Gorbachev was a good dude, he wanted to kept the USSR intact, and he had some intruiging and creative visions for the future. Sadly, the rest of Eastern Europe, after years of brutal commusism regieme, could not place enough trust in him, for these visions to become reality.

Yet, someone may take it as a propaganda, but trust me a mixed economy of central planning and controlled free market used in whole east block was devastating for the whole countries. Just like modern west European cauntries have strong economy and never faced the central planning economy problems. You will say that in communist times almost everyone got some job,but the problem was the real value of work that there were often doing. I'm Russian and lived in Yaroslavl for 10 years before I moved to US. Personally, as I see it, Russia is a lot better off today when in times of communism. It still has a long way to catch up behind US though, as corruption is present in almost every part of the government. Милиция (Militia) or Russian Police is almost always seen taking bribes and it's impossible to get through anywhere without connections. Russia has a lot of potential, none the less.

Unlike previous soviet leaders he recognized this and tried to do something about it, although he wasn't very successful in his actions. And Gorbachev politics wasn't good only for the USA and Western Europe, but for Eastern Europe and former Soviet Republics as well, they finally were able to break free from the soviet rule.

Gorbachev was a bad leader. He could have changed USSR in the Chinese way so it would be better at present. People would live better. The better socialist state model was created in China rather than in Russia. Dan Xiaoping did that. Gorbachev should have done something like that.
Neither Lenin nor Trotsky could create something good. I think the better way of creating a socialist country was showed by China. Dan Xiaoping did that. He said the socialist and market economy models can exist together so China is coming to its prosperity at the present moment.
Pay more attention to my words. I never said China is truely communist. But their system was very similar to the Soviets till Dan Xiaoping started his reforms. He created a mixture of the Soviet-like system and capitalism so China is coming to its prosperity. Gorbachev ruled when there was a crisis in USSR. He didn`t fix the problems and made them even worse so his policies totally failed and he lost as the last tsar Nickolas 2 did. Both of them are incompetent leaders who destroyed the country.
The idea is Gorbachev himself doesn`t and didn`t believe in communism. He used Lenin`s model - I mean the last works of Lenin and his last policies. Before his death in 1924, Lenin said people in Russia should build socialism rather than communism. And Lenin`s socialism contained the ideas of capitalism - remember Lenin`s new economical policy that was a partial return to capitalism. Lenin thought we could combine the private property and the socialist regulation of state economy.
I can`t call Gorbachev a bastard. He`s merely nothing. He`s a feeble man, an incompetent leader who couldn`t have fixed the crisis problems as the last tsar Nickolas 2 couldn`t have done it. Nickolas failed and the Empire fell. Gorbachev also failed so USSR also fell.
One has punished the nation for his brother and the great Russian empire has fallen, the other punished the country for his grandfather and the great USSR has fallen.
Gorbachev is merely a reflection of the degradation of that time communist party nomenclatura. The nomenclatura was degradating and was incompetent at ruling the country. So Gorbachev totally failed.
Whether my reasoning is post factum or not - that doesn`t matter because we should know all the mistakes of the past not to repeat them. We should know how to fight the consequences of the mistakes in order to fix the problems.
Poland and the countries of the Eastern Europe are wrong in hailing Gorbachev because living under control of USA in NATO at present is worse than under the Soviets. I think the Eastern Europe acted as traytors in some way but they can have some consequences of those actions.
The situation is different from that of 1918 Germany because Germans had the revolution from below but the Soviets hadn`t. Everything Gorbachev did was the revolution from above and he didn`t even tell not only his people but also top Soviet statesmen about such reforms. A lot of the statemen were against Gorbachev`s reforms - even prime - minister Rizhkov of USSR. A lot of common people were against his reform as well.
The statesmen also were against Gorbachev`s destructive external policy and his stupid belief in the Americans` and Europeans` words. The situation in Russia is very different from that in 1918 Germany so there`ll be no Hitler - like person in Russia. Russia also has other abilities of rebuilding its influence and it is doing that at present.
In 1990 Gorby was loved only by the westerners but the Soviets hated him for the poverty his reforms created so they couldn`t even watch TV when Gorbachev was on screen. The soviet people hadn`t the same expectations as the Germans in 1918 because Gorbachev made his policy and didn`t care what his people thought.

Gorbachev was a good dude, he wanted to kept the USSR intact, and he had some intruiging and creative visions for the future. Sadly, the rest of Eastern Europe, after years of brutal commusism regieme, could not place enough trust in him, for these visions to become reality.

Yet, someone may take it as a propaganda, but trust me a mixed economy of central planning and controlled free market used in whole east block was devastating for the whole countries. Cost of that is a modern poor economic standings in this region and the last of hope for many families to live in decent standards of life.

Just like modern west European cauntries have strong economy and never faced the central planning economy problems. You will say that in communist times almost everyone got some job,but the problem was the real value of work that there were often doing. For example think for a moment about steelworkers, they were doing work that bring definitely more expanses then income. Answer and i will continue.

