In 2008 reigning world champion Kimi Raikkonen moved over in Brazil to help Massa try and win the title.
Coulthard moved over in Australia 1998 to allow Hakkinen to win. McLaren knew they had a fast car. They finished '97 strongly and had a superb winter leading up to 1998. By making Coulthard move over in the very first race you can't deny they already had some sort of favouritsm planned or pre-planned agreement.
@thestaggie You can't compare this to Australia 1998. Häkkinen clearly was the stronger driver (he had pole and the fastest lap). Someone tapped with the radio and Mika got the order to enter the pits a 2nd time. While he cruised through the pitlane with the speed-limiter, Coulthard passed him. It was only fair that McLaren corrected their mistake and reinstated P1. And David really made life hard for Häkkinen on several occasions (see Austria 1999 or Spa 1999).
Okay, how about Europe 1997, final round of the season? After the Schumacher-Villeneuve incident, Coulthard & Hakkinen had been 2nd and 3rd. It was apparent that Villeneuve's car was damaged as the McLarens were realing him in. McLaren contacted Williams and asked Williams if Villenueve would surrender his position and not fight. They agreed, not wanting to risk further contact and losing the title. Once Villeneuve-Williams agreed, Coulthard was told to let Hakkinen through.
As you put it, ''David really made life hard for Hakkinen on several occasions'' is proof enough that there comes a time when a team has to choose a #1 driver. On both of those occasions David could have taken the both of them out, resulting in no victory for McLaren and losing the title to Irvine.
This happened to Williams in '86. They let Mansell & Piquet fight to the final round and Prost in his McLaren mugged the pair of them at the final race and took the championship.
Mansell only went to Williams in 1992 because he was assured of having a weaker teammate and he was the one that opted out of Williams in 1993 because they signed Prost.
Another juicy bit is that Senna wanted out of McLaren for 1993 because they were losing Honda power and had to make do with customer Ford units. Williams wanted to sign Senna for 1993 BUT, they had already signed Prost and Prost had a clause that blocked Williams from signing Senna while he was there.
If you don't have a clear #1, there comes a time in the season when you have to pick one. Example; McLaren and their butchered 2007 season. By letting Hamilton & Alonso race, Raikkonen robbed them at the last second.
Other non-Ferrari examples are Jordan telling Ralf to leave Hill alone at Belgium '98 after Hill went on the radio and warned the team he'll take the both of them out if he had to fight Ralf. Patrese openly admitted he was 2nd fiddle to Piquet at Brabham and would hand over wins.
Did you know Ayrton Senna blocked Lotus - when they were still capable of winning races - from signing Derek Warwick in 1986? Why? Warwick was a hugely talented driver and was seen as a ''coming man''. The result was Lotus signed Satoru Nakajima, a clearly inferior driver and no threat to Senna.
Every team has it's leader and if they don't, they risk losing out. In '99 Coulthard nearly sabotaged Hakkinen by racing him and punting him off.
@Hungary599 True, but I get the feeling that Ferrari were secretly praying that Irvine wouldn't be the one to win their first driver's title in 20 years!
Schumacher had to do the same. In 1999 at Sepang (Malaysia) when he made his comeback after he had broken his leg at Silverstone.
The German got the Pole in Malaysia and led comfortably, but he was ordered by Ferrari to let his teammate (Irvine) pass, who had yet chance for winning the title for Ferrari, profiting from Häkkinen's bad lucks. The Finnish drove for McLaren-Mercedes.
It started in Montreal 2000, Rubens wasn't allowed to win. He finished something like 0.157 behind Michael after having let him through or not try to overtake. And in parc ferme he said to Michael "Next time you will do it for me" or something like that.
@jockejocke1 - Yes. Schumi paid him back, he let Rubens win 3 races in 02 (Europe, Italy, USA) and 1 in 04 (Italy). Team orders have existed since the start of formula 1, if Rubens didn't like it why did he resign with ferrari not once, but twice and then start bitching about his time there when he left the team?
and this is how the "famous" 7 time world champion got most of his titles. what a fukin disgrace. a shameful way to win. a non talent. he should thank the gods ayrton died in 1994 cause if he was still alive he wouldnt have won fuk all
@cheleasulii "Most" of his 7 titles he won because his team mates let him win, even though they were faster? So, at least 4 titles he won that way then? Care to give me a few more examples of titles he won that way? (:
Also, this didnt decide the championship. He was allready far, far ahead.
