My T61 has 3 ports which all get used and your T420 seems like it only has 2 ports? If so then I'm not sure the upgrade would be for me. Also that big space under the screen would bother me. Have you adapted to having that empty space there?
Thank you, i bought 14" sleeve so i don't know if the slice battery will fit on it when it attached to T420. What do you think, i don't want to remove and snap it all the time i'm using the T420 it might get loose. Thank a lot dude.
@Jinkyboy23 Err... It's not that bulky. Even after snapping it onto the ThinkPad. There's no problems with it at all. Just snap it on and the ThinkPad recognizes it instantly.
Is it worthy 1.300 Euro for a six cell battery, i5, 2.3 GHz processor, 4GB ram, 500GB SATA, 14" 1600x900. I want to buy it for business usage, bot travel and office with port replicator. Thank you for the help. Regards from Budapest
@luyaofa Thank you for the advise. I appreciate it. I will buy a port replicator, additional monitor, keyboard and mouse. I try to find some laptop below 2kg - I will travel with it a lot and same time use it in the office. I see that prices in Hungary are so high, that in a moment a thought that perhaps MacBook Pro is better solution. But still docking station...networking with the other people from the office (they use MS) is important.
@ademferyp Actually if you want a thin and light model you can always buy the T420s or the x series. the port replicator works the same with T420s too.

