  • I have seen one, and it WAS the size of a cat! Scared the shit out of me!

  • there r some i saw 1 when i was 7 i live in Washington DC close to NY

  • by the way wiseassgamer there is a big difference between a rat and a possum if you see a possum from the front the face and snout are much different and a possum could not be mistaken for a rat....

  • I don't know if you read the annitation, but when I saw the possum, it was just before 6:00 in the morning so it was still dark out, so I could see how they could be mistaken.

  • i used to live in yonkers years ago and i have seen rats that large along the saw mill river. not that often mind you but yes they are out there...

  • again not part of the genus rattus but probably mistaken for a rat and it does live in America (both Americas that is):

    Myocastor coypus

I think this is the classic "River Rat" people speak of. It is also adorable and bigger than a typical cat.

  • I cannot vouch for new york rats (I do not know what species live there) but here's one:

    Phloeomys cumingi

It's about the size of a house cat. Found in the Philippines, cute as (aren't all rodents) and I think it is in fact a rat.

  • I'd be less skeptical that they saw a giant rodent but more skeptical that is was in fact the a rat.. there are allot of related genus that are pretty huge. The Genus rattus though seems to be comprised of fairly small creatures (smaller than a cat anyway). having said that google "Giant rat found in 'lost volcano'" to see a true rat close to the size of a house cat.

  • I just took a look at that video, and might I say, what an adorable little creature, very docile, not like the rats here in America who do tend to show aggression.

  • I dont think Norway rats, which are the rat species in our area, can get that big. But the Nutria Rats down south can get that big, but they are not in our area.

Of course with climate change you never know...

Possums do look like rats. But rats are cuter.

  • I have seen a "giant rat". Here in Indianapolis they are commonly called river rats. There are a few stories I've heard about them that they have killed alley cats in either competition for food or because the alley cat's instincts fooled it into thinking the river rat was food. I saw one on the road (dead) near the Whiteriver a few years back. I couldn't tell what it was exactly but the 2 elongated front teeth makes me think it was a "giant rat". Maybe I'm wrong but there it is!