@Keynwar Are you seriously suggesting JJ Lehto, Jos Verstappen, Johnny Herbert & Rubens Barrichello were faster than Schumacher?
For me, Michael didn't need the extra points in 01 or any other year.
As for a no.2 driver, if you sign the contract in the winter, you can't complain at the race in the summer. Research Ronnie Peterson in 1978 or Gilles Villeneuve in 1979. They were number 2 drivers who were blindingly quick but had honour.
Michael crapped on every teammate he had at every team he drove for. Your argument uses the (flawed) logic that the moment he put his Jordan-Ford 7th on the grid at Belgium on debut, outqualifying his vastly more experienced teammate (de Cesaris), he was benefitting from team orders or was cheating.
Massa was close and Rosberg is quicker because he has clearly slowed with age, which is natural, but a young Michael would have shattered them two as well.
Senna only drove for teams that could win once he left Lotus. He never built a team, only joined teams that would guarantee immediate success. He wanted out of McLaren when they lost Honda power in 1993 and was totally disinterested when they signed the works Peugeot deal for 1994, who were making their F1 debut. For your prophecy to ring true Senna would have had to have jumped teams to get the fastest possible car.
The video description and the people argueing are wrong. This is Austria 2001, but Barrichello was forced to let Schumacher past into second place, not first place. This is proven at 0:08, where the race positions come up and Coulthard is leading. In Austria 2002, Barrichello let Schumacher past again, and this time it was for the victory. In USA 2002, Schumacher accidently returned the favour and gave Barrichello the win, when he was trying to create a dead heat across the finish line.
People must remember that in a team there will always be a faster driver. In RBR, Vettel is faster than MW. Alonso is faster than Massa, etc. So you MUST elect a favored driver if you really wanna win the championship. It's like football.. it's 0-0 in the 90th minute and u get a penalty. Let's say its Liverpool. now who would take the kick? Gerrard "confirmed that'll goal" or give a chance to Andy Carroll just because he hasn't scored in EPL yet? Rubens was just unlucky to be sacrificed.
@develish16 Very true, except that when this happened it was virtually Schumachers title anyway. Although mathematically it was still possible he could lose it would've required an impossible series of events for that to happen. That was why it upset alot of people, it just wasn't neccessary. Schumacher himself was embarassed by the whole saga, and the looks he got from his own brother after race
@DamiKondi Senna would have went for the inside line, michael would have been stubborn and caused them both to crash out, points stay the same, Senna wins.
@Truwarier4 I seem to remember Berger pulling over for Senna a few times and senna paying him back at the end of the year and making it pretty obvious in the process
its a team sport yes. but forcing one of your drivers to allow another past is not very teamly. after all shouldnt they want BOTH drivers competing instead of michael scampering off into the distance while rubens held the pack up...
Barrichello had to let him win here, ordered by the boss. But in 2002 US Grand Prix Schumacher returned the favor and gave him back the win himself with a nice formation win right? So they're even :).
thats why i love the prost/senna years. they had team orders too then but both drivers just pissed on the orders and did it there own way. this is the same shit that got villeneuve killed in '82 after pironi ignored the team orders. just let the drivers race and let them sort it out among themselfs. and if Jean Todt wants to bann so many things (diffuser, f-duct) start with banning team orders instead of helping ferrari (the last thing they invented was the semi automatic gearbox in 1989).
If Todt gets his way all F1 cars will be fitted with Toyota Prius electric powered engines going round a track at a reckless speed of 30mph..... and if they crash they could always bring out the safety moped...
Do you guys think Jean Todt is using his position (President of FIA) to help Ferrari? Or is it just a coincidence? In 2010, McLaren had the F-Duct where the front wing can be adjusted. FIA then banned it in 2011. Then in 2011, halfway through the season, FIA decided to ban diffusers, the advantage of the Red Bull. Could Jean Todt have banned them because Ferrari couldn't think of any brilliant aerodynamic part?
@blackogen Agree with you, Although he is doing his job (In a shit way), he is trying to help out Ferrari, He did BAN the F-Duct (McLaren advantage) & tried to ban Blown Diffuser (RBR advantage). He's a joke.
Barrichello won 0 races in 2001. In this race Schumi got punted off by Montoya so he would have finished ahead of Rubens anyway.. Just shut up you stupid haters.