i bought my t420 but with 6 cells only on it. So planning to get 9cells or slice battery. With slice battery does it look big and won't fit on my 14" sleeve case. Thanks a lot. It took only 5-6 hours the 6 cells.
Is any one face problem with Webcam and integrated Microphone?? how activate Mobile Broadband and Is there have integrated WiMax. my Thinkpad is T420 4180AU1
@aaurnab No problems with the webcam and microphone. in fact the microphone is pretty awesome. you can adjust it to your needs, whether you're talking or a group of people are talking. I don't have wimax on mine.
@piratesmvp Not at all. My desktop was at 1680x1050 and my thinkpad T420 is at 1600x900 resolution so not much of a difference. And my T420's screen looks better than my T61's screen, brighter too.
Oh my last comment never posted. I just wanted to let you know I went with the laptop, and upgraded to 1600x900 resolution (hope that wasn't a mistake b/c i read some bad comments soon after), i5 2.3 ghz, and 12 cell battery. Total came out to $916. Only ordered cause of your positive and helpful responses. Hope I'll love this laptop and it won't disappoint me for the next 4-5 years!
@luyaofa I meant 9 cell battery haha. People said the 1600x900 wasn't good because simply it didn't look good on the lenovo screen (lenovo screens are something many complain about). I'm not too sure. Do you have any complaints about the screen?
@soccer8595 The complaints about the screen was when Thinkpad still have CCFL backlighting. Now that all thinkpads are LED lighting I don't hear anymore complaints. The complaints that most have about the T420 is the 16:9 screen ratio, which leaves a weird area below the screen. I think I mentioned it in my video. Personally, I think 1600x900 resolution looks great to me. It's easier to write papers too since you can dock 2 documents side by side.
@luyaofa Thanks for the advice man, it arrived nicely and I'm using it right now, everything seems nice except one thing. The fan is constantly running in the backround, it's not too loud but it's making a noise constantly the instant I turn it on. Is this normal? I expected this laptop to be as quiet as a mouse since it's supposed to be a bus. laptop. Second, when I put my nose close to the laptop, I always smell this burning like smell, which comes from the exhaust on the left. Is this normal?
@soccer8595 The fan? Mine only runs when I'm gaming and using the discreet graphics card. Yours don't have a discreet card right? You ought to adjust the setting in the Thinkpad power manager. just click on the battery bar. if that does not work then update the bios using the thinkpad utilities. No smell on mine either.
@luyaofa So you're saying that your laptop is super quiet? My fan is running constantly, and when I put my hand by the exhaust I can feel the heat and wind coming out. It's really annoying. Do you think this is supposed to happen or should I send it back?
@soccer8595 I don't hear anything from my thinkpad under normal use. I don't think it should make that much noise or produce that much heat. Maybe it's your processor. Mine's core i7, so I'm not sure about core i5. Why don't you call their tech support and ask them?
IM ABOUT TO BUY THIS COMPUTER BUT SINCE I NOW TOO HAVE REALIZED THAT THERE ARE BUMPS ON THE TOUCHPAD WHICH I CAN IMAGINE HOW WEIRD AND UNCOMFORTABLE IT MIGHT FEEL..ANYONE CAN TELL ME HOW UNCOMFORTABLE AND BUMPY THOSE BUMPS ARE? OR DO THEY FEEL SMOOTH ?
I hope you can respond to this ASAP. There is a nice sale going on thats going to end on the 28th. 2 of the 4 thinkpad laptops on sale caught my interest, thinkpad edge e420s vs thinkpad t420. Edge is $650 and t420 is $850. They differ on battery edge - Battery (LiPolymer 48.8Wh)
and t420 with 6 cell Li-Ion Battery - 55+. Also, e420 is (2.3GHz up to SC 2.9GHz) and t420 has 2.50GHz. Both are i5's and have intell hd 3000. Which should I pick!! I'm a student that likes movies.
@soccer8595 I don't know much about e420. if battery is your thing then the T420 is better since you got the option to get the slice battery. With the slice battery and running on integrated graphics my T420 clocks in at at least 24hrs.
@luyaofa Okay thanks for the quick reply you're amazing. So do you think 850$ with i5, intel hd 3000, 1366x768, 6 cell battery,320gb7200rpm, 4gb ram is a good buy for the t420? also, i know how you have a 9cell and a slice battery, but how long will a 6 cell battery last on basic functions (web browsing, ms word). Also, does the 6 cell battery stick out in the back, or is that only the 9 cell that does that. Thanks! I hope you can respond asap again, sale almost ends!!
@soccer8595 I think that's a good price. For 6 cells, i think it might last around 5-6hrs. 6 cell battery does not stick out, only the 9 cell does. try to look for additional coupon codes online in addition to the sale. lenovo always have coupon codes floating around online.
@luyaofa thanks again for the quick reply. okay last question, please respond in 2 days before this sale ends!!! how much does a thinkpad t420 with a 9 cell battery weigh?!! And how much battery life do you get just with the 9 cell without a slice?! Thanks!! I'll be checking my youtube every hour lol
@soccer8595 With the 9 cell battery it weigh about the same with an average 14 inch laptop. I got 12hrs with just the 9 cells. LOL! compared to my thinkpad when the slice battery is attached, I think 9 cell battery only is very light. I recommend going with the 9 cell as if you get the 6 cells, you're going to end up buying the 9 cell later anyways.

@luyaofa omg you responded within half an hour you're a god. Thanks againOkay this is what im going with: T420i with Intel Core i5-2410M Processor (2.30GHz, 3MB L3), 1600x900 and 9 cell all for $850. What do you think about that? I was playingg around with other configurations, and saw that for the T420 the standard Intel Core i5-2520M Processor (2.50GHz, 3MB L3) is $100 more! A little more Ghz is $100 more is that normal lol?! Also, is the upgrade for the 16x9 resolution worth it?I Love you btw
@soccer8595 I think the configuration is value for money. You might want to think about what exactly are your intentions for your thinkpad. if you're just going to do office stuff, it's good enough. but if you're going to game or edit videos, you might want to boost the processor and get the graphic card. We got no choice but to pay lenovo for the processor speed upgrades, unless of course you know how to change the processors and wants to void the warranty. the 1600x900 resolution is a must!
@luyaofa I'm a junior in highschool, and I'm going to need this laptop to last my college days too. All I'm really going to do on it is watch movies and listen to music. Even if i do decide to play some compute games, I dont think an extra $100 fror 20 GHz more is worth it. So I think the i5 with 2.3 GHZ is enough to do just that. What do you think about that?
@soccer8595 Sorry was at school. Yeah if you're sure that you don't want anything more out of your thinkpad then that configuration is cool. oh yeah you should get the integrated camera too. The web telephony software for thinkpad is pretty awesome.

