very "guffman" of him.
Vinnie is amazing because in one week he played with Faith Hill, Sting, and Megadeth. I don't know of any drummer that can do that and sound authentic.
Hey, there`s nothing wrong with having an opinion! I know what you mean - I can hear it laying right on the back of the beat too. Jeff Pocaro used to do that to great effect! Vinnie is still one of my favourite drummers, where ever he chooses to put the back beat! Remember, Some people can`t hear it!
Why is he awesome? There's a really good answer to that question. If you go to vinniecolaiuta. com / articles / drummagazine03. aspx , you will be able to read a really awesome story from Steve Vai ! (Sorry, I would post the u r l, but my comment doesn't appear if it has any special characters???)

Well "caterito" you are considered pretty awesome when you have had over 1000 people pay you to perform on their records. As for jazz, there's more than one way to swing. Blakey was different from Tony, who was different from Buddy or Elvin, etc. Which is the right way, then?