I wouldn't expect less, very likely coming from Ferrari. No honor, no respect. Jean Todt should had been banned from F1, as was Briatore as result of the Singapure incident. FIA is one of the most corrupt organizations I've ever seen.
I'm not sure there's anything wrong with what Jean Todt did. The bottom line is that it's Jean Todt's contractual responsibility to ensure a Ferrari champion. If this was Adrian Newey or Ron Dennis, the same thing would have happened. The cynicism in the comments here are unwarranted because F1 is, after all, a team sport.
IMHO, Rubens should have had the decency to move out of the way so that his fellow teammate could win a championship.
ABSOLUTELY NORMAL !!!!!! F1 IS A TEAM SPORT...... BARRICHELLO WASN'T GOOD ENOUGH (WELL HE HAS NEVER BEEN) SO YOU LET THE BEST OF ALL TIMES WIN..... NO PROBLEM WITH THAT.... YOU ALL ARE HYPOCRITES... !
A part of me always asked if Rubens had enough dignity to say no and win the race. But what can he do he is racing for ferrari can he say no? So I hate ferrari and michael schumacher, especially. For what they did for so many years. They have no class. I am a mclaren fan till the end. we've had our moments also but I can never like the ferrari red.
@l0dgey ..like when he slammered Prost out in Suzuka, isn't it?! LOL. Come on, guys. Every driver got a dark side. Senna wasn't perfect and I do believe he wasn't as quick as Michael. BTW, Barrichello was ALWAYS slower than MSC. Except a couple of times in 6 years. Who could really say Todt was wrong?
@AnfieldRed10 Alonso scored no points in Belgium this sunday. He's 41 points away from Hamilton. Therefore, Ferrari's dick move in Germany made no sense whatsoever.
@adakar83 FIRST WHAT DOES LOL MEAN to my knowlege it has several meanings ..second you must have a short memory webber and the spoiler. then webber was told vettel was faster that led to vetel coming off a few races ago .i dont agree with todays outcome but it was a ferrari one two.david coultard said if in any team say the is no team orders there liars.
@adakar83 i know but apparently they have been called up to the fia now for further investigation, maybe jean todtt has changed?...nah once a ferrari scum always a ferrari scum
@adakar83 insulting ferrari is useless; it's a few people's fault, the team is not responsable; so, please, insult todt, michael, ross brawn... and so on. not the Ferrari.
@Bresoto If Schumacher can drive faster, i'm sorry for Barrichello, but Schumacher have to pass him... Of course, if it's for the campionship, it's more important, so that's the only way to win many championships, the best driver should never be stopped from the worst... And, i'm still sorry for Barrichello, but that's F1, and not a kart race...
@Bresoto I know, however Barrichello was not so perfect and fast so much times like Schumacher... Barrichello sometimes was better than Schumacher when there wasn't car in front of him , but Schumacher was more aggressive to pass others rivals
ths guy is FIA PRESIDENT!!!!! wow... and what a shame... Schumarcher won by a huge gap that year! and they took this victory from Rubens "for the championship"... incredible!
Schumi the best in everything: - in the rain - in building a team - in driving an inferior car to victory - in driving skills - in physical fitness - in winning from sheer impossible situations - in overtaking - in being obsessed about winning - in work ethics - winner mentality Why don't all these stupid schumi haters watch only of the many races where Schumi overtook everybody starting from behind and a tire puncture making him lose 70 sec?? watch?v=0LnN80hTtNg&feature=related
@fateish69 Schumi the best in everything: - in the rain - in building a team - in driving an inferior car to victory - in driving skills - in physical fitness - in winning from sheer impossible situations - in overtaking - in being obsessed about winning - in work ethics - winner mentality Why don't all these stupid schumi haters watch only of the many races where Schumi overtook everybody starting from behind and a tire puncture making him lose 70 sec?? watch?v=0LnN80hTtNg&feature=related
well, at least he said please... c'mon... as a brazilian, that was overwhelming... i was like: yeah! finally! he will win! and so was the narrator... haha i remember he said "not today! not today! today, yes! today, yes?! it's unbelievable! if i had bet all my money, i'd have lost it all!" he got pissed... haha those were good days... even with shits like this happening, i miss those times.
this was 5th race and todt says let him for the champinoship! So the conclusion is SCHUMACHER IS A DICK HE WON ALL HES TITLES BECAUSE RUBENS poor rubens he could won those 7 titles if there was't stupid schumacher - worst F1 driver ever
and Renault is out .... almost . They stay right now for 2010 but I think that after 2010 , when the next car will be so crapy as this year ... they will leave as a team and only as engines supplyer