thanks for the reply. i read elsewhere that some people complain about the T420 screen, saying its a little "griddy" or that they can see the pixels/lines in the screen. Have you ever noticed this and do you think the colors are accurate when watching movies/playing games?
nice review. i was wondering, have you tried running graphics intensive games like Starcraft 2? have you ever had freezing issues with the computer? also, have you ever tried connecting it to an external monitor? thanks!
@ZergHorde Thanks. No problems with starcraft 2. Just finished editing a 1080p movie with Adobe Premier Pro CS5 on it and was unplugged all the way. So even with battery power, it can handle graphic intensive tasks. Did not freeze on me once. I used the displayport to connect to a HDTV using the HDMI converter. no problems at all.
@redfox1160 Graphic card is pretty good. Been playing Duke Nukem Forever on it and it's very smooth. the black bar is not noticeable once the the screen is on.
@luyaofa iam getting one of these before i go to school in the fall and was wondering... does the 9 cell battery stick out in the back? or is it like the 6 cell
Wish I had the machinery/materials to reverse engineer the Design Chassis/FrameScreenWidth,cooling infrastructure+ agree w/extra width problem.T410 width is less in size. Ordered a T420 (41786VU) from new/egg, noticed the spacebar was loud, keys were quiet response tho. BT3.0 is glitchy ,i5 temp 93C/200F while rendering TechSmith Camtasia Studio, IntelTurboBoost displayed clk speed@3.00/3.10ghz, AIDA64 Extreme Engineering Tested* RMA'd for new replacement, I'm selling it Sealed when I get it
I also wanted to add, Its a decent machine overall, has great performance, but I wish Singapore would get it right. To me the Japanese/Germans/Swiss would do ThinkPads right ;-). Also, Lenovo advertised thinner, lighter, but in my perspective not much a big difference, from the other T series. As well, I bought it for doing a lot of work with openSUSE security project, TOMOYO, susestudio, and other types of projects. Kind of wish macbbook pro's were built this way though ;-) but better.
Can someone tell me how well the hinges hold up on these? Are they really as durable as they say? I've owned two laptops and my current HP hinges seem like they're always cracking..
Hello. I've got a question. What are you using the ThinkPad for? What operating system do you run on it? I haven't found a definitive answer to this online... can it run UNIX-based systems well? Thank you.
@tiglarii I chose the T420 because I need to use adobe premier pro on it. Also to play some games ;p. I'm using window 7 pro that came with it. I'm not sure about UNIX-based systems, but I saw on a forum that some people are using ubuntu. try the forums.
@tiglarii Hi, Im getting a T520 tomorrow and I'm going to install ubuntu on it as the only OS, so you can PM if you want to know how well supported the hardware are or whatnot :D
@tiglarii You can run Linux on it no problem. Ubuntu will have all of your devices working out of the box, although you will not be able to use the Optimus switching graphics with it (although there are hacks to get it working).
I bought this today. I got the regular HD instead of the HD+ display. Mostly using this to read powerpoints and notes. So I when with the HD since the text will be a little bit bigger. Think I made the right choice? Cant wait to get this bad boy!
@MrMrSuperCool The fan cycle is pretty quiet usually, until optimus kicks in then it get a little bit louder. I got the 1600 x 900 screen so it looks awesome, even outdoors.
@luyaofa The space at bottom of the screen that you were mentioning about. Why does it look like a 10 year old Laptop? I used to own T42p which is similar to T60 or T61. Is it similar to these Classic models or did they made small display and big frame? also is the top body the classical Thinkpad material (matt finish) or has it got that cheap plastic look?
@mdrashidut I'm not sure about whether it looks like those classic models but it looks quite good to me. Similar to my old T61 widescreen. The material is way better than my old T61, even the palm rests have partial soft touch finish. Altogether a very well built high quality laptop.
@rak0001 The total was $2300, including the dock, slice battery, and bluetooth mouse. LOL, was thinking of getting the SSD option but decided to go for the dock instead.
Perhaps you're in a different market than I am, but according to my t420 spec sheet, there is no HDMI port on the t420. What you may be referring to is the DisplayPort, which kind of looks like an HDMI port.
@vhaarr I was playing COD black ops and torchlight. Don't know if NVS 4200M kicked in, but they run pretty good. Actually, I've seen the intel GMA 3000 in the sandy bridge processors doing well for games so the NVS should be capable of gaming for quite a long time.
Puh that slice battery looks huge... I got a T420 myself, but with the 6 cell battery. So far, it's ok for me (around 6-7 hrs. during office use). Doesn't it get too heavy?

