The ideal height of a fighting man is between 5 ft 10 and 6 ft 2, 6 feet being optimal. Boxing, MMA, you name it, most of the best fighters are around 6 feet in stature, +/-. Occasionally a real giant will be found who is proportionally strong to his height, but many tall men do not have strength in proportion to their height.
Often sports commentators will speak of Tyson as short, when Tyson is actually taller than the average American man. He is 5 ft 11, the average man in America is about 5 ft 10 inches.
i'm 17. 5 foot 6 inches. done growing, and i'm the most ruthless fighter i know. i lost when got my arm broken by a 14 year old when i was 11, when i got my ass beat by a 15 year old when i was 11, and when i was robbed and jumped by 4 kids including my "best friend" at 13. i've won many many many fights and never backed down. but after getting a felony at 16 for breaking someones nose who stole my phone, whats it worth? my life is ruined. avoid fights but never be afraid to defend yourself. evr
@justindecipherable Hi dude, your coment was very inspiring man, i myself can not be considered a violent guy, nor even a fighter, i have avoided so many fights but when the switch turns ON the other guy is just fuck´d up, that is the way i am, lol im kinda the passive-agressive type of dude... anyways good lucks on your life
@primeminister87 Yeah well you're 5'6. Tyson was 5'11, you may be short but he's not. In the heavyweight division he is short compared to other heavyweights, but in general he's above average height.
He was like a pit bull, shorter stature but stocky muscular build. Mesomorphic builds often have an advantage when it comes to certain sports. He could generate amazing power through his legs which would explode through his hands. Like he said, he gained great leverage due to his low centre of gravity. Technique wise, he was the greatest boxer ever.
dnt know about you im 1 m 97 cm tall weight 120 kg boxing ofc
let me tell u being small has its advantages when u fight a tall guy like me all ur punches become like upercuts bcz ur hittin upward and i have to hit downward so pure math :) (some will understand)
I think Tyson is about 5'9.5 to 5'10. I saw a photo where he doesn't look much taller than Rooney (it's the one where he's with a young Lennox). He wasn't a small guy in the conventional sense but in the heavyweight division he was pretty small. Consider that Joe Louis was 6'2 and the Klitschkos are skyscapers. Tyson was basically a mini-tank. In a strange way the fighter he was closest was Rocky, not in style but approach. Small guy, built like a tank, punch like a mule.
about ft11 being average, well in the US its two fucking inches above the average 5ft9, so statistically, if you're 5ft11, you are on the taller side although may appear somewhat average.
if he stand right against/near the height measure wall he could possibly reach a strong 5ft10 or 5ft10.5 just below 5ft11. Notice how he at 0:37 stand a bit in front of the height measure wall, making him closer to the camera = making him taller.
Being short isn't an advantage ...but it gives you an edge in the sense that you see a lot of tall guys get opportunities you didn't get and you get to punch them in the face. Bigger they are the harder they fall.
I'm 5'8, wanna be 5'10 but thats not gonna happen. Tyson was short for the heavyweight division but was a good strong average hight. 5'8 - 5'11 = average for man. Mike says he is 5'10 now, i think he was just about 5'11 but looked closer to 5'10 because of the squarishness to his build.
Boxing is design for short faster quick agile people, who thinks otherwise only relies on their physical endurance, instead of boxing habilities...Today´s worldwide known boxers are the ones that have 5´6 to 5´8 ft or so,enough said...
Yeah but you lost it mentally Tyson- all your boxing skills counts for nothing when you disgraced yourself in so many other ways- life ain't all about knocking the hell out of people.
Mike`s lack of height definitely worked for him, If he was 6 feet or taller he would have never been able to adopt that style of fighting that worked so well for him. But by the same token if he was any shorter say like 5`9 or less it probably wouldn`t have worked for him because you still need a certain amount of reach to connect a good head shot on a guy 6`3 or 6`4
well im 15 yrs im thaiboxing for 9 years im 1.70 57kg and i know height is nothing in a fight what counts is speed quick moving power and mental i got 15 matches 13 wins 1 loss 1 draw and im always the shortest so dont be stupid to think of yourself your samll and useless just train to be a machine
@toby099 actually tyson is more of 5'9 1/2 or mabye 5'10 even. when tyson was on wwf raw in 98 he stood face to face with shawn micheals who is 5'11-6'0 and tyson was atleast 2-3 inches shorter(plus both of them had on boots)
@52suave You're would rather trust a video of two guys wearing boots, from a distance, and GUESS that there was a 2-3 inch difference... than trust this video where he has an official measuring board behind him, that clearly shows he's around 5'11"? Crazy.

