I frequently read the biography of famous scientists. I really appreciate the fact that a lot of them were humble human beings who worked really hard (with some luck) to achieve success. It's not about superficial grades or trophies, it's about an endless curiosity to understand the natural world. Pure and simple.
That is why they devoted most of their lives in studying and researching. Some of them, like Newton, never "retired".
