interveiwer is retarded asks srv if he was influenced by merseybeat srv says wtfs merseybeat i think srv was more influenced by the early blues guys likee buddy guy bb king hendrix clapton etc merseybeat hahaha wtf
@makerof1 Yes, after a time the neck would start to warp, as would any guitar. Stevie used jumbo style frets which helped the neck, but I would imagine that he had the relief reset fairly often. This simply involves clamping the neck in a jig and applying upward force to the center creating a "hill" that when string tension is applied will render the neck in a straight state. You could also use stiffening rods to help the neck stay straight over time.
Here's a little snipet of info that will put this video in perspective. I read that he uses .013 to .063 strings on his Strat. If your a guitar player, then you know how heavy those are. For him to play this fast, this cleanly and with such articulation using "ship towing cables" is really phenom. His fingers and hands have to be very strong. And to play all night...whew! It strains my mind.
@sixstringfretter He used 13-52, tuned down a half note. I play a 7 string tuned down a half note and the 7th is a 56. I don't think you could even fit a 63 on a 6 string without filing down the groove on the nut.
Go to the SRV WIki page. Near the bottom, there is an article about his strings. It states he sometimes uses strings "as thick as barbed wire", sometimes .018 to .074 It also states he uses .013 to .056 tuned down half a step. So, yes, you are right, but so am I. Read it, it is a very well done peice about the greatest bluesman we have known!
I was in 6th grade. my birthday is August 30th. I was a "bad" kid so I was sent to Mr. Briese. He was the hard ass teacher. He came to class that morning and said "I don't know if you know who SRV is, but he died this morning in a crash" I started balling. He excused me to the bathroom. He was surprised I even knew who he was. It was a very cool moment for me and Mr. B too. Music is so important. Everyone can share it and love it.
@bluessiren78 Hey man, that is fugkin really cool that you remember that moment. I am 43 and have been playing since 1977.I woke up in the late afternoon,a rainy day here in NY,and walked into the kitchen with a hangover from hell, and a note on the table said "Mom,Eric is ok,but SRV died"--from my little sister to my mom. I fuckin wanted to throw the table through the window! My love for SRV is all over my #1 Strat---beaten -bashed .22cal. rounds in it,stickers all over the axe! RIP,SRV&Jimi!
@bluessiren78 Bro, I hear ya loud and clear!.Iam a bit older-43 and have been playing since 1977.I woke up on a late afternoon ,with a mother*&^% hangover.Anote on the kitchen table -"Mom Eric is ok,but SRV died" my lil sister wrote it(mom a Clapton freak) I wanted to throw the table through the window! @move276 You younger guys-- Keep it up!! Bring Rock Back-Us older dudes never had any "tab" shit to show tou where the notes on the fretboard to hit, and tab gives you no feel. you are a robot! you want to play an EVH solo? here is the tab from guitar player(half of is wrong anyway) Wa learned by listening 100x on cassette or record, and at the same time built up chops and timing and a good ear! And a shuffle beat is a shuffle beat,no matter how ya slice it! Its a 4/4 beat-simple, find the POP!
@biker5211 Stevie didnt use texas specials mate, his signature model has them but he didnt use texas specials, cant remember what he used though. Any sorta vintage pickups will do tbh, i use lindy fralin blues specials and they do fine
@qlino1313 Stevie didnt use texas specials mate, his signature model has them but he didnt use texas specials, cant remember what he used though. Any sorta vintage pickups will do tbh, i use lindy fralin blues specials and they do fine
that dude is SUPER LUCKY to have met Stevie, and gave a 'personal taste of his amazing guitar playing', I would have loved to met Stevie Ray, his playing skill is the best, when someone asks me how fast or moving blues can be, I always say "put in youtube Stevie Ray Vaughan and you'll see"
Yeah, i used .013 before.. but now i'm using .012.. i found a good way to use big strings on a rosewood fretboard, you simply take a piece of coarse sandpaper and cut into the fretboard so you get kind of a scalopped feel to it. but not as curved as scalloped fretboards. cause when you look at the fender custom shop video where they're looking at srv's #1, you can see that the fretboard is curved.
You can really tell that he is using huuuge strings here! You can see that the strings are barely moving when he is hitting them, and when he is poppung the last E on rude mood, the string is really firm.
I think he was quite possibly one of the fastest players in the world. Not that playing "fast" matters...but in his blues style, it's super fast. He blows the "shredders" of today away, while still keeping all focus on the good sound and not even focusing on speed, other than for him rhythm. If I remember correctly, this song is a blistering 250+ beats per minute. Even to the modern day "shredders" (which I dislike), that's considered "Super shred" above 220. This is pure genius and skill.