@likeomgutube haha well it actually, same thing ali, he was what 215?? max, im not a pro, im 19 6'3 205 ibs, so yeah as a person no its kinda tall but compare him to lennox, foreman, it is kinda small.

You didn't need to bring up that "it's short for guys who are 6 feet tall". At 5ft10 you're very well balanced, not too short and not too tall.
@MarcianoMarcel haha obvious trolling, since there is no evidence at all a 9 foot tall person ever lived. Saying it again, in case you didn't get it: Robert Wadlow was the tallest man at 8ft11, allmost 9ft.
Im sorry to tell u, you are not ur dad's son, your dad is a faggot, you are the son of the bus driver, or the milk man, or maybe the train engineer since they ran a train on ur mom lol.
@likeomgutube yea but when you watch Mike's fights, most of his opponents were taller in height than he was especially for a heavyweight. some examples: donnie long, james "quick" tillis, lorenzo canady, bonecrusher smith, evander holyfield, and the list goes on and on. for the average male though he was fairly decent height
Remember Tyson was seen as short because he was always seen in comparison to the height of all heavyweight fighters, most of which were 6ft2 +
I still see tyson taller than alotta people when he stands next to them.
Tyson (being 5'10 and using those shoes that he had) probably gave him a little boost.
Nothing wrong with being short, but I don't see an abudance of fighters shorter than 5'9 in heavyweight that are successful, and I mean this with no offence intended.. heavyweights are tall!
Guys, I just met Tyson and got pics with him and gloves signed b4 the Mayweather vs Ortiz fight. I am 5'9 180 lbs and had boots on. Mike had sneakers on but was slouching a little. Check out my profile pic. He is definately 5'11, but always looked shorter bc how wide he was. He has lost alot of weight, but his head and neck are still huge. Could not imagine seeing him in his prime. He was huge. Looks nothing at all like the old Mike. HARD TO BELIEVE THE CHANGE..PEACE !@
naaa, he meant he was below the average of the standard heavyweight fighter, but even shorter than his 5'10", he still would have kick ass the way he did. His skills, training, courage and rage where about 10 ft tall
Audie Murphy was only 5' 5", yet he is the most decorated WWII soldiers ever. Just google and find out how he got his Medal of Honor, not mention the prolific movie career he spawned after. Without the 'inclination' - he might not have had the same huge motivation.
Height elitism is stupid. Look at some of the worlds most renowned leaders, though not to everyones liking; they stand at 5' 0 - 5' 6" : Lenin, Putin, Medvedev, Sarkozy, Berlusconi, Merkel
@GuerreroDelInfo no they dont overlook you. they just dont expect you to say anything because they assume youre intimidated. go up to her and she wont care.
they are just stirring things up...that's not short...I know someone who's 5-10 and he's just as tall if not a bit taller than most people walking at the store or casino
he said he was 5-10 and 5-10 isn't really short....some people describe 5-10 as "about 6 foot" about 6 foot which is generally considered tall or at least taller than average....a lot of people can't really tell at first glance between the two
@123shiti Anything is possible. Yoga and swimming, anything healthy for your vertabrae, joints, and ligaments help with posture and hence with height.
@Z3koD3vo no thats not to shot sure the shortist heavywightchape was only 5.7 at 175 and i thing the shortist one was 56 so if they can do it why cant u just as mike said belive in yaself and yal get there
@Z3koD3vo u r not too short. to fight has heavyweigh. if u r really 200lbs and are in condition. im 5'8 but only 166lbs, i wanna be heavyweight. we'll have to fight like a frazier or tyson and crush them big tall fuckers. the heavyweights today are too big i think, there boring. the smaller, lighter heavyweights should come back around again soon. 5'8 - 6'0 - 6'3 great but not these 6'6 - 6'9 mass of boring slow crap.
@MrTriggz13 eat healthier, more uncooked veggies and fruits, eat meats that don't aren't treated with hormones and steroids. Take herbs like Maca, Tongkat Ali and other ones that boost testosterone. There are also exersizes and stretches that can if done properly can add 1-3 inches in height for you. Chinese people use these exersizes and they apparently help!
@MrTriggz13 i belive you do as long as you stay away from smoking and drinking as they both stunt your growth. im 5'8, 22, so my only chance is to just stretch, and good posture lol.
this vid+mike tyson is inspirational, i felt short because most of my freinds are 6' - 6'2 etc, my dad is 6'1, my bro is 6'0. but im 17, 6months till im 18 and im 5'10. mike tyson fighting much larger oppenents because of his size has made me feel confident, also the mark twain quote “It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.” has made me feel better about my height and im not intimidated anymore by bigger people
@DuskfallBand There is an oriental school of thought: "With every strength there is a weakness and with every weakness there is a strength". Find your stengths and capitalize on them.
Tyson's maybe just a little above average height for light-heavy. Imagine if he had dropped to that, even just down to cruiserweight.. He would have won alot more titles! The name jones junior wouldn't ring any bells lol
@gregm20072007 it's my opinion...and everybody here agree with me except you and that mmacl4ny bastard...dr.steelhammer rules the world of boxing did you see haye he was crying like mikey
@globalplayer1988 I know but time has a habit of changing peoples memories, but you must remember, he was 35-0 with 31 knockouts with Kevin Rooney in his corner. Then he left Rooney, had two fights, now under don king, and then there was the Douglas fight. Before that, mike had never even been rocked in a fight, or shown any sign of hurt, although some say Bruno hurt him, but then that was the first fight after had left Rooney...
@ILUVJEZUZ94 That's not true, it's just a romantic way of looking at something. At the highest levels of any profession, it's all about talent. Despite his height "disadvantage", Tyson is one of the most talented boxers the world has ever seen. Yes he was very focused and worked hard, especially pre-Robin Givens/Don King, but this guy had probably the greatest combination of power & quickness boxing has ever seen and that's not something you get with just training, it's genetic.
@jrr0385, Lots of people are genetically gifted, and most simply become average people, so I'd say Tyson's success was largely through his own hard work rather than genetics.
just shows its not all about height tyson is about 5ft 10-11 and he knocks out men 6ft 3-4 not the size but its in the mind