@Jinkyboy23 I don't have a sleeve so I can't comment. Maybe you ought to call support before buying one?

@Jinkyboy23 It will fit. The sleeve will probably fit perfectly. I only have the 9 cell battery (no slice) and there is too much room.

Also, is the upgrade for the 16x9 resolution worth it?I Love you btw
soccer8595 5 months ago

What do you think about that?
soccer8595 5 months ago
@soccer8595 Sorry was at school. Yeah if you're sure that you don't want anything more out of your thinkpad then that configuration is cool. oh yeah you should get the integrated camera too. The web telephony software for thinkpad is pretty awesome.

And that's one huge battery.

thanks for the reply. i read elsewhere that some people complain about the T420 screen, saying its a little "griddy" or that they can see the pixels/lines in the screen. Have you ever noticed this and do you think the colors are accurate when watching movies/playing games?
ZergHorde 6 months ago
@ZergHorde I don't see any pixels/lines on the screen. Not sure about the colors though, but it looks pretty normal to me.
luyaofa 6 months ago
nice review. i was wondering, have you tried running graphics intensive games like Starcraft 2? have you ever had freezing issues with the computer? also, have you ever tried connecting it to an external monitor? thanks!
ZergHorde 6 months ago
@ZergHorde Thanks. No problems with starcraft 2. Just finished editing a 1080p movie with Adobe Premier Pro CS5 on it and was unplugged all the way. So even with battery power, it can handle graphic intensive tasks. Did not freeze on me once. I used the displayport to connect to a HDTV using the HDMI converter. no problems at all.
luyaofa 6 months ago
How is the graphics card? What games can you run with it? Also, how noticeable is the black bar at the under of the screen?
redfox1160 6 months ago
@redfox1160 Graphic card is pretty good. Been playing Duke Nukem Forever on it and it's very smooth. the black bar is not noticeable once the the screen is on.

luyaofa 7 months ago
@luyaofa iam getting one of these before i go to school in the fall and was wondering... does the 9 cell battery stick out in the back? or is it like the 6 cell
slingshot489 7 months ago
@slingshot489 It sticks out just a little. like the 6 cell battery on the old T61.
luyaofa 7 months ago
@necrocoprophilia Yup. Upgraded to 8gb. It's way cheaper to do it yourself.

Kind of wish macbbook pro's were built this way though ;-) but better.
clintburford 8 months ago
What games are you playing on it and do they work well with the nvidia quadro?
stevensonb93 8 months ago
@stevensonb93 Currently I'm playing Dungeon Siege 3. Works amazing. Going to install Duke Nukem soon.