Transformation of whole economy and the often inefficiently conducted privatizations (done with the too much benefits for west companies and organizations) continue to be much of ballast for Poland current standing.
Eco. str. is most of the west EU, proof? See purchasing power of €, you can buy 3x more things from their average salary than in Poland in PLN.

I'm Russian and lived in Yaroslavl for 10 years before I moved to US. Personally, as I see it, Russia is a lot better off today when in times of communism. It still has a long way to catch up behind US though, as corruption is present in almost every part of the government. Милиция (Militia) or Russian Police is almost always seen taking bribes and it's impossible to get through anywhere without connections. Russia has a lot of potential, none the less.

Unlike previous soviet leaders he recognized this and tried to do something about it, although he wasn't very successful in his actions. And Gorbachev politics wasn't good only for the USA and Western Europe, but for Eastern Europe and former Soviet Republics as well, they finally were able to break free from the soviet rule.
I'd call Gorbachev a hero for that!

Get real folks, it were in fact corrupt and reactionist members of the nomenclatura who really brought down the USSR. They are also responsible for the mess afterwards. Gorbachev just wanted to keep the USSR together in a modernised way. Most former republics of the USSR (not only Russia) would have been better of if Gorbachev had been allowed to finish his project of glasnost and perestroijka. Pay more attention to my words. I never said China is truely communist. But their system was very similar to the Soviets till Dan Xiaoping started his reforms. He created a mixture of the Soviet-like system and capitalism so China is coming to its prosperity. Gorbachev ruled when there was a crisis in USSR. He didn`t fix the problems and made them even worse so his policies totally failed and he lost as the last tsar Nickolas 2 did. Both of them are incompetent leaders who destroyed the country.

The idea is Gorbachev himself doesn`t and didn`t believe in communism. He used Lenin`s model - I mean the last works of Lenin and his last policies. Before his death in 1924, Lenin said people in Russia should build socialism rather than communism. And Lenin`s socialism contained the ideas of capitalism - remember Lenin`s new economical policy that was a partial return to capitalism. The situation is different from that of 1918 Germany because Germans had the revolution from below but the Soviets hadn`t. Everything Gorbachev did was the revolution from above and he didn`t even tell not only his people but also top Soviet statesmen about such reforms. A lot of the statemen were against Gorbachev`s reforms - even prime - minister Rizhkov of USSR. A lot of common people were against his reform as well.

The statesmen also were against Gorbachev`s destructive external policy and his stupid belief in the Americans` and Europeans` words. The situation in Russia is very different from that in 1918 Germany so there`ll be no Hitler - like person in Russia. Russia also has other abilities of rebuilding its influence and it is doing that at present.

In 1990 Gorby was loved only by the westerners but the Soviets hated him for the poverty his reforms created so they couldn`t even watch TV when Gorbachev was on screen. The soviet people hadn`t the same expectations as the Germans in 1918 because Gorbachev made his policy and didn`t care what his people thought.

You are right, Pala, but your reasoning is post factum. According to my parents and other witnesses, Gorby was loved in Romania, too. And in Poland, Hungary. Maybe it even don't matter if he was well intentioned or not. The result is a catastrophe.

And Gorbachev`s actions indeed were intentioned because he himself once said he destroyed the Soviet system by purpose. The result indeed isn`t good at all but it`s not the worst because everything can still be changed and it seems like Putin does something to fix Gorbachev`s mistakes.

You`re right. Gorbachev hasn`t done something good for Russia. He destroyed the country and made it weak both in political and in economical senses so the Russians hate him. How can they like a person who destroyed the stability thus leading to the personal tragedies and chaos. An the West likes Gorbachev only because he destroyed Russia. But no one in the West wants to have such a leader like Gorbachev in their country.

And the people thought of money because Gorbachev destroyed economical system of the country thus making people poor. It was Gorbachev who believed Bush+Clinton about NATO`s not expanding, and he didn`t sign an agreement what was stupid.

Backfire: in nov 11 1918 the Germans overthrow the emperor and called for peace. They expected to be greated by their brothers in Europe. Europe+USA imposed them the humiliating Versailles peace. A Hitler was inevitable. In 1990 Gorby was very loved by humanity. The soviet people had the same expectations as the Germans in 1918. They were fooled by the irresponsible American presidents Bush+Clinton (NATO will not expand, haha). Sooner or later that will backfire.

Russia has a lot of abilities of backfiring at present and they have nothing to do with a war. Russia is trying to take over with the help of oil and gas supplies and with the other measures.

People believed Yeltsin because he fought against the privileges of the communist party. Who knew he would want more privileges for himself after his becoming a president. People naively thought Yeltsin was for democracy but he destroyed democracy by firing the Russian Supreme Soviet in 1993.
