@danwat1234 Most of them don't have dynamic breaking with a regenerative feature with the exception of the Acela. All of the engines used in passenger service do have dynamic breaking which for the most part is computer controlled including the MU sets. A few of the alps you can manually used the Dynamic break just keep in mind though it has to be used correctly or it just be like using the independent break causing the cars to run into the Engine.
@Lautico When running cab car out can;t think of any equipment to where the controller allows you to dynamic break from the cab car similar to effect I listed above again instead of cars running into the engine when the dynamic break kicks in it's like throwing a anchor out the window which would yanks the cars back. As an Engineer you get used to how handle your train to make it run smooth, if you care that is. All equipment acts differently though even same set running from another end changes
I dont get it......I mean you swing a cab ride and are allowed to film...so you focus on the SPEEDO? I mean common dude....shoot the footage. The front view footage we all want to see.Save the engineer stuff under engineer video title. Then we could watch that for what it is and not cab ride footage.
I hope to upgrade my bus driving to train driving. But I'm just as interested in conductor work. It's all the same but trains are generally better working conditions.
@BentraxVideos I should clarify , they don;t allow Engines to run in Diesel mode because of the fumes. Some of Amtraks Engines are dual mode they run electric in PENN until they hop on the Empire Line. The NJT AC Express also has diesel but it's off and basically used as cab car with and ALP on the hind end pushing until they get to Shore Interlocking and switch over to diesel.
@Lautico I suspect this will change with the introduction of the ALP45DP(A new dual mode supposedly high tech blah blah I'm sure I'll have numerous headaches with all the computerized crap they threw on it) if it hasn't already.
@P40BH I can't help to laugh at this statement besides the fact that the speed is limited to Restricted Speed not exceeding 15MPH within PENN Station. (Not that I recommend you go that fast unless you see string of "Clear Signals" even at that not wise)
What you guys don't realize is the amount of signals all over the place and how close they're to one another in some case less than a half car length. You have to watch how you're aligned and make sure you have the signals. (obscure signals)
This video could be risking the engineer's job. They can find out when by the cab # which can be seen on the brake plate, or the date or any passing trains. Although up to you, removing this may just be the best idea. good video besides that.
@GSXRMark99 Not sure, I know if you go over the speed limit restriction it goes off, but also you have the dead man switch. If adding sand it makes the same noise. I am sure after while you get used to it.
@SuperStarRendon The arrows have the deadman pedal, and the newer equipment has an alerter switch. There are also alarms for wheelslip and speed change. Wheelslip alarms are very common in the fall due to the oil from fallen leaves.
@GSXRMark99 you're probably reffering to the alerter, it's a safety feature on now every locomotive and cab car. The alerter will automatically sound and an engineer/conductor would press it or apply any other controls. If a crew member doesn't do anything in 10 seconds, a emergency message will be sent to the dispatcher
@GSXRMark99 It's either the alerter aka deadman, or Cab signal enforcing a slower or more restrictive speed/signal aspect and your required to acknowledge, by the looks his speed is kinda slow, and the sander doesnt make any noise only indicator light. maybe a slight hiss..and no emergency message is sent a penalty application is incurred. reset it and go...
Whoa, nice. I didn't think I would find this that entertaining - I used to ride from NYP out to New Brunswick a lot in the recent past when Arrow IIIs ruled the NEC. Cool upload, dude. Those guys have some sweet jobs.
@anomalousclouds Funny, but most conductor just do it because it's a job, not for the passion. I heard from many engineers, they don't even like trains but it's a job to pay the bills.
Wow you got very lucky there! 5 stars! Actually where you were standing the audio would be great for models and games. On Metro-North I've gotten pretty lucky many times because MN has a lot of engineers and conductors who like railfanners.
@GenesisSanctuary you have to be careful about that, it's very easy to get an engineer in trouble. you wouldn't be able to give equipment #s or anything to the public. Transit is smart and they can find out.
Great video. I rode in one of those babies once, except it was on the Main Line to Suffern. I did a shave and a haircut sometimes.

Hmm, so that train doesn't have regenerative braking? Doesn't look like the engineer is using it if the train does have it. Be green!

how old do you have to be to drive any of these commuter rail trains

@nichols15 On the Music City Star here in TN you have to be 18. Some railroads may require you to be 21 however.

Great vid! Very interesting to see how the driver operates the train from the cab car.
Do the controls in the locomotive actually move when he moves the controls in the cab car, or is it all electronic?

Not much to see except the operators hands. An ocassional front shot, with most of the time spent on the operators hand controls was a poor choice.