Can someone tell me how well the hinges hold up on these? Are they really as durable as they say? I've owned two laptops and my current HP hinges seem like they're always cracking..
TranceAddict2 8 months ago
@TranceAddict2 They are solid metal hinges. Looks and feel very solid. My old thinkpad t61 held up even after four years.

how well can this laptop handle photoshop?
sturzynski 8 months ago
@sturzynski Real easy. I'm using premier pro on it, so photoshop is nothing.

gtarules1 8 months ago
Hello. I've got a question. What are you using the ThinkPad for? What operating system do you run on it? I haven't found a definitive answer to this online... can it run UNIX-based systems well? Thank you.
tiglarii 9 months ago
@tiglarii I chose the T420 because I need to use adobe premier pro on it. Also to play some games ;p. I'm using window 7 pro that came with it. I'm not sure about UNIX-based systems, but I saw on a forum that some people are using ubuntu. try the forums.
luyaofa 8 months ago
@tiglarii Hi, Im getting a T520 tomorrow and I'm going to install ubuntu on it as the only OS, so you can PM if you want to know how well supported the hardware are or whatnot :D
actionpackedPIVII 8 months ago
@tiglarii You can run Linux on it no problem. Ubuntu will have all of your devices working out of the box, although you will not be able to use the Optimus switching graphics with it (although there are hacks to get it working).
redhook916 8 months ago
I bought this today. I got the regular HD instead of the HD+ display. Mostly using this to read powerpoints and notes. So I when with the HD since the text will be a little bit bigger. Think I made the right choice? Cant wait to get this bad boy!
MrMrSuperCool 9 months ago
@MrMrSuperCool Yeah sure. But dude, you can easily adjust the text size even if you got the 1600 x 900 resolution.
luyaofa 8 months ago
Hi man, thanks for doing this vid. Few questions, does the fan cycle on and off is it loud. And how is the screen for viewing text
MrMrSuperCool 9 months ago
@MrMrSuperCool The fan cycle is pretty quiet usually, until optimus kicks in then it get a little bit louder. I got the 1600 x 900 screen so it looks awesome, even outdoors.
luyaofa 9 months ago
@luyaofa The space at bottom of the screen that you were mentioning about. Why does it look like a 10 year old Laptop? I used to own T42p which is similar to T60 or T61. Is it similar to these Classic models or did they made small display and big frame? also is the top body the classical Thinkpad material (matt finish) or has it got that cheap plastic look?
mdrashidut 5 months ago
@mdrashidut I'm not sure about whether it looks like those classic models but it looks quite good to me. Similar to my old T61 widescreen. The material is way better than my old T61, even the palm rests have partial soft touch finish. Altogether a very well built high quality laptop.
luyaofa 5 months ago
@HomeLessGuyToDieFOr the only problem so far for me is the placement of the dvd eject button; everytime i pick up my comp, the dvd tray pops out.
luyaofa 9 months ago
i have the t520 , loving it so far. I don't think I will buy other brand anymore. gonna stick thinkpad in future all the way. it builds like a tank

rak0001 10 months ago
@rak0001 The total was $2300, including the dock, slice battery, and bluetooth mouse. LOL, was thinking of getting the SSD option but decided to go for the dock instead.
luyaofa 10 months ago
My bad, it's not HDMI, it's displayport. Oops!

Perhaps you're in a different market than I am, but according to my t420 spec sheet, there is no HDMI port on the t420. What you may be referring to is the DisplayPort, which kind of looks like an HDMI port.

@luyaofa You said you had been gaming on it but what games? :) I am tempted to get this laptop but unsure what games the NVS 4200M can handle?
vhaarr 10 months ago
@vhaarr I was playing COD black ops and torchlight. Don't know if NVS 4200M kicked in, but they run pretty good. Actually, I've seen the intel GMA 3000 in the sandy bridge processors doing well for games so the NVS should be capable of gaming for quite a long time.
luyaofa 10 months ago
Puh that slice battery looks huge... I got a T420 myself, but with the 6 cell battery. So far, it's ok for me (around 6-7 hrs. during office use). Doesn't it get too heavy?
SFseis 10 months ago
@SFseis It's quite okay, because it's all plastic. At least there is an option if you need more battery life. LOL!
luyaofa 10 months ago
@SFseis What are your specs? Im planning of getting one, but dont know which specs for optimal battery life