it's not short by any means, it's average/medium/ tallish in some countrys and below average in other countries...
a legit 5'10" can look 6ft to the average people who don't care much about height, and he can claim that he's 6 foot without anybody knowing.

Tyson had so much potential. His failure to overcome his demons and really become what he was capable of is one of sport's most tragic stories.

Tyson these days is a weak 5'10
BallisticBrawler 3 months ago
:o ... Tyson's 178/179 cm?
That's not right, that can't be right?
My BMI got measured at college last week and I'm 179.
And I know FOR SURE I'm taller than Tyson is atm, 179 is 5'11 something right?
Others keep telling me it's 5'10 something but there's no way I'm in the 5'10 range anymore.. can someone tell me what 179cm REALLY is in foot?
(It says 5.9 but that's not 5''9 it's 5.9 ... meaning one more would be 6.0) So I should be 5'11 something right?

Remember Tyson was seen as short because he was always seen in comparison to the height of all heavyweight fighters, most of which were 6ft2 +
I still see tyson taller than alotta people when he stands next to them.
Tyson (being 5'10 and using those shoes that he had) probably gave him a little boost.
Nothing wrong with being short, but I don't see an abudance of fighters shorter than 5'9 in heavyweight that are successful, and I mean this with no offence intended.. heavyweights are tall!
GodOnStrike 3 months ago
Guys, I just met Tyson and got pics with him and gloves signed b4 the Mayweather vs Ortiz fight. I am 5'9 180 lbs and had boots on. Mike had sneakers on but was slouching a little. Check out my profile pic. He is definately 5'11, but always looked shorter bc how wide he was. He has lost alot of weight, but his head and neck are still huge. Could not imagine seeing him in his prime. He was huge. Looks nothing at all like the old Mike. HARD TO BELIEVE THE CHANGE..PEACE !@
LUKE82603 3 months ago
Ppl say he could've beaten Ali but he couldnt beat Buster, he is still in the top 10 of greatest heavy weight imo

