  • This guy needs some serious ear protection

  • @carpetime I usually hafta wear ear plugs and hearing protectors (muffs) when the mains are running; Just running the generator as I am in the video, ear plugs are enough.

Interestingly these turbo engines arent as loud as blower engines; oh, they'll still make you deaf, just not as quickly, lol.

  • Don like EMD and CAT , prefer MAN B&W, MAK, Wartsila

  • A tugboat is one or two locomotive engines with a small ship built around it (or them). All power. Check out the video for Tractor Tug Ted. It's a monster. Yes, many tugs use EMD power. The main difference is that the marine engine sumps are deeper than the railroad ones to allow for oil level changes caused by waves. They don't want them sucking air.

  • Glad you enjoyed the video. While EMD's primary market is indeed locomotives and has always been, theyre also very popular out here on the water; I would say they are still the dominant engines in the 2000-7200 hp class of boats, although Cat has taken alot of business away with their 3500 and 3600 series engines. We just repowered one of our boats, swapping out a pair of 16-645 E-2's for a pair of electronic 8-710 G7 Tier II engines. I'll be putting up a video for that very soon.

  • Great video, Didn't know EMD used some of their engines in tugboats. EMD usually makes engines for locomotives and stuff.

  • that engine favors one in a locomotive am i.right?

  • @eajosephedward All EMD's were developed for the rail industry and then adapted to other markets, i.e. marine, power generation, drill rigs etc. This engine is a 645 turbo; the railroads used them by the thousands in 12, 16 and some 20 cylinder configurations, but they are dying breed. Most railroads are running the 710's nowaday where they run EMD's

  • how big is the tugboat u sail on ? about 30metre ? Im currently sailing on PSV's so totally different game but an interesting video non the less, even if i couldnt her much of what you were saying

  • How are those EMD's cooled? Not sure if pumping in the outside water for coolant would be a good idea, so I'm thinking a closed system, fresh water cooled with a heat exchanger . Was I right?

  • Ho are those EMD's cooled? Not sure if pumping in the outside water for coolant would be a good idea, so I'm thinking a closed system, fresh water cooled with a heat exchanger . Was I right?

  • @DG19075 Yes, for this boat it uses a 'closed' system, or keel cooled as its more commonly known.

Im currently on a different boat than the one in the video; this boat is raw water cooled. Sea water is drawn into the engine room by a pump on each engine and is passed thru a water to water shell and tube type heat exchanger (sea water cools the engines fresh water, then the fresh water is passed thru an oil cooler before returning to the engine.)

  • why do you have a viet cong flag on the front of your shirt?

    college dropout?

  • @mistressinpcvsitonme Youre kidding me, right? Goggle 'flags of US states' during your break from working in the meth lab. (I'll give you a head start.......its the state flag of T-E-X-A-S) Thats the American flag on my shoulder btw if you werent sure.

Originally I was going to delete your comments, but Im gonna let 'em ride to let everybody else see what an ignoramous you are. ps, I dint go ta college, lol.

  • @mistressinpcvsitonme You should just be quiet from now on.

  • @mistressinpcvsitonme Who is the collage drop out when he dosnt even know his own states flags.

  • with that flag on your shirt, this better not be an american flagged vessel.

  • @mistressinpcvsitonme You have a choice of two flags; which one offends you, the state flag of Texas or the flag of the United States of America?

  • Terrible audio... couldn't understand most of what he was saying!

  • @varsdale Sorry re audio, the mic on my poor little camera is shot, any background noise just kills it.

The boat Im on now is going in for overhauls in a few months, Im hoping to get some vids of that and maybe I'll have a better camera by then. btw, "he" is me. ;.)

  • WOW, I had no idea at all that tugboats use diesel locomotive engines at all, But that just goes to show u that locomotive motor's like the EMD 645's are extremely reliable and usefull in all types of vehicle's. very interesting.

  • @Zillion43 Boats have used EMD engines since the US Navy in WWII.

  • EMD's have an unmistakeable sound, we've got them in locos over here- the 12-645's are rated at 2250 bhp, the newer locos have 12-710's rated at 3300 bhp..great vid!!

  • @francovance1 Glad you liked it. Theres nothing better sounding than a turbo EMD; The boat Im on now has 16-645's, but with blowers; just not the same sound. :(

  • @rad3766 Ahh come on, the sound of a blown EMD is nice, especially the 12 cylinder jobs with its hearty chug.

  • @rad3766 Either way, nothing beats the sound of a 2 cycle diesel =) big or small haha

  • I know what you mean. I was a mechanic on a number of drilling rigs here in the gulf. I like EMD's. One rig I worked on had one16 and two 12-645's and one 99 cat for generators.

  • Hey just picking about the condition of your eng/rm. It's a good feeling and something to be proud of when you get a job with another co. or get trans to another boat and turn the place around. I work on a OSV in the gulf and I want to do what your doing on the tugs. Get me a job and we'll make it shine.

  • @Wyf4748 My main priority is having a boat that is available 24/ 7; that means concentrating on maintenanace and repair. The company Ive worked for the last 20 years expects the engineer to carry out most maint and repairs within their ability, so we are not just filter changers and painters.

Id hate to call my office to tell them the boat broke down and put the tow on the hill cause I was busy painting; dont get me wrong, I love a clean and shiny eng room, (I was in the Navy) .

  • Clean your shit up. Nasty eng/rm. I hope your not the engineer. The alarm went off when you shut off the prelube, damm. Yep self shot video, you gota be the engineer that wouldn't make it here. Do yall know what paint is?

  • @wqz4427 Yes, its a dirty engine room, or was. The engineroom was repainted following engine overhauls and other engine room work. Im not wasting my time painting something thats getting ready to be torn apart.

Why shouldnt the LOP alarm go off when the prelube pump is stopped?

Where exactly is 'here' ? Anyway thanks for stopping by :.p

  • @wqz4427 ...and as an aside, this boat had a 99.75% availability record over a 10 year period and an exemplary safety record for the same time period.

  • Is this on the Texas coast?

  • @randommagnum Dont let the Texas flag on my shirt mislead you; this was at Staten Island, NY

  • @rad3766 As a Texan, it fooled me. ;) What's with that patch?

  • @randommagnum Im from Texas, well not originally, but as the sayin; goes, 'I wasnt born in Texas, but I got there as fast as I could.' so thats where the Texas patch comes in

  • @rad3766 You too are a non-native? Heh heh! Believe me, I'm in the same boat (no pun intended). The state I originally came from is two to the left, one up.

  • Interesting and nice video, but subtitles through annotations would perhaps be a good idea.

If any audio post-processing could clean things up a bit, it would be very nice.

Otherwise, apart from the little nags, nice video. :-)

  • Thanks for the critique Niels; I havent done a lot of videos, so I'm still in a learning curve.

One thing I have learned is my poor little camera cant deal w/ a lot of loud noise, lol.

    Thanks again, Bob