Title is bullshit, Coulthard was leading the race, Rubens was second and Schumacher was 3rd and should have been in the lead without Montoya.

I wouldn't expect less, very likely coming from Ferrari. No honor, no respect. Jean Todt should had been banned from F1, as was Briatore as result of the Singapure incident. FIA is one of the most corrupt organizations I've ever seen.

Schumacher is faster than you. Can you confirm you understood this message?
keeKKer 11 months ago
I'm not sure there's anything wrong with what Jean Todt did. The bottom line is that it's Jean Todt's contractual responsibility to ensure a Ferrari champion. If this was Adrian Newey or Ron Dennis, the same thing would have happened. The cynicism in the comments here are unwarranted because F1 is, after all, a team sport.
IMHO, Rubens should have had the decency to move out of the way so that his fellow teammate could win a championship.

A part of me always asked if Rubens had enough dignity to say no and win the race. But what can he do he is racing for ferrari can he say no? So I hate ferrari and michael schumacher, especially. For what they did for so many years. They have no class. I am a mclaren fan till the end. we've had our moments also but I can never like the ferrari red.

this is the only reason why shumacher was "the best" senna always had to beat his team mate fair and square.
l0dgey 1 year ago

@adakar83 FIRST WHAT DOES LOL MEAN to my knowlege it has several meanings ..second you must have a short memory webber and the spoiler. then webber was told vettel was faster that led to vetel coming off a few races ago .i dont agree with todays outcome but it was a ferrari one two.david coultard said if in any team say the is no team orders there liars.
bmwnasher 1 year ago
@adakar83 i know but apparently they have been called up to the fia now for further investigation, maybe jean todtt has changed?...nah once a ferrari scum always a ferrari scum
ShaunTheSheriff 1 year ago
@adakar83 insulting ferrari is useless; it's a few people's fault, the team is not responsable; so, please, insult todt, michael, ross brawn... and so on. not the Ferrari.

and people say.. "RUBENS NEVER did better than Schumacher??" fuck ferrari.. i hate you!
Bresoto 1 year ago
@Bresoto If Schumacher can drive faster, i'm sorry for Barrichello, but Schumacher have to pass him... Of course, if it's for the campionship, it's more important, so that's the only way to win many championships, the best driver should never be stopped from the worst... And, i'm still sorry for Barrichello, but that's F1, and not a kart race...
MrMdC94 1 year ago
@MrMdC94 yeah.. but much people say.. rubens NEVER did anything better than Schumacher.. it's a LIE!
Bresoto 1 year ago
@Bresoto I know, however Barrichello was not so perfect and fast so much times like Schumacher... Barrichello sometimes was better than Schumacher when there wasn't car in front of him , but Schumacher was more aggressive to pass others rivals
MrMdC94 1 year ago
@MrMdC94 Oh yeah, and if shumi was so fast why was barrichello in first place?
