Cool pedal, but I don't think he really did anything that represents what a tape echo is used for. Where's that David Gilmour style soloing, or the actual Radiohead style playing?
Also, he talked for almost half of the video. Always a pet peeve.
This is very nice, but I think one would be better off spending a little bit more and getting a POD HD or DL-4, both of which have excellent recreations of of not only the Space Echo but other classic reverbs and delays which can be combined!
@johnpatrickrunnels IMO digital delay doesn't have a warm repeat like an analog delay. If you already have a reverb then go for an analog delay like the MXR carbon copy or the Malekko Lofi Ekko. Both really great analog delay.(both are same price) but if you are looking for a different kind of delay sound like the DD-20 have then go for that since you can save them in the memory slot. Plus it never hurt to have more than one delay pedal. I already got one and looking for another. Hope this help

@Sean2592 Hey Sean! The RE20 would be quite suitable for playing EVH stuff because Eddie used an Echoplex in the early days -- that's tape echo, precisely what the Boss attempts to replicate. With tape echo (or in this case digital modelling of tape echo) you get a much warmer, much more musical effect.

This pedal is cool and all, but it's honestly nothing you can't do with the DD7 for 50 bucks less. That tempo control is basically tap tempo and variable control that can be done with the knob on the DD7 easily. It's cool, but I think if you want the re 201 sound, you might be better off just getting an re 201, re 150 or re 101
@tippeltje118 This is a pretty good question but no, it's actually not. All Boss brand pedals have a buffered bypass. There are some benefits and weakness to this. They can decrease your signal clarity if they're bad buffers (Boss aren't), they can be noisy if they're old or bad quality and sometimes, they can be hard to tell if they're on or off. On the other hand, they're silent, they're nice and soft push buttons and the Boss ones are generally excellent quality.
No way. There is a huge difference between the echo and the delay in terms of their sounds. I own this and a DD-20 and this pedal is by far superior. Honestly, this is the best pedal I've ever owned and I've owned a lot of them.

A delay is a blend of the original signal and a signal that has an applied filter, decay and... well, delay, as is echo. Good review, but one BIG mistake - the pedal is DIGITAL, not ANALOG as he said... RE-20 is built using COSM technology, which stands for Composite Object Sound Modeling, which can't be analog in any way...
had this pedal about 2 years, it is awesome, hardly ever solo without it, if you own this pedal do yourself a favor and get the roland ev-5 expression or whatever it is that is compatible with this thing. you can use it to control repeat rate or intensity or echo volume or the thing he did when he held down the tap tempo side, it can get kind of crazy, and loud, this thing will blow speakers

@Ely4744 The demonstrator talks at the beginning of the video to explain what the pedal does. A great feature on YouTube is the ability to skip ahead in a video, so if you don't want to watch something, you don't have to in order to watch the later part of that video; you can click on the timeline of the video player to relocate your position to a point at which you are satisfied. Hopefully this helpful tip will save you a lot of frustration! Take care! :)
Why did he say this pedal is analog? It's digital, and it SOUNDS digital. The repeats are harsh, even in tape mode. Turning the tone down still doesn't help. If you're looking for analog or tape delay tone, you'll be disappointed in this. I had one for a day and took it back to the store after trying it with every guitar and amp combo I had.
@rickwicz I believe he means analog in circuitry, as in the signal being processed through analog means as opposed to being run through a digital modulation buffer. I'm not defending his statement, only elaborating on my interpretation of what he meant. I'm sorry his information lead you to make a decision you would later regret. Hopefully you found a different pedal -- with circuity less updated, timely or technological -- to suit your style. Take care!

You have at least some interest in skateboarding and you listen to some bands that I've been very much into (more than you ever will or have the opportunity to) but don't tell me you are deep into Rock N' Roll or anything I just mentioned. If you were you wouldn't be going off about the 'Roland Space Echo' being an "experimental" pedal and taking exception to "blues riffs" being played through one. What is Rockabilly?

Good review, but one BIG mistake - the pedal is DIGITAL, not ANALOG as he said... RE-20 is built using COSM technology, which stands for Composite Object Sound Modeling, which can't be analog in any way...

had this pedal about 2 years, it is awesome, hardly ever solo without it, if you own this pedal do yourself a favor and get the roland ev-5 expression or whatever it is that is compatible with this thing. you can use it to control repeat rate or intensity or echo volume or the thing he did when he held down the tap tempo side, it can get kind of crazy, and loud, this thing will blow speakers

what i dont understand is why everyone always feels the need to be so cruel. this man is giving you a quick demonstration of how the pedal works. all of you people who are complaining about how he should play, if you really want to find out what you can do with this pedal, TRY IT. hes playing great and giving you a quick overview, not going over every detail.

I am not trying to be offensive, but your comment is extremely surprising... running guitar through an effects pedal is a method of expanding the sound of a musical creation, and if that is pointless, then you might not understand the purpose of music as a language. For myself, and most guitarists, music is a way to translate thought or event to sound, and this is a resource for doing so.

@rootvalue Guitars sound shit, using an effect like this only further extrapolates its bad qualities. Effects like this really are useless for guitars and have much better use when used in conjunction with say a keyboard, a synth, or an electric violin.

@Ely4744 The demonstrator talks at the beginning of the video to explain what the pedal does. A great feature on YouTube is the ability to skip ahead in a video, so if you don't want to watch something, you don't have to in order to watch the later part of that video; you can click on the timeline of the video player to relocate your position to a point at which you are satisfied. Hopefully this helpful tip will save you a lot of frustration! Take care! :)

Why did he say this pedal is analog? It's digital, and it SOUNDS digital. The repeats are harsh, even in tape mode. Turning the tone down still doesn't help. If you're looking for analog or tape delay tone, you'll be disappointed in this. I had one for a day and took it back to the store after trying it with every guitar and amp combo I had.

@rickwicz I believe he means analog in circuitry, as in the signal being processed through analog means as opposed to being run through a digital modulation buffer. I'm not defending his statement, only elaborating on my interpretation of what he meant. I'm sorry his information lead you to make a decision you would later regret. Hopefully you found a different pedal -- with circuity less updated, timely or technological -- to suit your style. Take care!