damn, 5"10 ? He is really short..
Ninodalix 4 months ago
naaa, he meant he was below the average of the standard heavyweight fighter, but even shorter than his 5'10", he still would have kick ass the way he did. His skills, training, courage and rage where about 10 ft tall
jcgax70 4 months ago 20
why are people who are 5ft8 complaining? how does Justin bieber feel at 5ft 4 xD
Just keep your head up you 5ft 8 - 5ft 10ers and be happy you aren't a midget.
Lamefunday 4 months ago
Audie Murphy was only 5' 5", yet he is the most decorated WWII soldiers ever. Just google and find out how he got his Medal of Honor, not mention the prolific movie career he spawned after. Without the 'inclination' - he might not have had the same huge motivation.
Height elitism is stupid. Look at some of the worlds most renowned leaders, though not to everyones liking; they stand at 5' 0 - 5' 6" : Lenin, Putin, Medvedev, Sarkozy, Berlusconi, Merkel
It's down to the size of your soul!

they are just stirring things up...that's not short...I know someone who's 5-10 and he's just as tall if not a bit taller than most people walking at the store or casino
JasonBourne342 4 months ago
he said he was 5-10 and 5-10 isn't really short....some people describe 5-10 as "about 6 foot" about 6 foot which is generally considered tall or at least taller than average....a lot of people can't really tell at first glance between the two

hashead19 4 months ago
@Z3koD3vo u r not too short. to fight has heavyweigh. if u r really 200lbs and are in condition. im 5'8 but only 166lbs, i wanna be heavyweight. we'll have to fight like a frazier or tyson and crush them big tall fuckers. the heavyweights today are too big i think, there boring. the smaller, lighter heavyweights should come back around again soon. 5'8 - 6'0 - 6'3 great but not these 6'6 - 6'9 mass of boring slow crap.

MrTriggz13 5 months ago
@MrTriggz13 eat healthier, more uncooked veggies and fruits, eat meats that don't aren't treated with hormones and steroids. Take herbs like Maca, Tongkat Ali and other ones that boost testosterone. There are also exersizes and stretches that can if done properly can add 1-3 inches in height for you. Chinese people use these exersizes and they apparently help!
tfrenn 5 months ago
@MrTriggz13 i belive you do as long as you stay away from smoking and drinking as they both stunt your growth. im 5'8, 22, so my only chance is to just stretch, and good posture lol.

globalplayer1988 5 months ago
@globalplayer1988 I know but time has a habit of changing peoples memories, but you must remember, he was 35-0 with 31 knockouts with Kevin Rooney in his corner. Then he left Rooney, had two fights, now under don king, and then there was the Douglas fight. Before that, mike had never even been rocked in a fight, or shown any sign of hurt, although some say Bruno hurt him, but then that was the first fight after had left Rooney...

ILUVJEZUZ94 6 months ago 29
@ILUVJEZUZ94 That's not true, it's just a romantic way of looking at something. At the highest levels of any profession, it's all about talent. Despite his height "disadvantage", Tyson is one of the most talented boxers the world has ever seen. Yes he was very focused and worked hard, especially pre-Robin Givens/Don King, but this guy had probably the greatest combination of power & quickness boxing has ever seen and that's not something you get with just training, it's genetic.
jrr0385 3 months ago
@jrr0385, Lots of people are genetically gifted, and most simply become average people, so I'd say Tyson's success was largely through his own hard work rather than genetics.

TheBadassmf 6 months ago
What's all this about being short? 5'11 is hardly short!
Weston1968 6 months ago
The measuring is innacurate I guess.. I'd only say that because he isn't directly up against it. Even though it said 5'11 w,e..
However he was recorded at that (5'11.5) for matches
HE SAID he was 5'10
And incase people didn't know he also wore shoes with those lifted heels on them w,e they were.
Fair enough if his NATURAL height was 5'10, but in a match with those shoes (black short ones? idk) he was probably 5'11/5'11 1/2.
Why would people bullshit?
Those saying 5'6-5'9 stop commenting.