@jmr1068204 no, he doesn't. Stevie was fast. But comparing him to a neoclassical player like Yngwie or a newcomer like Alexi Laiho isn't even fair. Not only are they playing totally different styles, but eurometal is a totally different standard of technical skill compared to pentatonic blues licks. No disrespect to Stevie, but keep different sports separate.
@guitarthroat Exactly. Steve was fast, in blues terms. But compare him to people like Vai, Broderick, Yngwie, people like that, and it's not even fair. But with Stevie's fast, he knew how to mix it in and not make it boring, tasteful!!
this guy made history goes to show what hard work can do even in a time blues was unpopular and mike jackson was in this gy wasnt near his peak if he wold have lived he would have been the best he was amazing and not one guy today or perhaps ever can do what he can ive spent many hours trying but hey to bad he died rip man
stevie is not even on the same plane as ..say the jonas homos- man... i swear were on a dif planet w this gay "pop' shit these days ...armegedon? ur table is ready...
Maybe the greats die before they would crash else where. Meaning, maybe he died at the peak of his career and if he would have survived he might have self destructed....destroying himself. I dont really know. Its just a thought. Long Live SRV!!!
I don't know about that. Even the great Eric Clapton who shared Stevie's last jam stated "I don't think we have seen his finest hour." There are some that thought SRV played better high, to those people I say, listen to Riviera Paradise that last night at Alpine, or Pride & Joy. I saw him several times and he was on fire towards the end!
srv was and will always be up there as one of the greatest rock stars ever. people like him changed rock and roll and brought out something new. that my friends, is what I strive to achieve someday. maybe.
Just don't get clean, then die in a helicopter crash.
But in all seriousness, coming from somebody who's surrounded by alcoholics destroying their lives, I personally hope you overcome your addiction. Good luck dude.
i agree about that playing clapton better than clapton thing that was funny but true imagine that no eric this is how YOU do it thats how great stevie was as a matter of fact i believe he may have been the best a friend of mine was at his last show the thing i like is how laid back and ordinary he is when he talks no ego nothing just stevie i miss you bud wish you were still with us
You wanna know why srv was so good? cause he actually learned the basics. That's why there aren't anymore fantastic guitar players like him. Kids these days get a guitar and most likely the first thing they do is learn a basic riff like the one from Back in Black or something. What they don't do is look at the riff, analyze what it is and why it's that way. They don't learn scales, actual notes (most of them just read tabs), and they don't learn the MUSIC part. RIP Stevie.
Wow, I have been listening to him for years and never knew he had passed way back in 90. Damn, what a crying shame. If you ever have talent that the entire world really needs for inspiration, DONT ever get into a helicopter.....Damn! can you imagine how much more he could have done! Thank you SRV for what you gave us!
@definca i know its sad. think of all the songs that exist that were never wote from hendrix and stevie ray......awell at least we have what they gave us...and it sure as hell rocks!!
@BluesThor LOL. That's funny. Their used to be a running joke with his roadies that his brother mentioned in an interview after his passing that "With a little more wood, his guitars would make excelent pianos" strictly because of his exclusive use of the biggest strings he could fit on them.
Ken,solid as rock, what great execution of Ideas and everything in perfect timing, thanks for sending this interview, the honesty and purity of this man is where it's at. greets Vic.
TY for the awesome post! I used to have the VH1 documentary and loved it. Never seen this great interview before and love it as well. I'm so glad he got cleaned up and was playing better than ever again. I heard his last show at Alpine Valley Wisconsin smoked, in fact I read somewhere that out of all the acts, his guitar playing and performance blew everyone away and stood out the most. If anyone has a recording of that, please email me. SRV was a true larger than life person who died too young.
mabie the best BLUES guitarist in the world, but your talking about a time during joe satriani, yngwie malmsteen, chris impelliterri, steve vai and more,

Saw Clapton once, blew me away (and I play guitar). Wish I could have seen SRV too.

Here you can see he is using telephonecables as strings.. they are barely moving when he is punchin' them with his right hand!
BluesThor 1 year ago
@BluesThor LOL. That's funny. Their used to be a running joke with his roadies that his brother mentioned in an interview after his passing that "With a little more wood, his guitars would make excelent pianos" strictly because of his exclusive use of the biggest strings he could fit on them.

I have it, it IS epic! You can find it on torrent and his brother Jimmie put it out as an album.
